Disclaimers and Acknowledgements: - All assertions I make in this video are never made as definitive statement of absolute truth. My assertions are based on observable pattern and there is a margin for variation. - For the sake of this video, Blood Gulch, Coagulation, Hemorrhage and Bloodline are all referred to as "Blood Gulch" - For the sake of this video, Valhalla, Ragnarok and Viking are all referred to as "Valhalla" - I purposefully chose to only evaluate the patterns in on-foot gameplay for both maps, as vehicle gameplay exists independent of the most prominent flow controllers. - There is a defined and primary assertion that Valhalla and Blood Gulch are related maps. This narrative is based on the assertion that Valhalla is intended to be viewed as a direct reference of style of Blood Gulch. - I define North in Valhalla as pointed away from the lake side of the map for the sake of this video. It doesn't matter if this is true in-game, it was just to give East-West names to the towers. Please forgive any spelling or grammar errors that may appear in this video. this video makes zero sense and shows the author hasnt played CE before. there are gametypes that feature primarily the sniper rifle ONLY. if that doesnt count as a long range precision weapon idk what does.

This is why Blood Gulch on Reach is so awful, you'll spawn at a low point near very little cover and they'll just laser you from the towers.

It was a good map with AR starts, DMR/NR/SR pick ups. DMR starts are cancer on it.

@@Espartanica I played the original since 2002. It wasn't good then either. It never was. You have two shot magnums and instant kill snipers along with tanks that launch nukes. Newer maps have come along and do the exact same thing but better. Open sight lines and "hit scan" weapons is not a good design.

Personally, you brought up H2A but the version of gulch that suffers the most from the new weapon system is EASILY Reach, it's possibly the only map in the series where I'm instantly tempted to quit when I see it. To me it's that bad.

That's an interesting take. Reaches weapon sandbox is actually pretty unique. I dunno if I'd lump it in with 4 or 5 per say but I understand your sentiment. Reach may have pushed the envelope as far as it could go.

@@AscendHyperion Oh I did not mean sandbox, I meant getting crossmapped by everyone. Hemorrhage has little to no cover and the DMR is functionally a miniature sniper so it really isn't fun

I vaguely remember playing that as a teenager and being very frustrated that every attempt to splatter someone was met by dying to armor lock yet when I tried it armor lock was just suicide for me. And when people can just jetpack in top of the bases or cliffs, the movement funneling doesn't matter.

Thanks Background, i had to fight really hard to get BG in the game.. people said it was "too big" and "boring".. (my boss Doug Herring liked it though, so it was kept in.. it was a weird situation, i was working with FASA at the time i got moved over to Bungie, and after Halo was released I went back to FASA to do mech and Crimson Skies games and stayed there til around 2004.. then i spent 13 years with the Seahawks and Mariners.. i know, weird life, but a few years ago i got the itch to make games again) I wanted BG to also be a fun place to just hang out and goof around in, i was thinking before a big battle, people would enjoy just driving around doing fun physics stuff... And when Red vs Blue came out, hah, that was funny (Hey, wish me,luck, i applied to 343 for my old job making Halo mp maps a few weeks ago)

Both Blood Gulch and Valhalla are great maps. Both maps are similar in that they have they two base/box canyon style. I think both maps could work ok any Halo game. Also Blood Gulch hasn’t been absent from the past 3 games as it was in Reach (and in 2A).

I feel it wasn't balanced enough; there is basically 1/4-1/3 of the map that is terrible to traverse on foot, and vehicle play is kinda crap from all the anti-vehicle options, therefore a large part of the map (the teleporter zone) is an unuseable death-trap. At best you go through there to grab a bubble and brute shot and run to the next base - the only time it can be held reliably is when your team is dominating from the cliff-side base (red?).

@@Mis73rRand0m I feel like you can never make a good complete ''run'' around the map for vehicles. it's better for CTF when the first objective is to only get to the other side. The warthog has to decide most of the time to jump and expose itself, and the only way to drive is forward to the enemy. at which point you can be sniped, splasered or rocketed to your doom. there are barely any good places to make a U turn to recuperate from a fight.

@@Mis73rRand0m Replacing the laser with rockets can help out the vehicle combat tons. I've done that on customs and you get actual dog fights with the banshees and really dynamic air to ground engagements. I've always loved Valhalla, but switching laser to rockets (or something along those lines) makes for one of the best versions IMO.

