Duplet stability is only for the 1st shell as it has only the s orbital.

The maximum electrons of 1st shell is 2 and of second is 8. Helium has the atomic number 2 so, if it is a duplet, then it's valence outermost shell is filled. Hence it will not react But in beryllium, the atomic number is 4 and if it wants to fulfill the valence electrons, it needs total of 10 electrons and it is having only 4 That is why it reacts
