I did a few years of DBT therapy (dialectical behavioural therapy) and this is an actual skill we were taught (dunking head down, with ice water or ice pack) and practiced a LOT for crisis management situations (when emotions become unmanageable, or suicidal thoughts take over). It actually works! You can over use it though, but there are other skills to use while in extremely dysregulated emotional states, but in crisis situations its a great skill to have. The next step in the skill is to run or jump on the spot for 3 min to increase BP. and then to just keep cycling between the ice water/ head dunking and then exercise until we have calmed down enough to control our emotions, emotional regulation. It works amazingly well.

Thank you for mentioning chronic fatigue syndrome. I was gaslighted by the mainstream medical community for over 10 years until I found a nutritionist who specializes in endocrinology who could help pull me out. That took another 10 years of my life. In total, CFS took 20 years of my life, and 12-14 years of my children's childhoods. It is so good to hear someone talk about it sympathetically, rather than dismiss all people with CFS as lazy, attention seeking hypochondriacs. I wouldn't wish it upon an enemy.

I'm always so happy to see medically trained conventional people recognise these illnesses. Nearly 50% of cfs is misdiagnosis. Until we find thar special dr, who takes time to dig deep and find out what's going on. We are gaslighted so badly. Thank you for all you do to educate.

C-ptsd here- sandwich of healthcare as a child, then family, followed by school, work, then healthcare again which gaslit me when I was having a stroke during covid and mold toxicity in march 2020 - anniversary syndrome, talk about ptsd. And that mold toxicity may have worked you over so much it caused the stroke &/or the S.A.R.s CoVID 19 too ? We need national health care, dental, eye and mental healthcare. Hope you're able to find closure. My daughter dealing with toxic mold from renting home in LA. She had 3 jobs, fell ill, lost 2 and we are having to pay her hotel for 3 months now. Rent is insane in Calif. She has no healthcare then top it off she was hit and run while walking so in extreme pain from that, plus mold and no way to get hospitals to test her blood for molds. City got involved, stated home was uninhabitable, she had no money to move so forced to breath 5 toxic molds, brain fog. Single mom with two children and absolutely no help from deadbeat dad. I now have PTSD from all this and her broken down car that needed smogged so cop pulled her over and nicely allowed her 1 month to remedy it. Now you get why so many are homeless out there...at $4,500 mo rent ..for single person is impossible! Her brother, my son was impaled at work through his leg, medical costs are over $3.4 million and over 21 surgerys. Life sucks.

@@michellepernula872 National Healthcare is a horrible idea. It is WORSE than what we have in the US. I know people in Canada, and they do nothing but complain, and get put off, until they are extremely sick. I have researched the issue as well. National healthcare is communist. You want that? Move to Canada, or chi na. Yes our system needs some adjustments, BUT never to that system of the lowest possible denominator. There is a reason people in Canada come to the US for treatment.!! Not only for those reasons, but the cost, for what you get is horrible. You pay out the arse, and get squat! We pay enough in taxes. I want the freedom to choose, not to be dictated to, as in those systems. But I value freedom, and the right to make my OWN decisions. Don't want big daddy government making my choices...or limiting my choices., as they so much like to do.

reset-ra dot study : "Vagus Nerve Stimulation The immune system typically uses inflammation to help your body fight infection and recover from injury. However, too much inflammation leaves the immune system unbalanced, causing autoimmune diseases like RA. In healthy individuals, inflammation is naturally regulated by an internal pathway- the inflammatory reflex. This inflammatory reflex is controlled by the vagus nerve, which helps to manage the body’s immune system by balancing inflammation. Vagus nerve stimulation uses an implanted device to apply a small amount of electricity to the vagus nerve, which may decrease the kind of inflammation that is present in people with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)." "MicroRegulator Implant Vagus nerve stimulation devices are currently used for the treatment of epilepsy and depression. Because the vagus nerve controls various body functions, including the inflammatory reflex, it has the potential to treat autoimmune diseases, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). MicroRegulator is a new device designed specifically to deliver vagus nerve stimulation for applications like RA. MicroRegulator is an investigational device about the size of a multivitamin capsule, designed to provide electrical stimulation to the vagus nerve specifically to treat RA. MicroRegulator does not administer any drug into the body, but rather, the device applies small electrical impulses to the vagus nerve for about 1 minute a day to activate the body’s natural immune response, which may treat RA. Physicians use an iPad to program each patient’s MicroRegulator to turn on and deliver the therapy automatically every day so that patients do not need to remember to turn on the device." "Implant Procedure The MicroRegulator is placed on the left vagus nerve through a small, inch-sized incision on the left side of the neck. The 60-90 minute implantation procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon while the patient is under general anesthesia. The patient typically returns home a few hours after the procedure, and can resume daily living activities the following day. The implantation procedure is performed by a surgeon with experience in vagus nerve stimulation implant procedures. Before the procedure, your study surgeon will meet with you for pre-surgical clearance. During that time they will review the procedure and can answer additional questions you may have." "Thank you for your interest in the RESET-RA Study. Enrollment in the study has concluded. The next phase of the study is to follow the current participants to determine the outcomes of the study. While we await the results, we have partnered with the Global Healthy Living Foundation (GHLF) to keep you up to date on the study and provide additional educational resources for management of RA. Please visit CreakyJoints dot org/reset-ra for a community of support, free resources, and tools to help you live better with RA. As the parent organization of CreakyJoints®, a worldwide digital community serving millions of arthritis patients and caregivers, GHLF provides free education, support, advocacy, and patient-centered research in both English and Spanish."

