The late 50's, the last of the greatest days for America. Contrast this with just 10 years later.

Great footage! Didn't know the Maple Leaf carried CN cars. From the consist it appears ridership was still decent then.

I just loved this film. I never got to ride the LV and loved to have a meal in a Lehigh Valley diner.

An excellent film. Great scenes of engine changes, semaphores, and no graffiti on the freight cars!

To this day the Lackawana terminus at Hoboken is my favorite train station in the country.

I run trains on this trackage in 2024, it is awesome to see how things were 70 years ago, we could sure use those passenger trains again!

Wow, great video! Especially enjoyed the locomotive change with GGI-4887 and the Lehigh Valley Alco PA at NK tower. Few remember, but under agreement with the Pennsy, Lehigh Valley mainline trains eastern terminus was the great Pennsylvania Station, New York until 1962. My cousin who passed away last year would of liked to see this, as apparently there was a barber he used to patronize not far from NK tower, from which one could see engine change. This was well before I-78 was built. The views of the Lehigh Valley mainline were great, around Manville and Flemington Jct., and I still thought it was all double tracked, but I sadly found out on a visit to Raritan, NJ, that it becomes a single-track west of highway 206. Thanks for this historic video!

This was the views that made me love railroading both actual and model. Love those 40" Tuscan box cars, Alcos and GG1's.

SENSATIONAL! I was just a little young to ride the LV.

I knew that Lehigh Valley trains operated from Pennsylvania Station New York, but I never thought about what would power them. Pennsy GG1s swapped with diesels at Newark! Cool semaphore signals as well.

So cool to see the manville sign and its water tower. I was just 2 years old then and lived a few miles away in millstone. In 1965 id watch the LehighValley trains go by from from my 5th grade class room at Flagtown.

Last train the Maple Leaf with 250,000 riders. Could not take the loss of mail and package express income ! In 1967 loss of this business nationwide would bankrupt the whole industry. Oct 1967. Under funded Amtrak four years later would be the result. Gas was maybe 25 cents a gallon. Public interest demands return of these Valley trains.

The GG-1 was only 20 years old in 1958, and PCB's weren't a known carcinogen yet.
