This analysis is missing a few important details. First, Andy Warhol was gay. He was several other things as well. Pretty much none of Valerie Solanas‘s descriptions of men applied to Warhol. Second, Warhol had had a lot of problems with the police. They considered a lot of his work politically subversive and some of it pornographic. Warhol knew that and was worried about getting arrested. He’d been repeatedly raided, so he was right to be worried. Solanas wanted Warhol to publish her work. He took one look at it her stuff and thought she was either nuts or a police informer trying to set him up. In either case, he knew that publishing her work would likely get him arrested. That’s why he kept delaying and “lost” her manuscript. He was hoping to buy her off by having her act in one of his films, where he, as the director, could control what she said and did and make sure she didn’t say or do anything that would get him arrested. Solanas didn’t see or didn’t care that Warhol was just trying to protect himself and felt he was just another man controlling and disappointing her. Out of this anger, and to get some notoriety and fame, she shot him. I read the SCUM Manifesto in college, along with a variety of other works. I’m sure a lot of the authors were drunk and/or on drugs when they wrote. The people who write stuff like this are interesting, but are generally pretty broken. They were harmed, they harm themselves, and they harm others. Ticking time bombs in human form. Handle with care and keep at arm’s length. Which is what Andy Warhol tried, but failed, to do. What Valerie Solanas wrote was not satire.

I think Valerie Solanas was a bit of a nutcase and having unrealstic ideas of a "utopia." I think women will have different opinions about this, agreeing with her or finding it extreme and wrong. For me death is not a joke under no circumstances. You can argue if Valerie Solanas was a man and saying this sort of stuff and doing this stuff (especially today) she would be consider evil of thinking that. Why does it have to be justified in her book?

There are some interesting contradictions in the message of Solanas, that are never discussion by those who either praise the message or only review it. If you take what she writes literally, something she herself advocated, then women should be encouraged to carry out the biggest genocide in history, bigger than the holocaust or similar. As far as I know the book does not give any answers as to how this process is compatible with women having a greater capacity for empathy, positive emotions or wanting to create a society, greater than what men and women can create together? Will this new society be a democratic system of governance, based on humanist principles? I belive this society will have to deal with some problematic issues, built as it will be on a mountain of blood and death, a process that will not be able to divide between old and disabled, the young and beskt born. In this respect the text does not make women stand out differently from what can be called typical male atributes. Possibly, there is something more genuinely universal that expresses itself here, such as our common human propensity for violence or violent thoughts?

Solance has never called for genocide. It's just that men are too stupid to understand what she's talking about. She calls for the destruction of the patriarchal identity of men (the man is the head of the family, the rapist, the aggressor, etc.) Apparently, for men not to be rapists and dominant and it's like being dead.-.

I'm confused. You say the book is satirical in the description. But the author said it was supposed to be taken seriously. So, why consider it satirical? Especially from someone with only negative experiences with men and was willing to murder someone. I also don't see what's so funny. Patriarchy is garbage, and I hate how in our patriarchal society, I have to be on a draft in case my country ever decides they need more soliders. But is a genocide really the way of solving it?

I have no idea why people try to intellectualize Valerie’s place in history, or publish her book. It would be much better for society and fighting the patriarchy if we collectively promoted and published new women voices, instead of regurgitating V’s bs just because she got famous for shooting one of the most prolific and celebrated figures of the 20th Century. Valerie was damaged, and completely out of her got-damn mind by the late 60s. End of story. No dissertation necessary. She’s not a feminist hero at all. Her writing doesn’t “upset” me as a man either. As a queer man, I find her views on men moronic, crass, empty, and narcissistic. If anything, her writing and actions set feminism back a few years. I realize it’s “fun-in-a-retro-kinda-way” for modern people to bring her up as an feminist icon, but this is shit we should’ve buried (or “cancelled”) decades ago.

