I was in IT, I retired at 36 making close to $200k a year, I saved most of it as I was never married, housing and food provided. Problem with a 200k job is all the stress that comes with it. Now my budget is 1k per month in the philippines, I'm compounding nicely so far, been here a decade. Philippines is a overcrowded, polluted shithole with anyone that sees me begging for money. I mainly stick to the gym, cooking whole food from the wet market, hanging out at home with my gf kids and dogs. Life could be worse but I would look for a less polluted more developed country if i did it again with actual rights for foreigners. It's open season on foreigners, it's all about what they can get out of you.

Which part of the Philippines did you live?

I lived in the Philippines for over 9 years, Thailand is a MUCH better choice. Better food, not as 3rd world, less crime, better beaches, safer cities.

They are both great places. But I always suggest visiting multiple countries in the same region before putting down really deep roots.

I somewhat agree, albeit I wouldn't characterize it as MUCH better. The major factor that makes Thailand a difficult retirement option is the language. Unlike the Philippines, most of the Thai population do not speak English.

60 or 70k isn't enough, not if you want to retire ever or have a social life, that's the issue. Everything has every penny squeezed out of it, as well as it's soul. I'm just under 40 and even clubs have changed so much in 20 years, they aren't even fun anymore. They've always been expensive, but it's unreal how and all the fun has been sucked out of it.

Yeah, that comment was a bit off base. The problem with the USA isn't the greed of workers, it's the greed of corporations and the "owner" class. Working class people can't get ahead in the US anymore because we are being squeezed by rising prices for everything we need to live. The never ending price inflation and the absurd political environment in the US are the primary reasons I am leaving when I retire in 5 years. The USA is in decline and I don't want to be here when things really fall apart.

@dlg5485 this guy is part of the donor class and why our policies are wildly out of touch with the reality of the median worker, especially since 08. If we had some growth from WW2 to 08 from 08 to today the median workers wages would go up from 70k to 85k which is wildly different. Now the median worker gets to choose two out of three of "retirement, fun, healthcare" essentially. The whole system is broken and people acting like 15 an hour is what 15 an hour was even 10 years ago. Thankfully millennials seems to understand these things better than GenX and Boomers and can certainly sympathize with Doomers and GenA. Im late 30s and can understand the actual issues whereas GenX and Boomers are beyond brainwashed by corporate propaganda as he showed here. And he's clearly a sharp guy, but we are probably the most indoctrinated people in the world. It's never the system, it's always a matter of personal responsibility to them, which is a total joke at this point. Probably because he's hanging around with other people making 2-3x median wages who are terrible with money and extrapolating that out. When the median worker cant afford retirement and living independently without roommates, that's a major problem. Ask these people to make a budget on 5k a month that includes retirement and health food and they'll just shut down. I know my own personal bills are nearly 3k month just to survive (basic 1 bedroom in the hood in low income neighborhood in FL, groceries, energy, and various miscellaneous expenses of modern life) and I don't even have a car and have free healthcare. Something will have to give af some point because we have essentially transferred wealth upwards through QE and MMT and favorable tax schemes.

Clubs. I have been to clubs in 12 states and 20 countries - every single one was just a waste of time and money. Plus the owners always pay a few good looking ladies to sit at the bar until about 1:00am, just to lure men into buying drinks and hanging around.

Today they absolutely sucked and it's essentially an Instagram checklist thing. Everyone having cameras on them at all times has made things lame

He retired at 54 and does whatever he wants now. Hard not to be happy. Beautiful nature, living in a nice place, 1 o2 trips per year swimming with sardines, Turtles and Sharks. Love singing and he is living in the Philippines. It is clear to me why he happy.

The Philippines is the extension of the US, could have been the 51st state but not did not happen though. The best thing is the Philippine culture and traditions, the fanily community culture and the humanity inside are so alive and so rich. The Kenny Rogers Roasters had already been in the Philippines since 1995. That is how connected the Philippines to the US is. Inside the huge malls are the cinemas where senior citizens have a discount, sometimes in other areas they are free to watch.

Why not just spend like 3-4 months per year in each? Throw Bali in there for good measure 😎 currently in Thailand and I do prefer it over Philippines.. but you have to really know what you're doing to mitigate certain challenges living in the Phils that you more than likely won't deal with in other SEAsian countries. I'm glad that the gentleman is happy and content with his new life though.

If I was in the habit of taking free advice from others to ensure social acceptance I would not be the person I am today living my best life overseas. You would never have seen this video because my grey hair and I would be back in the USA pushing paper around a desk. All the advice I got back when I decided to travel the world was to keep my nose down on the grindstone for another 20 years. So, I will continue to find my own way through the wilderness. Probably Vietnamese and Thai ladies. Vietnamese women are beautiful. Vietnam was occupied by France for 200 years. Vietnamese people say that has nothing to do with it but they have different cheek bones, which gives them a fuller face and a different skin tone unlike other southeast Asian’s. Thailand has never been occupied by a foreign country besides trading during the Indian Empire. Thailand has three skin types. “Light Skin” which is more Chinese. “Tan Skin” which is more Southeast Asian. “Dark Skin” which is an Indian mix. So you get a variety of looks in Thailand, depending on what you prefer.
