@mikenkaleigh11 сағат бұрын
I think hornady is making really good decisions. Being in an ar15 is the first good one. Keeping a reasonable twist rate so you can use normal bullets is number 2. Sorry but 8.6 is too expensive, and you are forced to use monolithic, the most expensive type of bullets. If you want supersonic in ar10, there are much better options than 8.6, and for subs 8.6 case is too big and you just dont need an ar10 for subs. Hornady is bringing it to the masses at reasonable prices.
@omairchughtai367512 сағат бұрын
The 8.6 Blk can use cup and core bullets for subsonic just fine. At around 1100 fps in a 1:3 twist the RPM is 264,000, which is fine for most cup and core bullets. The reason Hornady doesn't want to get involved in 8.6 BLK is that if you ran that bullet through a 1:3 twist at say 1400 fps, now you're at 340,000 RPM, which is not 100% safe. You have very little operating margin. So for a company like hornady to mass produce this cartridge for subsonic use in a 1:3 twist, they have to now make barrel length specific cartridges, put warnings everywhere saying absolutely do not use this cartridge in a certain barrel length...etc. Its a massive liability. They could of course just run monolithic like everyone else but that's not the point, wildcat cartridges are boutique, and Hornady adopts cartridges that can be cost optimized and mass produced. They're not going to spend millions on equipment to manufacture cartridges that might turn into grenades if used incorrectly. Hence the 1:5 twist.
@EagleRun2311 сағат бұрын
I hear you and dont disagree, but there is more to this story and the deal with H and Q. Hornady also chickend out on the 1:8 twist for their ARC.

People hate on BCA because the company is owned by criminals. They were formerly Moore Machine Company that produced hot garbage, stiffed a lot of companies on contract orders causing those companies to fold, then were busted by ICE for using illegal workers they didn't pay. None of this is fodder or lore, it's fact. It's all out in the open in legal documents. They closed down for a few years then reopened as Bear Creek Arsenal, same address, same owners. Good on them for getting their act together, but I'll never support them as they screwed over a number of people in the industry that I'm friends with.

@@EagleRun23 They got off by claiming they didn't know they were illegal due to forged identity documentation. They knew when they're hiring machinists at minimum wage. Their history as MMC goes back to the late 2000's in to early 2010's. Bunch of old threads on ARFCOM about them. Their stuff was out of spec garbage. Even barrel bores that didn't match the chamber, non-existent gas ports or the port on the wrong side of the barrel. They shipped this crap to vendors that obviously couldn't sell it. Then ghosted everyone and came back as BCA. If the stuff works for people now, that's cool. I just can't morally support them as I know a bunch of FFL's in NC that lost a ton of money on their crap.

I had been planning a .338 Spectre AR build but it's been on back burner for some health reasons. I have everything except the BCG and barrel. Just as I was about to have a barrel made for the Spectre, I see the announcements about the 338 ARC. With the 338S I can only find "factory" ammo at SBR. Obviously, Hornad-backed 338A ammo would be more accessible and I'd expect other companies to offer it also. So, the point of this rambling post was to ask "if you were at a point in a build where you could go either way, which would choose?".

@EagleRun23 I've got an Aero builder set and all the other pieces except for bolt and barrel. My reason for building is honestly just because I don't have one. Since I retired a few years ago, I've built an AR in virtually most all the calibers (.224 Valkyrie, 22 ARC, 6mm ARC, 350 Legend, 8.6 BLK and so on and so forth). I have so many parts amassed that building both the Spectre and ARC isn't out of the question

I believe that thermal and (digital) NV scopes of today are in the same position as red dots were in the 90s: bulky, expensive and some with questionable performance. With incremental development in microprocessors and components, imagine how more compact, reliable, durable and affordable they will be in 10 years. And that’s before talking about how fast software evolves: scopes with integrated range finding, HUD with range and weather information, real time BDC reticles and target tagging will be common place sooner than we realize.

Big thing is how it performs in the field. If it hits at 500k rpms, I can imagine the performance of the lead bullet itself would be difficult to predict. It may very well come apart with a lot of spalling inside the game, making harvesting more "fun" than it should be. I just can't see lead holding up when it hits. Now if it does, wow. It would be destructive with the weird trajectories on impact.