I am soooo thankful to have run across this video. Several years ago, as I was being prepped for an outpatient procedure, I had my 1st vasal vagal response. I literally wasn’t sure if I would puke, pass out or jump out the window. It was terrifying!! They used ZOFRAN to help me overcome it. Since it happens sooo often now, and not just when getting an IV, which seems to be my major trigger (although I am not bothered at all by shots, needles or IVs at all - except now with this, which is annoying!) Anyway…. I now notify everyone that I have these issues happen & that ZOFRAN seems to help. So then everyone is prepared for something I can’t seem to control or change. I’m hoping that by watching this video a few more times, I will glean info that may help me safely reset my vagal nerve. I’m praying for a long term, non-invasive solution. So we shall see…. Anyway…. Thank you for all this good info!!!

WOW! Tragus stimulation. Many, many years ago, maybe 50 or so, a friend told me an acupuncturist had put a "staple" (his term) put into the tragus of his mom's ear to help her stop smoking. Indeed, his mom was able to stop smoking with little struggle by merely touching the staple when the desire to smoke came along. I was extremely (!!!) skeptical at that time thinking it was only a placebo effect. But...

I am fascinated, with the new information. I have done some of these things because I have SVT. I've had many tests, and there is nothing wrong with my heart. It jut happens, for NO apparent reason. I'm not doing anything to cause a heart rate increase. It has jumped to 208 bpm! No medications work, but I'm told there aren't any, anyway. Which is fine, because I have very odd reactions to pharma, beside being VERY sensitive to dosage. So, I've tried the Vagal nerve tricks. They've worked, but slower than your ice water demo. I do put ice packs under my arm pits, and on my face at different times. I've doused my face in cold water from the sink....never with ice, and a full face immersion. I had no idea that I needed to focus on the right side vagal nerve. I also have PTSD. So I'm VERY interesting in that little device, and other information. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. MORE PLEASE on this subject.

I am blown away with your video. I have had so many so called unrelated things going on in my body since young. Some my father and other members have also suffered. One in common is anxiety, but in my case developed into PTSD. Another was debilitating palpitations which in my case required many trips to hospital to bring under control. Another is fatigue and shortness of breath. Loosing vision while wide awake and cramping in the left neck that can only be relieved by pressure on the vertebrae and many other unexplained issues. Doctors think that I imagine these as they cannot find anything wrong other than the palpitations which is obvious and the almost lack of pulse that also happens around this time. I think you are on to something that will help many sufferers. Thank you so very much as I now feel there is hope for us that at the present time have none. ❤

❤ I was an EMT and there were two occasions where I went on calls where people have apparently done a valsalva maneuver while defecating on the toilet and it brought them into cardiac arrest. I would not suggest straining while holding your breath and very strongly bearing down if you have any type of heart irregularities, and only if you have spoken to your PCP about its use in other settings. Even if you don't have a heart irregularity you may have one that you're not aware of. ❤

As a test engineer, I would not be satisfied with the face dunking test unless you first did a test of merely bending over to see what change it caused, and then merely bending over and holding your breath to see what changes were caused. Only then would I be satisfied with the ice water dunk itself.

