Also these videos are a way for influencers to attract the attention of companies for sponsorship opportunities. Putting more money into the pockets of influencers and companies while the consumers rack up more debt.

I have a retail therapy practice that I like to do to counter videos like this. I go to a store like TJ Maxx or Home Goods and walk around, look at and touch things, really drink in the sheer amount of STUFF on offer. And then I imagine everything on the shelves in my apartment in one big pile. That I would have to store it, keep track of it, constantly rotate it according to season. How much garbage it all would generate. Then I leave without buying anything.

Watching these videos does the same thing for me. Obviously the context of deinfluencing helps, but just the sheer amount of STUFF I've seen by the time I've watched these makes me feel faintly nauseated.

If you’re using boiling water you might as well mop with just that bad maybe some like lemon😂 bc babe I don’t think the actual active ingredients in your cleaner are going to work at that temp hahah. @racheltrafford1 Based on what I know about chemistry unless a cleaning agent has enzyes, it will work no matter the temperature, and will work Faster/more aggressively the hotter the water is. Boiling water is Overkill though. You risk more fumes forming, and some things boil faster than water. (Don't boil undiluted vinegar in an electric kettle, it will boil over! Speaking from experience...)

Thankfully, my spouse likes to celebrate Valentine’s Day the same way I do: the morning of Feb 15, I go to the grocery store and buy all the $1 candy hearts I can find on clearance. Then we we give out at work, at the doctor’s office, at the stylist - where ever else we’re going in the next couple days. It reminds me of giving out Valentines cards in class when I was a kid

I just started knitting and crocheting and it has really helped me shift my mindset about products, especially clothing and home decor. I think to myself, “Someone had to make that.” Either directly by their own hand or operating a machine, and someone had to design it. That’s someone’s labor. If I’m gonna get it, I need to keep it and care for it, not declutter it in a few months. I crocheted a tote bag recently and it took me about 45 hours. That’s a full week at a job. Obviously, other garment makers are faster than me, but idk. It really helped me see things differently.

@K-yp8tb Yes, I have had the same experience, having just started learning to crochet. It is making me really recognise the work that goes into clothes so much more than I used to and therefore think twice whether I will get as much out of a clothing item as it deserves given the work that must gave gone into it.

it's crazy too once you've made yarn yourself to realise how much work goes into everything. like if a pattern calls for 300g of yarn, imagine how much work had to be done to produce that yarn for you. granted we have machinery for it now but i've spun yarn with a drop spindle and it's crazy you can work on it all day and not have enough for the heel of a sock

i have one single water bottle that i wash every day or other day ( i refill it like seven times daily ) i can’t imagine having more than one. my water bottle serves one purpose to me: hydration. it has dents all over it from my cat knocking it off counters and tables, so it’s not pretty or aesthetic. in fact, it has a self-adhesive foam skid sticker on the bottom because it had a dent that caused it to tip over. but i don’t NEED it to be pretty or aesthetic, and the foam sticker doesn’t affect washing or anything. i just need it to be a good enough vessel to carry around without spilling and meet my daily hydration needs.

samesies!! I have heard from people who've collected mugs in the past that it's helpful to rotate through what they have so they pack up certain mugs like one might do if they're packing up a wardrobe. They'll put the summer mugs away, pull out fall mugs. I think this can be a good solution for folks who own a lot, enjoy their mugs and want to keep them around. But, let's be honest, those mugs were included in the video because they were for sale

@kcontreras832 I get that there's a lot of brain rot content on there but on the whole, censoring free speech and the right to assembly for 170 million people, as well as hurting a significant portion of independent businesses and creators in our already fragile economy is an automatic negative. We need to counter this narrative that TikTok was solely a place for stupid dancing videos and people buying stuff, especially now that it's been turned into state-run media and most people don't pay attention enough to know or care.

In some ways, this video influenced me to buy things, but in a way I feel is meaningful. Yesterday I was at a used bookstore and found a postcard made by a local artist that I thought my longtime friend would love, but I didn't end up getting it. It got me thinking about how friendships change when you become adults and don't live near each other. I want to be more intentional about cultivating my friendships and actively being a part off each others lives, and my friends have mentioned wanting to do the same. So I'm going back to the bookstore and all my closest friends are getting a hand-picked locally made Valentine as a small token of my appreciation and love for them, just like we used to do when we were kids hoarding away the best Valentine in the pack to save for our best friend. Many are going through some struggles, and I know they'll be delighted to receive them.

It's easy to get sucked in. Last year, I saw a light pink heart-shaped bundt pan at a store. I had it in my shopping cart for a while, and I was going around, I thought about it. How often would I use it? A. I rarely make cakes except for potlucks or family gatherings (I live alone and can't finish a full-size cake by myself). B. I don't make pound cakes, and pound cakes are mostly what a bundt pan is used for. C. Assuming I did make pound cakes for these potlucks/family gatherings, I can't remember a February potlucks/gathering. So, I put it back. It was adorable. Really, truly was. I'm fine without it. I'll admit I have bought things I didn't really need in the past because it was cute, and I have a regular paycheck. It's fine. I've been learning to stop that habit.

Good move! I've also heard that heart-shaped pans can tend to cause cakes to stick anyway, so it actually makes more sense to use one circular cake and one square cake if you want a heart cake (angle the square like a diamond, cut the circle into semicircles, and then put them against the upper edges of the diamond).