Seems like Blood Gulch could be saved by adding fog, so that nobody could see across the map (or in matchmaking by restricting weapon choices), but it wouldn't be the same.

Blood Gulch should be in EVERY Halo game. Its one of the most iconic things about Halo. Hope they make a new version for Infinite. (if not we'll always forge it in.)

Great analysis and great video! I liked how you visuallly represented the fact that Valhalla is a mirrored layout and Blood Gulch is cyclical, including the sandbox elements.

I feel like leaving it up to Forgers to remake it is the way to go, because they'd almost definitely be forced to redesign it (maybe blending the attributes of Gulch and Valhalla) and the backlash would be INCREDIBLE. So they can either make the medium range precision weapons nerfed at range (which would be good for all-around balance honestly) or leave things the same and design the maps with more cover and routes. History makes it seem like they'll go the latter direction but you never know... Like the video man.

really really solid video. I know people love blood gutch, but honestly after a few games it usually gets on my nerves. The h2a version literally had me get off during the h2 flight it made me so annoyed lol

Yeah when I was editing I actually cut out my larger Bloodline section. It was good as an example but swelled up the run time more than needed.

I agree actually. CTF on Coagulation was pretty much the only map servers would play on H2 project Cartographer and it got really old fast. These were 30 minute games that would end when one side got 3 flag captures which almost NEVER happened because the map is so open that picking up the flag just immediately draws enemy fire from every corner of the map. And then the tanks were just unfair, unless you actually got to drive one in which case they were very fun.

Then you hurt vehicle gameplay. The idea of Blood Gulch is a clash of vehicles in the open centre while infantry skirt around the sides. Add too much cover in the centre and vehicles lose their dominant area. The absence of discussion on vehicles and the exclusive focus on infantry gameplay is a bit of a flaw in the video.

One thing you didn't mention was that Gulch+it's true successors were always the maps that shipped with the game that had every vehicle and weapon on the map, and a really good open corridor in the middle where the vehicles could fight. Sandtrap definitely filled this role better in Halo 3. I'd imagine the aesthetic change for Valhalla was very intentional too, Bungie knew they weren't making the same map again and knew fans would be upset if the red rock look of Gulch was used on a map that was not Gulch.

At their cores, Bloodgultch is a fish bowl and Valhalla is a high-mid-low map. They're definitely different, but it's sad to think they'd stop using a good map design they perfected years ago, just because Halo changed it's entire gun play design. It's because this argument in the video is accurate that I think it's also accurate to say Halo 4 gameplay fundamentally feels different like not a halo game anymore. Which is fine, but they gotta stop aping the name eventually, right? Every weapon is a sniper rifle in Halo reach onward. The guns all function extremely similarly. The earlier games problem is not that long range weapons under perform, it's that not every weapon is a long range weapon. They understand the concept of a mid range weapon. This also makes close range maps in newer games to feel like Call of Duty, with people zerging constantly. Changing the function of guns and the pace of Halo has changed the game. Is that bad, no. Probably not. But it really does suck that perfected designs have been tossed out to make games more homogeneous. Similar map designs, similar gun play, and similar pacing. If not identical.

Blood gulch only works as a map in Halo if the precision weapons have slower projectile speed and causes players to miss shots at long range. In Reach and beyond, all projectile weapons do not require leading shots and therefore ruin the map movement of the original blood gulch (and other large maps). Valhalla is now the preferred iteration because it provides cover from the laser accurate precision weapons, even if the map is the exact opposite of what the original intention of blood gulch was (the center of the map being the most vulnerable).

I don't see your point that Valhalla is "phasing out" Gulch. You used Halo 3, 4, and 5 as examples, but Halo Reach came out between 2 and 4, and MCC/Anniversary came out between 4 and 5. So it's actually been alternating releases, especially when you consider that Halo 5's version of Valhalla was NOT created by the game's developers, but rather is a very well designed forge map by a community member, that simply made its way into matchmaking. (Reach was also a Forge map, but was purposefully designed by Bungie, and released at launch, and only the bases, and wall were really forged in). So no, Valhalla was not the go to for the last 3 consecutive titles, rather we've been alternating between Gulch and Valhalla for the last 13 years. You also make the point of weapon range limitations, however not only is the problem the same on Valhalla as it is on Gulch, with any team controlling the midpoint on the map being capable of easily spawn-locking the enemy team due to the effective range of Halo 4 and 5's DMR, but Halo Reach's DMR and Halo 2 Anniversary's BR do NOT have the same range limitations as the original trilogy's weapons either, despite that Blood Gulch appeared and worked fine in both those games. Better even than Valhalla has in 4 and 5. So, in essence, I basically fundamentally disagree with your point. And believe we are just as likely to see Blood Gulch, as we are to see Valhalla in future titles.