I was on morphine for 25 years. I was also in a lot of pain most of the time, especially “bone pain”. Interestingly, nine years ago, I decided to wean off morphine, going very slowly over almost an entire year. I had less pain OFF the morphine than I did ON IT! The bone pain was caused by the drug, as my body always wanted more than it was getting- tolerance. Unfortunately, a year later I got full body, inside and out, burning, crippling neuropathy and POTS, which are much more disabling than the pain ever was. 😒

Hello Dr. Kaveh. I have a question regarding the vegas nerve and anesth. During induction, does the vagus nerve try to respond in a " threat to life" mode? It would seem to me, that the vagus nerve wpuld detect the "attack" on the body, or as a threat and try to respond to it. I was reading Stephen and Seth Porges' book "our Poly Vagal World" and it brought this question to mind. I love your videos and learn a lot of them. Thaank you for your time. They are important techniques and certainly one would exercise care with carotid massage. I had a minor surgery some years ago and while I was in postop the surgeon and anesthesiologist went off shift. My heart rate skyrocketed and my pcp was paged on the speaker and he actually didn’t know what to do so I worked as a nurse and told what dose of adenosine and to fast push it but it only went down a few then drove back up and I was getting very close and I asked my doctor to focus on the vagus nerve massage while I tried the valsalva maneuver. It worked and I have sacral nerve damage as well as PTSD and these methods have saved my life. Big thanks to everyone who went home right? Btw I have used a tragus stimulator in surgery. I believe that it helps and since I have had heart problems and I believe that it is a safer way to deal with this. I rub my own tragus nerve area when I can feel even my blood pressure take off. I wish they were available to use in public. Thank you!❤

I’m very pleased I happen to come across your channel. I’ve had a VNS implant for a little over three years. Unfortunately I have seen very little improvement in my depression since having it placed. Furthermore, it’s definitely challenging to deal with the side effects, loss of voice when implant is active. (Every three minutes cycling for 45 seconds). Pain and discomfort, left frontal area, cheek and jawline. Definitely very disappointed with the result. Thanks for sharing this video.

Another tool to put in your toolkit for quickly reducing stress/anxiety is called cyclic sighing. It works super fast. This asapScience video (see below) explains how it works. If has to do with how your breathing affects your heart and your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. I use this technique in conjunction with sensory deprivation (earplugs + sleep mask) to reduce overstimulation, homemade gel ice packs, ASMR and medical cannabis as needed. I need way less cannabis each day now that I've got cyclic sighing down pat, though. Another thing my counselor of 15 yrs told me is to submerge your tongue in cold cold water. Lifting your tongue a little to let some water under it will help even more but if you can't, it's okay.

I have trigeminal neuralgia and I'm guessing the surgery you are getting is called "MVD" or micro vascular decompression? It is used frequently for TN as the pain is often caused by a compression of the nerve root. Best of luck to you 🤗 There are support groups of Facebook for people getting this surgery, as well as for people who have trigeminal neuralgia, in case that is why you are getting this surgery.

I recently finally got into Dr. Turner's office in Memphis, TN and learned that what I thought was PoTS triggered by Covid and was diagnosed with may actually be more accurately Vagus nerve damage. I actually do the grunting thing already but knowing this information. I thought I was just whinging because there was nothing else I could do and it felt like doing SOMETHING at least. 😅 I wonder about the effects of getting the tragus pierced? I got my daith pierced to help my severe migraines. I didn't believe it would work but someone told me to try it and I was ready to try anything. It actually DID almost completely stop my migraines for about 6 months, then they slowly started to come back but at first only on the side that wasn't pierced. They eventually returned just as bad as they used to be but the temporary reprieve from that pain was 100% worth it. (I've done found a medication that has almost completely stopped them❤) I wonder if a tragus piercing may have a similar affect? Autonomic dysfunction is so hard because not only is it debilitating, it's invisible so it's hard for people to believe that you aren't taking or exaggerating your symptoms. The fact that it encompasses so much so there are so many things wrong doesn't help. I would do anything to get back to the very active life I once had.

19:06 Why is it called a “dirty” nerve? That it’s confusing because it handles so much? Why not call it a super nerve? The body is a fascinating, self-healing, sacred, biological entity and learning cabal theory just proves that. 20:00 also there are a few other ways to treat the root cause of PTSD without side effects: EFT tapping, Sound Vibrational therapy, breathwork, trauma work, to name a few Glad you are looking at natural remedies first 👍🏼

I'm curious if you have encountered someone like me. Most of the time they have to use multiple doses of anesthesia because I won't go out, nor do I get sleepy. For example my last eye surgery. I had to have Lasik eye surgery on both eyes. The first time I was terrified. I went right out, no issues, it was a breeze. I go back for my other eye. Anesthesia dose 1, no effect. Dose 2, no effect. The doctor looks at the anesthesiologist and he said he can't give me anymore. So, now I have PTSD from watching a scalpel come at my eye. The anesthesiologist is trying to hold my head still and the doctor is telling me to try to hold my head still because at this point my entire body is shaking. Then, I go on for my follow up and he said that something very rare happened and now they need to do laser eye surgery in both eyes. Rare and I go hand in hand. It's been years since my eye surgeries, and I have not gotten the Lasik correction. No so due to the fear, but because things went bad for me. So, have you ever had a patient who was resistant to anesthesia?
