This vlog may be the tipping point for me on where to retire. I’ve always leaned heavily toward Thailand since I’ve been there 30 times since 2005. I’ve been there Ho Chi Min City and Dalat once before. Dalat was very pleasant and cool. The more I learn about Vietnam, especially the weather, my curiosity is growing. I think I will get a 90 day Visa on my next adventure.

You should spend at least 2-4 weeks in each location: Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hoi An...even Phan Thiet is a good choice. You should go to local markets, normal cafes, stay at home instead of hotels, do volunteer activities...you will have great experiences and friends. I can't say Vietnam or Thailand is better but the cost in Vietnam is cheaper, the scenery in Vietnam is also more beautiful, of course the tourism service in Thailand is better. I think you can live decently on $350 when the locals spend $150. I think you can live a great life on $1000.

My first trip to Nha Trang was in 1990. Took all day to get up there from Saigon. It was getting dark as we approached the city and the driver started speeding up. I asked him why. He said because his headlights were not working! Now the trip takes about 6 hours on mostly modern highways. Nha Trang is a wonderful place with great people and for someone looking to get to the most interesting places then working with someone local like this man is the way to go. I have been very lucky. I met a Vietnamese girl in New York in 1976 and married in 1977. We moved to Saigon full time in 1995. I am now 70 years old and retired and still married having just celebrated our 47th anniversary. Obviously… Vietnam and even Nha Trang despite its beautiful mountains and beaches is not for everyone. Test the waters before selling your house but if anything like me you will love it here. I only made my first trip out of Vietnam in the last five years recently but not to NYC but rather to India for a tour of Rajasthan. It’s not that I have any particular problem with America. It’s just that I am happier here.

I am vietnamese. I left Vietnam in 1984 and have not gone back due to brutal communist. I love it here in the USA. I do believe America is the greatest country on earth. There is still lot of animosities for me in Vietnam. There is no freedom at all. You talk trash or even crack a joke about Ho Chi Minh you will end up in jail. unlike US .!!!!! When people bring US dollars to one of the poorest country like Vietnam to live or vacations yes that is pretty nice and beautiful at the same time too many hungers and poverty people surrounding you. Hi Dan, Charlie from Boston USA here. 61 year old biker from the northeast. Retired at 55. I was down in Mexico the last couple of years. But Asia was calling me and I was in Hanoi November and December. I am coming back next month. I will drive from Hanoi with a friend of mine down to Danang. She knows her way around very well. I would love to meet that guy. I have to come back to Boston for the summer, but if I love Danang I will return and get a place near the Beach. I would absolutely like that guy to show me around Vietnam. I will look him up next month. He shouldn’t be hard to find he had a good energy I had a bike in Mexico. driving was not a problem. I got my groceries my laundry, and made my way to the gym and the beach. I even had some nice rides in the mountains and along the coast .Driving looked crazy in Hanoi. But I would give it a whirl in Danang. That guy seems to know his way around Thanks for everything you do brother. Peace.

@@nang8683 I am flying out in the morning, brother. I may have checked it out there if I had the time I appreciate you looking out for me. I loved Vietnam. I did fly down to Danang and I rode in the mountains & along the coast, I loved it . I went too many beautiful destinations too many to mention I have Vietnamese friends here, I will tell you there were many pros during my nine weeks here. cost-of-living number one. Medical and dentists were great here. No crime nobody shooting dope on the corner no homelessness. I am from Boston. I have to step over that stuff to get into my doctor The people were curious, here very inquisitive, gracious, and kind. I have never felt so welcomed. The food, although it is good is cooked in a lot of oil and salt. I put on 6 pounds and I go to the gym five days a week. There is a very big language barrier. And I spent 4000 American dollars flying here twice in the last six months. I can rent a house in Mexico for one year for 4000. . I will only be in America for one week and I found a flight down to Mexico from Boston for 170 American. I can fly to see my children in New York in California from Mexico for that same price. Mexico ticks alotta boxes for me to settle. I will get another bike down there and I have friends down there. They are currently looking for a small house near the beach for me to rent. I would love to come back to Vietnam one day such a beautiful country and beautiful people. Peace🙏

