In April 2017, Alison Bechdel was named Vermont’s Cartoonist Laureate, an honor that raises questions about the significance of Vermont in her work. This talk traces representations of Vermont in "Dykes to Watch Out For", a 2009 graphic essay on the state, and her most recent memoir, "Are You My Mother?" It places Bechdel’s work in the context of American literary regionalism, with its tensions between the particular and the universal, and considers how they inform her ongoing concern with queer identities.