Not a woman, but I really have to question , how a supposed call to kill all men could ever be characterised as Satire. Like, if you would write something about how we should for example eat all children or poor people, how am I supposed to read out it's Satire? Especially if the author is supposedly serious. With that being said, I can understand how people have a contempt for the world and many men.
@CamiiW123
@CamiiW123 2 жыл бұрын
I think what makes it satire is how closely it resembles what Freud said about women during his time. During the 60s and earlier, stuff like this was said about women frequently and it wasn't seen as satire, it was just the way women were viewed by society. But on the other hand, you're right in that it is very blatantly sexist against men and Solanas does make it very clear what her feelings towards men are. I suppose one also have to keep in mind that she was sexually abused for pretty much her entire life, so i suppose it's understandable where those feelings came from. Finally, I think a lot of feminist scholars wants to label it as satire, even though Solanas wrote it with the intention of it being taken seriously, because it did put into words what a lot of women felt during that time and by labeling it as satire, it's kind of justified in a way. That coupled with the fact that Solanas was diagnosed with schizophrenia makes it easier for others to view her work in a different light than Solanas would view it herself, if that makes sense. These are just my own thoughts about the matter though!
@dimitriosdrossidis9633
@dimitriosdrossidis9633 2 жыл бұрын
I can see what you mean and don't necessarily disagree with it, but I do wonder, the longer time goes on and we move away from the time period, how would future generations be able to tell. For example, I didn't see the angle of taking Freud's and other men views into account until I saw this video. It's interesting for me, because I feel a lot of sympathy and pity for solanas, but at the end of the day she sadly lashed out at someone who didn't deserve anything. In her mind, Andy Warhol was more of a threat than he ever intended, but while I can think she can be somewhat 'excused', I find myself horrified, at the amount of people today, that use this book as a genuine foundation of their political goals with no care for males and even more horrifying, at least in my opinion, the people who use this as an example to accuse women collectively of the worst things and reinforce the unjust structures of society. I am in no Position to judge, but I do question, how much can be excused thanks to the label of satire and if that actually makes the book any good? For me personally, from what I could find, it's more of a relic of bygone times to which I simply can't relate without any explanation. Thank you for this video.

I also think calling her work “satirical” is a cop-out; the woman was mentally-ill, so it’s totally plausible she would write these hateful things in earnest. That said, your examples are uniquely bad. One of the most famous works of satire, Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” does in fact recommended eating children.

Would that end in the utopia that she predicts however? What advantage does sexual reproduction bestow that we'd lose? The dynamics of sexual reproduction lead to sexual dimorphism. I don't have much to add at this point, but I am incredulous that a non-reproductive species would be a perfect scenario.

Thank you. Me and my friend are just about to record a podcast episode on Gone Girl, and I specifically wanted to make the Solanas-SCUM connection (which is how I found your video). I'm a man, mired in heteronormativity, so I may be more the audience's target than the target audience. But when a hateful text surfaces - so long as it is radical like Solanas' - I think listening intently will yield much needed insight; in this case, insight into everything, under and over, what "love" captures in the sexual relation/difference (or even mere "oppression"). I also think that the only way to access these hidden things/structures in a relation is to listen to the hater, suspending (and suspecting) value-judgments, as befits (to my mind) any interaction with a radical gesture such as this. And Solanas is an exquisite hater with an exquisite gesture, much like Flynn's Amy. There's much to learn there and I fear few have even begun to scratch the surface (though I like Avital Ronell's take on it). Thanks again! PS I find most echo to my feelings and views on this "matter" in 2nd wave feminism (Irigaray...); just in case you were wondering where I am coming from (and why). S.

If she's good at writing men then I'm a god at writing woman. Want to review my fanfic I made when I was 12 years old little gal. 😂

So i was raised to not hate and all that. Never looked down on women. To know so many legitimately want to end my life or just seriously get rid of my sex because they dont understand history??? Ik who im gunna target and let out all lifes pain on...... Women dont realize we the same. All the same things women face men do too. Even with providing. Men are supposed to provide for women traditionally while women provide for the children. Seeing how headstrong women are about doing this to men and knowing the only readon the female sex isnt sex slaves is because some men dont make them...... Pretty strange enemy to make. Shouldn't threaten lives unless you want others to take it seriously. This is when i made my choice.

No she wasn't. While in the womb, only one of their X chromosomes are activated. The only affect the Y chromosome has is purely physical, while the X chromosome has both a physical and physical, effect on the person. The whole idea that the Y chromosome is malformed is complete nonsense. The closest someone could come to have a malformed chromosome is having something like fragile X syndrome.
