Here's some perspective: STR owners don't make campaign donations to politicians but hotels do...

Funded by hotel corporations that charge $600 per night. It will do NOTHING to lower property values in the state of Hawaii. Increase hotel corporation profits.

As long as the home is owned by a single family and not commercial companies, no profits should go off island.
@ascendingstarseed4 ай бұрын
I wholly agree with that exception, if you don't live on the island or are a corporation making profits from STR's you need to be phased out so local residents have homes. I'm a lava refugee on the big island from the 2018 eruptions. Over 2000 living spaces were taken by lava leaving many of us without safe, affordable housing. Literally overnight the rentals doubled in price and within a few years they've tripled, or more. Finding safe, affordable, pet friendly housing has become a literal nightmare and the lack thereof has forced many off the island, or into homelessness. The only reason I've been able to stay is by lowering my standard of living to extremely poor standards to keep a dry roof over my head and have a home for my pets. So I support this legislation, but there do need to be exceptions for local hawaiians and long term residents/seniors who own STR's as a way to earn income.

Hawaii is an awful place to have a vacation rental. Even if you are legal the locals hate you and the county will do every in their power to shut you down. Islands are total ran by hotel industry.

Always the incompetence of politicians in Hawaii puts the blame on others.

I respect local STR owners, the ones who live onsite or in the same community and they should be able to keep on renting out (to anybody) legally with minimal burdens. And full-time STRs in low density are great for local economies. That's where I prefer to stay on other islands. But there's no getting around the problems in those high density areas like Kona or Kailua or West Maui, where STRs are so concentrated it changed the character. 20 percent? 25? Even if that's on the high side, it's staggering, and you SEE it when you stay there. No, STRs should not be eliminated. That will erase too many local jobs and incomes. But there should be limits, and we still need to build more affordable, family-style housing. More than can probably be obtained using zoning powers to bully owners to become LTRs. I doubt I could afford to rent some California absentee's million dollar gated glass bungalow thirty miles from town, and they'd probably just sell if STR went away, keeping it out of the rental market yet again. I hate to say it, but this bill probably would not change much on its own, without more housing efforts.

This is so biased. What about the resorts and hotels? They are short term rentals and could easily be turned into apartments for the housing problem not to mention most are foreign investors.

This is literally to make hotels wealthier by making them the only option in the state for visitors tourists are always going to come thinking that people that own vacation homes on the island are going to all of a sudden rent to locals at a huge discount is delusional this simply creates scarcity of accommodations and pushes all tourism into the hotels making hotels wealthier and not creating any affordable housing most those in opposition are arguing from an emotional position rather than a logical one people that own multimillion dollar vacation homes are not going to all of a sudden rent to locals at a huge discount simply because they can’t Airbnb their places anymore they will just sit empty until those owners visit no one has made a clear argument as to how this fixes anything all it does is destroy a huge component of the local economy while making the hotel chains wealthier and more powerful this is so deeply flawed and if y’all can’t see this is simply hotel chains lobbying to create a monopoly then you deserve the negative impact it will have on locals watching native Hawaiians shot themselves in the foot while blindly supporting hotel chains is just sad this in no way will create affordable housing it will however make hotels the only game in town and make them extremely wealthy and will make more giant hotels viable to build to keep up with the new demand meaning more detrimental impact to nature as these huge resorts scar the land and don’t give back at all to locals

Bad idea. Do this and you will see hotel/motel rates skyrocketing and you will lose a portion of your tourism. I have visited Big Island 4 times and stayed at short term rentals. It felt welcoming as hosts provided a local perspective that big hotels overlook. We got to see many locals only hidden wonders. Keeping it allows native families to be able to afford and maintain their generational family homes.

Need to press this issue further. All these short term rentals need to see how many have primary residence loans. All that are under primary lending within two years need to be taken out of realtor controlled rentals. It’s white collar fraud and licenses need to be threatened to draw out all the predators.

Oof. I’m unsure why they only give each individual a minute to speak, it’s not like we’re speed dating here. I feel bad for the last women speaking, the members could’ve honored her last parting words Then be done. Unsure how Many members were in attendance and spoke, but if there weren’t many then have them speak more. Then also prioritize Indigenous Hawaiians more sway for wishes They need and want. Pains me to see Many individuals suffering. Anyways, hopefully there will be a positive conclusion to this. Thanks for reading.

gov't turned people against each other for government failure. Housing shortage didn't just pop up when Lahaina was lit of fire - it's been a problem for a long time but now the govt has someone to blame besides themselves (like they ever take the responsibility). clown Green had to emphasize the blame game by calling it BULLSHIT. Yeah I call bullshit too - on the government!!!

Str ban will not lower the cost of houses or condos. People from all over the world buy condos in Hawaii. Takes lots of $$$$ to buy there and people will keep their condos just rent to friends unofficially

Ah, the People's Republic of Hawaii... Your property is yours to use as you choose... So long as you choose what the state decides. You still get to pay property taxes on the property you own, but "Big Bruddah" gets to determine your lawful use of it. ='[.]'=

@@seasaltloverbut how tf does destroying the Airbnb market create affordable housing I’d love to hear the logic here because all I can see is this robs Peter to pay Paul airbnbs won’t exist and hotels will continue to exist pushing all those tourists into hotels won’t make housing affordable it just makes the hotels wealthier it doesn’t build any new units but it makes an excuse for more hotels to be built lol locals are being fucking duped by hotel chains that are lobbying these politicians to create a monopoly for them people that own these vacation homes won’t just turn around and start renting long term at a huge discount to locals those houses will simply sit empty and only be used by the owner when they vacation there this is truly wild the hotels are preying on the fragile emotions of native Hawaiians and getting Hawaiians to do their dirty work then the hotel chains will leave them high and dry and the locals still won’t have housing this is going to be the nail in the coffin for Hawaiians and push many out of the state forever

Hawaii County will get sued for violating "Takings" provision of property use laws if they try to take away property rights of landowners. Check with corporate Council and ask them what the worst case outcome will be if they proceed with "Takings".
