The song is sung in the epic by a group of girls who dance together for entertaining Kannagi when Kovalan goes to sell the anklet. This narrates the churning of the ocean episode and extols the virtues of Lord Krishna, known as Maayon and Tirumal.
Noticing ill omens in the neighborhood such as bulls shedding tears, cows wallowing in agony and their neck bells falling on the ground and milk set to become curd not fermenting in due course, the villagers feared some impending tragedy and gathered the cowgirls for a dance called kuravaik kooththu (குரவைக் கூத்து).
Right after this song, Kovalan gets betrayed by the king’s jeweler and accordingly he was murdered on the orders of the king, accused of the crime of stealing the queen’s anklet.
