Another way to un-solder the stator wires from the rectifier bridge's connectors, is to place a little solder resin type acid onto each connector. Heat each one with a 450 watt soldering iron. As the acid melts into the connector, hit it with compressed air to blow away the solder. Repeat if needed. Small side cutters and needle nose pliers used in electronics work, can be used to dislodge and remove each wire and open the pinching leads from the rectifier. This eliminate damage to the stator wires, or re-use the rectifier again. Plus, they will be have some solder on both halves to allow for easier re-soldering. Just use rosin type acid soldering paster for electrical connections, it will boil, bubble and melt once hot enough, then apply solder. Don't forget to pinch the connector around the wires as needed to help complete a good soldered joint, that maybe disturbed by vibration. Just a few things learned after decades of rebuilding parts, when they where not offered. ASE Master Tech since 1978.

What a great video my Partners alternator has just gone with the same problem she get really worried when something goes wrong with her car I took the alternator off and it had this problem the slip ring and brushes had worn out was looking to buy a new alternator but they cost to much so I looked to see if i could buy the slip ring and brushes found the kit on eBay and looked to see if I can find a tutorial on how to replace it you’re video was the first one watched you’re video you explained everything very well and have helped me do this repair just want to say thank you for you’re video and explaining how to solve the problem

Found this very therapeutic to watch. I honestly couldn't be arsed to do all this, I'd rather just get a 2nd hand alternator fitted. But I did manage to fit new brushes to mine following the 1st video because I removed my regulator in situ without taking the alternator from the car or messing with the belt. Very good videos, helped a lot!

Hi Martin, I have been doing my own work on my cars over the years (Not a professional) and on occasion would be without my vehicle for between 1 week and ten day waiting for replacement parts, (Alternator, Starter etc). I always assumed that it was financially not worth repairing such items. THANK YOU, you have opened my eyes, I could have repaired alternator or stater in hours. Looks good. I recommend you use a higher quality bearing or pull the seals, clean the old grease and use a high quality moly grease. Those bearings will be noisy in no time. Alternator bearings are subjected to immense heat and electrolysis. With that you will have an A1 top quality rebuild that will last as long as the brushes.

Great video. Just done mine after watching. Didn't go as easy as yours ended up cutting through the old slip rings to free them as no vice available. But once off, the new one fitted perfect. Now just have to put the alternator back together. Its a 90A 14v Valeo

I am having trouble with the Valeo alternator on my Mercedes. I first replaced the voltage regulator on the original alternator and that did not fix it. I actually had someone do it so did not see if the slip rings were bad. I then got a rebuilt alternator and put it on and I still am not charging. I then had a new voltage regulator put on it and I still am not charging. My car has been down for four weeks now. I do not understand this. I don't know what else to do except try to get my money back and just buy a new one. I have never had this kind of trouble with alternators or volt regs before and I have replaced several over the last five decades. And now the clip on the plug is broken from taking it on and off so many times I will have to try to replace that. Your video on this rebuild is very easy to follow.

How come you didnt lathe the slip ring down to check it is square to the shaft? Alos its easier to get your side cutters and cut the spot weld down same way as the stator wires go. this way opens up the clamp parts and then you just spread them a bit more and pull the lead away from the rectifier, This way you still have them for reassembly. thanks for the rotor O/C tip too

Hi Martin, thank you for a simplified presentation. I need advice on the three stator wires that you mentioned in this video. I have a Delco Remy alternator model 13502580. This one has gap in the middle but I’m still not sure whether I need to cut the three stator wires before dismantling the alternator.Sorry I cannot provide a video of the alternator but I’m hoping that you may be familiar with it, and advise me whether I need to cut the stator wires before splitting apart the alternator.

Just paid approx GBP800 (twice the price) in Australia for a trained monkey to switch out a faulty 2014 Renault Trafic alternator ... Unfortunately a work vehicle that was needed back on the road super quick. No one local who repairs these it seems ... On watching this excellent video have bought an ARK109 repair kit ex UK for next to nothing. Will home handyman so I have a reconditioned one as spare if the van runs for another 250K ... or might flog it on and recoup some denarii

Nice video, but one mistake putting on the slip ring. You didnt check the polarity of the rotor. You need to open the wires, leave the old slip ring on and mark the top part of slip ring to the rotor. If you put the slip ring on 180 degrees , the alternator works, but will have a wining noise. Thats why Bosch alternators have a prefixed setting on installing the slip ring.
