The point of vaccum sealing anything is to remove the air.it doesn't need to look like coffee container to be a vacuum

Yes, Part of your issue, is you are somewhat inexperienced with the food saver. After a lot of trial and error, of trying to seal meat with bones, I found you have to prewrap with an unsealed bag, to protect from piercing. As for ammo, I found it more trouble than it’s worth. I have stores, 20yo, with just an ammo can and desiccant, and they are perfect.

agree, but I am planning to revisit this very soon! If you stop and think, its just the moisture and heat that hurt ammo. Air isn't a big enemy.

Long term rifle storage you may ask ? Use what ever gun lubricant you use. Put the gun in a gun sock. Softens the rough and sharp edges. Roll out enough vacuum sealer bag, 11" wide, place your rifle in the bag and seal it. I tested it in 2012 with a M9130, Russian, and it stayed as fresh and no corroded as the day I did the above process after three years. In 2015 I did the same with a Saige 308-1. Lots of sharp and pointy edges. In 2019 I sold it. Looked brand new. Side note. I have a gun room with a dehumidifier. The point is the seal never broke as long as you endure the sharp edges are covered.

I took a hiatus from foodsaver ammo packaging. It got too frustrating with so many trial and error attempts lol. I just have to accept loose ammo foodsaver packing will pierce right through the bag. The safest way is getting creative to foodsaver pack boxed ammo. Great post!

The best thing to do is to use an ammo can that reliably seals up airtight, and the plastic ones you're using have been well proven to not do so. They're simply too flexible and the seals have very little surface area. If you lift them up when they're full of ammo the lid bows slightly and breaks any seal you may have. I've seen this happen myself on the same exact cans. If you use metal military style ammo cans with good, pliable seals and a desiccant pack in them there's no need for the additional oxygen barrier of a Foodsaver bag. Your ammo will keep for many years that way, whether loose or in their original boxes.

Oh my goodness! What Impeccable timing you have! I as well did a experiment just this morning! I was able to pick up some 30.06 rds .. but the boxes are just to large and wouldn't fit just right in the 50cal can.. so I unboxed and sealed 50 rds at a time placed it in the ammo can and they fit perfect! I placed the rounds all one direction placed the ammo cardboard box end in each bag! I will definitely use your 3rd option for the .380 rds I was able to get! Great video! 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸

I did the same thing had the same results. I also did my 12 gauge and 410 shotgun shells which worked a lot better you lamb and single file you know although it just one layer and it seemed to work pretty good.also I did 9 mm and 380 which also did very well 22 did well as as the same it's just the bullets that are sharp that tend to poke holes in it. But even saying that I think it still protects them quite well as far as the elements air moisture I put mine in a tote after I sealed them with the food saver so my opinion is ...vacuum sealing your ammo is better than NOT vacuum sealing your ammo

I think the concept is a very solid idea. I live on the river and we had a flood. I thought the plastic and metal ammo cans would protect the ammo from flooding. Obviously a bad assessment. The metal ammo cans did a lot better though a flood... just a little moisture seeped through. The plastic containers performed the worst and yielded very little protection from submersion. Granted, I live in a unique area but I thought I would share the lesson learned. Thanks for the video!

I suspect that the lid on the plastic ammo cans will bow slightly in the middle over time and lose their seal. Metal cans are the way to go for long term storage.

ABSOLUTELY try the Vevor brand “Chamber” style, vacuum sealer. Not as inexpensive as the food saver , but much much better! It uses any type of poly bag up to 10 mil thickness . It doesn’t require the special (and $$) food saver bags . I always add small packs of desiccant to every sealed bag (before sealing..). I place everything inside ammo cans when done . I don’t even use our food saver for food anymore . The Vevor sealer is incredibly well built for something made in China but it does weigh 75 pounds approximately. The total cost of the machine including delivery was under $400 bucks.. I’ve saved so much money in food saver, specialty bags that it paid for the chamber sealer .

I have a chamber vacuum sealer similar to the vivor model, works great. I've found that the heavy brown plastic MRE bags work great for making ammo "battle packs " , just increase the seal time a bit and they are really tough.

I would say if you ever had to doll out ammo it would be good to have it sealed, though breaking it down into "serving sizes " might be better. If it has to go in a pack, it would keep it safe from the elements until it needed to be opened for use. I like the idea. Thats good stuff, just do like 1 or two boxes per seal though, and yes keep them in their boxes. The ammo can will do the work of long term storage and the bags will work for hunting, bad weather camping, or bug out. Though bugging in is probably a better choice if not in a city.

Put 100 rounds at a time in paper lunch sacks. Fold it over, cut of the excess on the open flap and cut a couple notches in the rear to help with air extraction. The paper will prevent any breeches in your vacuum bags and you should get a rock-hard little brick of ammo that will outlast you. Also, put 2 seals on each end of the bag for good luck.

