To Josh's point, I have a favorite saying "comparison kills creativity and joy." Looking to other couples extravagant displays extinguishes the passion in your own relationship. I don't really like valentine's as a romantic holiday because I would prefer to have our own relationship specific things to celebrate, maybe we celebrate the day we first met, maybe we celebrate the day we bought our house etc. To me valentine's is a romantic holiday only for highschool relationships and maybe the first year you're together when you haven't built a store of your own memories yet.

I know people who were married on Valentine’s Day and I know people who’s birthday is on Valentine’s Day. I’ve occasionally had Valentine’s gifts, but not really celebrated with a significant other. I also know the pagan origins of Valentine’s Day so that changed a lot of what I thought it was about. If people partake in it, it can be for any type of love, it doesn’t just have to be a passionate type love.

In 2016 I started college as a mature student, and only my husband had regular income coming in. We decided to do Cheesy Valentines Day from now on. We get each other €10 worth of ridiculous tat from the pound shop (i.e. dollar store), and we get a takeaway and stay home.
