These avalanches are made on purpose with explosives so that situations like the one in the link don’t happen. Often after a heavy snowfall they survey overhangs and possible avalanche zones and diffuse the threats with directed explosions long before skiers hit the slopes. They also start them when ice sheets form after some sun exposure and temperature difference of the layers.

Hallo Vielen Dank für den ausgezeichneten und lehrreichen Film. Gratuliere, super erklärt und gemacht. Ich hoffe diesen Film sehen die zwei grobfahrlässigen Bergführer vom Lawinenunfall an der Jungfrau im Juli 2007. Damals sind 6 Militär-Rekruten ums Leben gekommen. Es hatte in 48 Stunden vor dem Unglück 120cm geschneit. Die zwei Bergführer sind am ersten Tag danach in einen 45 Grad steilen Hang an der Jungfrau, oberhalb dem Rottalsattel eingestiegen. Es wurde ein Schneebrett ausgelöst, und 6 Rekruten stürzten 1000m in die Tiefe. Unglaublich, die 2 Bergführer wurden vom Militargericht freigesprochen. Ich wünsche gute Touren. Mit alpinen Grüssen Raphael Wellig aus der Schweiz

What's amazing is someone has planned that all out. They knew to fire at certain points, at certain times and the whole thing would run. That's incredible and a massive amount of snow.

Thats not amazing, that's an example of a remote trigger on an adjacent face. Cracks in the weak layer of snow propogate through the snowpack like glass breaking.

@@dinglesdingler1211 Thanks. My dad rigged charges for the State Highway Dept. in Colorado to drop on slide areas from helicopters. They also used a small howitzer they towed behind a truck and for a few years used a recoilless rifle mounted in the back of a dodge truck. The "Riverside" slide on Red Mountian Pass can run about half as wide as this. Red Mountain has over 300 charted slides just on the pass alone. I don't care what you think, I say it's amazing technology used by amazing people who have taken the time to understand one of nature's most destructive forces and use that to protect others.

@@brianbassett4379 Where I was raised, and long before me or any highway, it was a steam locomotive. THAT would have been hairy. (Steam locomotive rotary slow-blowers are another amazing thing and they used them.) As the roads went in, more of the slides were impeding traffic and sometimes killing people. Though, usually, it was a plow driver or Cat operator. My dad was a "powder monkey" (licensed to handle explosives). There were like four or five others that did it but they were the guys shooting the guns and dropping charges. That wasn't my dad's main job. He had his license long before, but he was used when one of the others wasn't available. I can't imagine how the old guys made it.
