Vacuuming Garbage Out of My Yard in Copenhagen

In this instalment of Life-Sized Living, an explanation of the Danish recycling culture and the cool system in many Copenhagen back courtyards for vacuuming garbage out into the garbage truck. Leaving room for residents to enjoy the shared courtyard and eliminating the noise of traditional garbage collection and the smell of garbage.

Bikes are usually either left on the street, in the building courtyard or there is a basement room, usually with access to the street or courtyard for bikes. Almost every building in cph has a courtyard. If you look at a google map of the city you can see them.

Incredible! Here in Los Angeles, like in any US city, the garbage is taken by a truck going from house to house. I've always thought how inefficient and cumbersome such operation is, and recent spike in garbage collection prices (doubled) proves it.

Interesting. I've been living in Copenhagen for 4 years in 4 different places, 2 with common backyards, and all the "restaffald" (normal trash) always went in normal containers. What a fancy backyard you have ;)

Now only to eliminate the need for those millions of small one-use plastic bags. Paper? They are not in your house for long anyway, and the wet stuff already goes into the food waste?

I like it purely on sanitary benefit. It's pure indecent to talk around building and you had to go over slightly darker stain on the road, your nice shoes scream in silence. And all the motorcyclists like me who had to suffer truck's rear in traffic.

80 years you've had a deposit scheme and NSW Australia has only managed a partial scheme in the last two years or so (against opposition from Coca Cola Amatil et al...

there's still some opposition and "but's" to it here in Denmark. Forexample, supermarkets will not take empty bottles and cans from products they don't sell themselves. And certain products don't have the deposit scheme, this includes canned food like soups or even wine or chocolate milk doesn't fit into it. It basically only covers cider, soda, beer, and most spirits with very few exceptions.

I feel like you might hate the following words but how do the Danes collect waste in “lower density”, “suburbs”? Ssss
