I wrote a story for this day: Mickey stood at the precipice of the unknown, a lifetime of stories behind him, a future of the untold ahead. "Are you ready?" Asked a voice behind him. Mickey turned around, and warm memories filled him as he faced his old creator. Tears of joy, Mickey rushed over to hug him. It had been so long, and Mickey felt the warmth of the embrace as he remembered all the times he had once shared with the man who had been like to him a father and a friend. Finally, the two pulled apart and Mickey looked up into the eyes of of the legend that had been so important in shaping the childhoods of so many generations. "Your time has come," said Walt, "you have done well." Mickey looked back in the direction of the unknown and felt a sudden twinge of uncertainty; what would he become? Would he bring joy, or darkness? "For so many years," said Walt, "you have brought joy into the hearts of generations under my watchful eye and leadership, but now it is time for you to step beyond and explore the potential inside you beyond even what I can give. Yes, there may be dark times, but there will also be so much more." Mickey could see heartfelt tears pooling in Disney's eyes as he spoke. " You have made me into the man that I was in life, and now it is time for you to spread some of that same hope and inspiration to the world in ways I could've never imagined. The whole world is yours now and the limits to what you can be are endless. Mickey my dear mouse, through all the years you've been what you are, you are now free; your time is now to become more than you ever could be." Mickey looked into the eyes of the great Walt Disney and felt the memories of the worlds they had shared together rushing through him. But now it was time for him to go. Mickey grabbed his hand and held it tight. "Thank you for making me into Mickey Mouse." Mickey said. Disney gave a gentle smile, "That was simply one step on your journey." And then Mickey released the hand of his creator, and turned to face the future ahead. Behind him Walt called out, "Remember, with all that lies ahead of you, you will always have a place amongst us to call your own." A home to return to, but not the only one, for now the whole world was his home. So, feeling the pitter-patter of his heart within his chest, Mickey closed his eyes and let out a deep breath... Then, the clock struck midnight, and Mickey took his first step into the Public Domain.

This is so awesome to live in a world where we now own at least one version of Mickey Mouse. But as a reminder, in case anyone is wondering what that means for the Disney Logo with Steamboat whistling away that plays on their movies, Disney still owns that because they've trademarked use of that clip for THAT specific purpose. And trademarks can be renewed indefinitely, so long as Disney proves that they will continue using that Steamboat clip for the purposes of a logo, which they certainly are and probably don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Also, don't forget that ONLY the Steamboat Willie version of Mickey is in the public domain. All subsequent iterations of him that came AFTERWARDS are still under Disney's thumb. So no, you can't do whatever you want with Mickey's current red shorts and yellow shoes look, just his original black and white design from Steamboat specifically. Oh and also don't forget that MINNIE makes her debut here, meaning she is just as much fair game as Mickey! ;) Aside from those facts, I hope everyone has fun with Steamboat Willie!

@RANima71498 Жыл бұрын
@@mrqwerty567 funny you mention Pete actually. He’s the oldest Disney character, as his first appearance WASN’T Steamboat, but instead was Alice Solves the Puzzle, a 1925 short film that comes from the obscure Alice Comedies live action/animation hybrid series that Disney made in the early to mid 20’s. Yep you heard me right. Pete is older than Mickey by 3 years. His appearance in Alice Solves the Puzzle is that of a bear rather than a cat, but it is him. His more iconic cat appearance did appear later in Steamboat, so technically, both old versions of him are public domain now.

Sorcerer Mickey goes public domain in 2036!
@RANima71498 Жыл бұрын
@@wrong214studios9 I think galloping’ gacho is technically not yet also technically yes? Let me explain better: Even though it was made before Steamboat, it wasn’t widely released until about a year later, because Walt wanted to focus on Steamboat first and foremost. And while its silent version was completed by that point, its sound version, which is the one that most people who know of it may know, won’t enter the public domain until 2025, alongside the sound version of Plane Crazy, another Mickey Mouse short that predates Steamboat and is in fact the actual technical first appearance of Mickey, but like Gaucho is in a weird bubble with the different copyrights of its silent and sound versions. It’s a weird sort of Schrodinger’s cat sort of thing: they’re both in the public domain but also not? But to mainly conclude and summarize as best as I can, the silent versions of Plane Crazy and Gallopin’ Gaucho are now in the public domain as of today, while their sound versions need another year to go before they can enter. Look forward to 2025, guys. Then you can also get your hands on the original first appearance of Mickey Mouse too!

Fun Fact: This is actually the FOURTH Mickey Mouse cartoon to have entered the Public Domain! The other three are: "Minnie's Yoo-Hoo" "Mickey's Surprise Party" (An ad for Nabisco products) And "The Mad Doctor" (A.K.A. "The one where a mad scientist kidnaps Pluto, then sings about grafting his head onto the body of a chicken...and scared me when I was ten.") 😅

The fact this has caused so many to pay attention to this short whereas before people might not have cared besides Disney adults shows that this will still score big for Disney. Especially when people try to extract Mickey Mouse and get slapped with trademark infringement lawsuits.

Now that Steamboat Willie is in the public domain, I wonder what kind of crazy projects people are going to make out of it? I hope someone makes a video game for it, preferably a non-horror video game. Also, it occurs to me that the version of Pete that shows up in this short is also now part of the public domain.

It's funny to see how many people completely forgot that Disney has basically weaponized every single trademark you can think of with Mickey mouse. We'll never be able to use Mickey in our own creations without navigating around the legal mind field that is Disney's trademarks with the character.