I'm surprised I don't know your guest. I got here in "89"Been here 35 years. Back then American's weren't allowed to travel to Vietnam. Trade embargo. It was like going to Cuba 10 years back. Secret police dressed up like cyclo drivers followed us everywhere. All the expats at that time would meet at the Apocalypses now bar on Dong Du street at 8pm. My friend and I were the only American's there. Then it moved to Mac Thi Buoi st, Now it's a big place on Thi Sac st. Back then Saigon was a paradise. Few cars, few bikes, many Ox carts and cyclos, still had the old blue and yellow Renault taxis we rode in during the war, none of the old hotels had changed since "75" Clean air, clean streets and the Vietnamese loved us as soon as they figured out we weren't Russians but were American. I run Big Daddy's axe throwing club in Saigon, have photos from back in the day, customers love looking at them and trying to figure out where they were taken. Most expat customers are teachers, don't get may tourists, being in D-2 we aren't on the tourists routes. Nha Trang used to be my favorite city too until the Russians and then Chinese rolled in. Vietnam is a great place to retire.

Hi guys. Really enjoyed this video and all of yours!! Would you be able to interview single, mature women retiring to these countries? Not young nomads. I know its mostly men, hugely because they want a younger gf/wife. I'm a widow, not going to another country to meet a man, although open if great one comes along lol. I've lived in Coata Rica but looking for something less expensive, safer with great inexpensive, accessible healthcare. I'm very healhly now but you never know what might come up. Would love to find an expat community/country with single women in Asia or Indonesia. Are there any???? 🤔 lol. All these channels really are mostly for men 😔 Thank you

I live in Vietnam. And I am a very experienced economist. In my opinion, this is another bogus cost of living video. You can NOT live in a developing or any other country for $1000/month if you come from an advanced country UNLESS you greatly lower your living standards. Can you live in a tiny studio with all kinds of construction noise and karaoke at night and morning? If you think you're going to live in Vietnam for $1000/month, get ready for very low standards. You can do that back in the USA and you will get free housing and food if you are poor. You won't get a red nickel in Vietnam if you run out of money. And if you want to live the same middle class standard from the west as in Vietnam, you will pay more than in your country. These are facts you won't hear from these BS YT channels. For instance, I pay $2,000/month for my apartment in Vietnam. I pay $45,000/year for each of my children for international school which is a must if you want your children to have a chance in this world. I also paid $350,000 for a BMW (3x the price as you get in the USA). And my food is about the same cost. You cannot eat the cheap food from the street. Much of the food has toxic chemicals so you need to buy groceries at a foreign store. And you need to eat at nice restaurants. Medical care is pretty bad for advanced procedures. You won't survive a heart attack here. Remember, these channels are selling you something....complete BS. Also, @9:35 this man mentions too many rules in the USA but not in the communist country of Vietnam LOL. This man clearly has some kind of mental issue to make these ridiculous claims. @13:00 he talks about some kind of marriage test for a couple with 30+ year difference. This is 100% BS.

Hi @userdhss-hsjs, Looking down your nose at people with less money than you is not all that charming. You are what I call a Nuevo colonialist. I would have removed your insulting comment about my guest, but your comment provides some insight into the type of thinking that some expats overseas have. Many ex-pats live on 5 to 10 times the average wage in foreign countries, others do not need so much money. It is about finding the best place for you based upon your available resources at retirement and preparing properly for the lifestyle you require. At this link, I share my observations on this topic after watching the different kinds of ex-pats living overseas for the last 15+ years. This report is on my webpage: vagabondbuddha.com/why-most-people-do-not-retire-cheap-overseas/ Thanks for commenting, Dan

@@Byron4RollTide ….I am Vietnamese living in Houston, Texas since 1975. I have returned to VN since 2010….I stayed in Ho Chi Minh City from 2015 - 2018….and came back. That was my longest. Let me summarize: Ho Chi Minh City is very crowded and polluted, but you can find EVERYTHING there. Too HOT! Small cities like Vỉnh Long are CUTE and sparse, it’s QUIET living there! Da Lat is like San Francisco weather!! Perfect year round (because it is up in the mountains), but things are more expensive. Phu Quoc island is huge and seafood abundance but super super expensive. Stay away from Ha Noi. I have NOT been to Da Nang! However I plan to go there this year for two months. I know it’s VERY HOT from May - August. High = 104F….Low = 75F…So I try to go in September (start of rainy season). The best time is December- March (weather is gorgeous; High = 75F…Low = 65F). I am scoping out a place to retire. Food is cheaper than HCMC. However, because it is a smaller city…most will get bored fast…especially when the weather gets HOT in the Summer. Nha Trang is similar to Da Nang but the beach waters there are not as pretty. I just got my VN passport (after 15 years of travel). I don’t have to do a VISA run anymore. I can now buy property there. The U.S. is getting violence with illegals coming into Texas!