It is scary how easy it is to get sucked in! We were walking around the grocery store the other day and I saw a cute Valentine's themed tumbler. I picked it up, considered it and then put it back. My sweet husband just wants to treat me to cute things so he went to grab it when he saw me looking. I'm pregnant so he tried to justify it as a way to stay hydrated when I'm nursing. I had to physically stand in his way so he couldn't grab it, reminding him I already have two good tumblers I can use to stay hydrated.

I'm still stuck on the fact that Valentine's Day is definitely still one of those holidays that is explictly only celebrated THAT DAY, (as opposed to being a whole season like Easter/spring, Christmas/winter), yet there is SO MUCH crap themed for it that people put up for MONTHS beforehand?? Like I get it to an extent, I like having some kind of decor up for most of the year too and am guilty of "cute-spending", but my very-few Valentine's decorations go up mid-February and come down not long after! I think there are some tough inner conversations a lot of us need to have about why we're choosing to distract ourselves from reality by overspending, letting ourselves be so easily manipulated by capitalist machines churning out pointless stuff for us to buy, and always looking too far ahead to the next "decorating holiday", but I know that's asking too much from most people.

Yeah, I didn't even know people decorated for Valentine's Day at all. Like you I assumed it was a holiday like St Patrick's Day or Mother's Day that's only really celebrated the day of. I figured people buying this sort of stuff like a sweater with hearts on it or a heart shaped bowl/mug/etc were using them year-round because they just like cutesy pink stuff with hearts and bows and it's easy to come by this time of year. The thought of it being another holiday you need to decorate for a month+ ahead of time is insane to me. It just seems so tiring.

I think it's weird to do anything for Valentine's day, but I do like finding any excuse to bake for other people, so I get this from that perspective. 😂 Still, Valentine's Day is basically a holiday invented by Hallmark and others trying to market things to you, it's not a real holiday. Think about why you buy sparkling juice on Valentine's day. It's because it was marketed to you. Stores like the one I work at push this stuff aggressively, making displays and putting it on end caps and putting ads up and doing sales. There's no REAL reason to associate Valentine's day with Martinelli's, and yet we do. Then they started making variations on it because there has to be a million different flavors of every product now. I mean, I like the fancy seasonal chocolate flavors, too, but do we really need a thousand different ones for every season? I respect you making your own chocolate-covered strawberries, because I think the candy-marketing has gotten completely aggressive and out of hand. Times are HARD financially for a LOT of people right now, but you go to any store in America and luxuries are everywhere you look, as though if you buy enough ferrero rochers it will change the fact that wages are stagnant and the middle class has disappeared, and it's only going to be worse going forward.

That includes a pair of work pants because I have lost so many cm's from my waist and thighs that even a belt doesnt really help anymore and skinny jeans are baggy and I don't have any work appropriate pants that fit. I got a bookstore giftcard for my birthday and that will be my book budget for the year. I already have a lot of unread books. I will also not allow myself to buy yarn before I finish a certain amount of projects. I found 12 unfinished pairs of socks when I went through my yarn stash in the beginning of the year. I don't need to buy more before those are finished. In December I sold over 270€ worth of my stuff at a second hand store. I put that to my savings and decided I will not touch it all year, if I don't absolutely need to. I come back to your channel when I struggle.

All I can think about now when I see influencers shopping is that one girl who stole most of the stuff she ‘bought’ and was wearing the same outfit in her TT unboxing video as in the CCTV from Walmart that was used in the investigation. Self snitching at it’s finest, I chuckle every time I think about it 😂😭😂

On the first tiktok, department and grocery stores switch to valentines decor the day after Christmas. I know from work experience. That video is nothing but an ad

The stores are now filled with Easter decorations... in January. Easter is on April 20th... Who is buying those now, 4 months in advance? And WHY?

Ooo I am ready for the Easter slam. I'm a gift giver through and through. Every year I take every opportunity to put a little gift together for my son and valentines day is no exception. But I refuse to let myself be influenced by the pressure of shopping you see online. Like you said it's one thing to be thoughtful and budget about these sorts of things. But it's an entirely different situation if you are only buying and gifting and over consuming just because youre seeing it online and feel like you NEED to participate. I am also so over the Stanley situation and all the little junk nothings that won't serve any purpose other than fitting a certain theme.

While I do enjoy watching how organized this creator is, the cleaning up afterwards and the pretty pink aesthetic, I don’t understand the timing. I don’t think about Valentine’s Day until maybe a day or two before. I usually don’t decorate but I’m not opposed to it. In fact I think I may just put a few pink or red accents out this year. It’s also my son and daughter-in-law’s first Valentine’s Day together married and as they’re living with us right now it would make it more special.❤️

I have a single red shirt that gets worn for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Fourth of July! Haha! Funny enough, I DID buy it for a Fourth of July event I was going to. I realized I had no red and so it became my dedicated red shirt. I cannot imagine buying new clothes for every holiday, vacation, or event in my life! I’m also part of the day after valentines gang! Half-priced chocolates is where it’s at!

The first one was just a fancy infomercial. These people also have their Christmas trees up either the day after Halloween or I saw one who did it even before Halloween. Halloween goes out in August. To me it's rushing our lives away.