I don't think you need to have the bags vacuumed per se it helps take out the extra it helps take out the extra Volume if you back in it vacuum it a little bit but I think you just primarily want an airtight seal and try to minimize the volume. I have a vacuum sealer and I can push a button to make it move on to the ceiling step after the vacuum is just running for about 10 seconds.

Trying is not a bad thing . You did very good and you had all the errors I had . So when using loose bulk ammo I line the ammo box with food saver bag then line bag on the sides and bottom with cardboard then vacuum pack it so it don't puncher the bag . I also do the same thing for ammo in box just minuse the cardboard cause it's already in a box . Other ammo like 22lr / 45acp / 9mm you can just fill it like you're first attempt and it should be fine cause there not a sharp point . Edit when I get more ammo I will revise this .

From what I can tell, you need to seal fewer rounds per bag. I have some 50 & 100 round bags sealed up just fine, but some larger quantities really started to cause issues. Just do the bags in small quantities & stack them up in the can instead of trying to use one bag for the entire can. The 50 round bags sealed especially tight & the bullets are laying perfectly flat. It uses more bags, but if you want to seal your ammo this way, then 50-100 rounds per bag is the best way I have found. 5.7x28 rounds also like to puncture bags, but more traditional handgun calibers like 9mm, 10mm, .380 ACP & the like are a lot easier because they don't puncture the bags like the Spitzer style rounds do.

Friend. Thank you for the vid. The solution for the problem is to put the 556 back into their boxes and vacuum seal them. Or lay the loose ammo flat and vacuum seal. Afterword, put cotton balls in between each "sheet" of ammo to avoid puncture through roughly handling the can. Take care. God bless.

Works better in smaller amounts . Also leave the absorbers out, 556 and other rifle rounds are better in the box and then sealed. I have had ammo vac sealed for several years still very tight, but my experiments with large quantities of loose rounds have been like your.

It doesn't matter what it looks like. Just make sure all the air is out of the bag. You need to take the bag out of the box and lay it flat on the table the vacuum seal it. I only seal 5.56 for enough for 1 magazine 30 rounds. Its convenient and easy to count. Then when you open a bag you have enough for shooting. There is no reason to seal 400 rounds. When you open a bag you probably aren't going to shoot 400 rounds unless SHTF. 9mm I do bags of 50. .22 I do 100 rounds Its a lot of bags but its better than having your ammunition get corrosive.

loose bullets whether 223/556 or even 45-70 needs to be double bagged to hold seal. not sure of why but that's what it took foe mine to seal air tight. What I found easier to work was to put 223/556 rounds into stripper clips and then use boxes and seal them up it keeps the rounds from punching holes in the bags. I think I will post vid showing process with 45colts

:) there is air in each cartridge, you suck the air from around the cartridges but not directly from the cartridges. The pressure comes out slowly from the individual cartridges, so you did not manage to completely suck the air. I accidentally left a 9mm round in my pants pocket, washed/dried, took it to the range and it fired. Got lucky? Maybe. I think what you're doing is perfectly fine. The only concern I'd have as far as long term storage is the plastic degrading and getting stuck to the rounds.

Have 7.62 x39 mm that was produced in 1971 brass case just in cardboard 30rd boxes on stripper clips that fire with no issue I was born.in 1971 so ammo doesn't go bad as long it is kept in cool dry place

With the availability of quality mil surp boxes, I find it silly that anyone would consider using a cheesy plastic box. I keep it stupid simple. At age 64, .50 cal cans are too heavy to transport so I use .30s now. Before sealing my boxes, I heat them and their contents to around 160 degrees. Sealing the warm box creates a light vacuum when they cool. No dessicants, no baggies, no cheap ass plastic.

The problem is you're just pouring the ammo in the bag. Yeah, that isnt doing anything for you. For that, just throw it in the can with a moisture absorber, put a tag on it with the date, and recharge the desiccant annually. I've been storing ammo like that for decades. I was shooting .22 from 2005 over the weekend and it was fine. If you're going to seal ammo, smaller quantities. Possibly "battle packs" in multiples of of a certain mag capacity. And have it on a flat try while sealed. But other than that, just use ammo cans and desiccant if you want a basic store. If you want to get really in a long "long term reserve", PVC, put in more desiccant than you need, make sure both ends are glued, and brush on a couple coats of paint to really get an nooks and crannies. Paint on the contents and which end is up so when you saw it open you don't hit any rounds. In that case, it might make some sense to do a loose vacume pack, with desiccant in each internal pack (use your pipe as the mold) and an oxygen absorber on the outside. As to how your store those... up to you.

Wow, I don’t like to say anything negative. I would recommend that you only publish your success, and perhaps only mention your fails. This was not a helpful video. Perhaps if you script them in the future, and not shoot from the hip, you would appear to have much more on the ball. Your task was not difficult, and there were so many solutions to your task with the tools available. I guess the reason I commented was due to my overt frustration with the little effort invested before the hands went up in defeat. Three cheers for 50 below!
