Brilliant! Major problem in my shop solved. I'm on my way to take apart my toilet! Thanks for the tip, Charlie......

Glad you liked it, Mark. With all the woods around your house a toilet is just redundant anyway.

So you don’t need to spend big dollars on a Festool vac clamping system! Great practical use of available bits to get a a very satisfactory vac clamping result! that is custom built. Thanks fir sharing - subscribed!

Great idea, I think maybe o ring material might also work well for this I will have to give it a try thanks for the inspiration.

Absolutely, an O-ring would work, especially on a flat surface

Wow this is awesome. I am a woodworker welder fabricator knife maker jack of all trades. But I was searching to see if anyone had made a DIY vacuum jig for drilling bowling balls. I am wanting to drill my own balls and I seen a very expensive one you can buy. But this I think would work fine. I think I would cut a wood ring to go around it with the gasket only 1/2 to 1/4 inch proud just to see if it would make it more ridged. But wow What a Idea I could see lots of uses for this. I think I will order me a seal today.

Awesome idea! When I saw this video linked in my email I thought it would be for a project using a vacuum pump to actuate regular clamps. Any idea about how well a vacuum check valve would do to maintain the necessary suction if you were to use a hand pump set up? (hint hint) I imagine multiples of this device could be used in a jig made for an engine stand for holding vehicle body parts.

Hi Flo, I was thinking the same thing. I tried installing a ball valve in the hose between the clamp and the pump, but it didn't work. I suspect that the vacuum leaks right through the wood. Regardless of a hand pump or motorized, it would hold longer if I had some kind of tank between the valve and the clamp. Here is an example of what I mean. They are using some PVC pipe as vacuum tanks: www.joewoodworker.com/docs/ProjectEVS.pdf

I would suggest getting an oilless vacuum pump. Yours shoots a mist of oil into the air, as you've probably already noticed.

Yes. I've actually upgraded my vacuum pump since I released this video.

Eeeeeepoxy. Just teasing, i find it interesting some people say it that way. Thanks for showing that this is pretty easily feasible. I'm going to do it but I think I may try silicone instead of epoxy to adhere and seal the gasket to the wood. I would think the flexibility may just help ensure it doesn't come loose or leak down there as I'm moving things around.

Thanks, If the silicone will stick then yes!

You can eliminate movement by using a dowel vertically inserted in the wooden base and wedge between the part and dowel.