Blood gulch did NOT work fine in reach. The DMRs not only deny advances past the teleporters, but they also single handly deny access to the mid feild. The rock pathways also easily allow for cross mapping, making so the only thing that can challenge a starter weapon is a power weapon (sniper). Hell, the DMR makes everything except the tanks irrelevant due purely to their range and ability to hit any vehicle from any angle that dares to try to cross mid field, and even then, tank survivability still isnt much from constant damage from every angle infront of you. Blood gulch will be added for nostalgia, sure, or made in forge, but the map is obsolete in everyway and the only reason vallhala stands a better chance is entirely due to the fact that its a much smaller map, meaning closing the gap on ranged weapons (both standard and power) is easier and line of sight blockers are much more prevalent.

Its no wonder why something never sat right with me with BG. But besides that, I gotta say your videos are really helping me appreciate the delicate balance between maps and game play that exists between each game, even if they don't always hit their mark. And it makes me appreciate the newer halo games even more, seeing as how they are, IMO, slightly better balanced than the original games despite all the flack they receive. Doesn't mean the original games weren't fun as hell and didn't bring enjoyment.

Honestly, I think most newer big team battle maps are trash when compared to blood gulch. Maps like melt down, vortex, and exile from halo 4 and many of the btb maps in halo 5 are so cluttered it's just infuriating. I always liked blood gulch because it was exactly what a btb map should be: large, with long, open sight lines, and plenty of room for vehicles.

Blood Gulch can be in any game as long there is not/are custom loadouts. And the player is given the AR/short range starts.

I agree. I get that precision Weapons line the DMR/BR/Carbine are cool, but when they become the utility Weapon, good at anything in 95% of engagments with few drawbacks, they rob the sandbox of experimentation. Why rush to get the power weapons when you effectively spawn with one in your pocket?

I actually HARD disagree with the conclusion that valhalla results in closer combat. Valhalla is so much more open. The end result is usually pinging shields and waiting behind cover all day with nothing actually getting done. There is no worse feeling than the Halo 3 br at range. God I hate valhalla. Blood gultch was so much better in every way.

Reach was the only title which closing distance wasn't viable on that map. As was stated in this video, BG keeps the flow so that you need to keep moving, often getting into close encounters. I don't share your hatred of Valhalla, but agree that Blood Gulch is just as good at close/mid range.

So THAT'S why I keep dying on Valhalla's east side by the giant wall. The entire east side is far too exposed for me to traverse to the point that I can be spotted from other sections of the map.

Haha since a VERY long time ago. The forge map selected for Halo 5 is called Viking. Has 2 versions for matchmaking. You'll observe the 2nd version is a lil different (cause they tried to account for many of the things I discuss in this video)

I never even realized they were supposed to be related. Most large halo maps are two bases in a contained area so if that's the similarity then it's basically meaningless. I liked blood gulch when playing CE but i think Valhalla is a better map. The reach version of gulch is absolutely awful with dmr starts.

Back in my freshmen year of highschool (2014-2015) a lot of kids had the PC port of CE on our laptops and we would play a lot. And every single match was Slayer or Team Slayer on Blood Gulch. it got to the point where I hated the map because no one wanted to play on any other map

Post-Infinite Launch: Fragmentation is unlike Valhalla and Blood Gulch although they share the same fundamental aesthetics. Fragmentation also has an overabundance of clutter and hard cover. The "No Man's Land" is essentially just the roads, and are very small segments. And yet with AR starts in BTB, there's really not much need for such restrictive sight lines. One idea: They could shorten that center structure and make it something people could stand on and jump down into from above. Same with the base structures, they could open up a hole to jump down into from the main platform.

Valhalla is my favorite map in all of multiplayer gaming. Though I do enjoy blood gulch, I believe Valhalla from Halo 3 is the perfect improvement.

Call of duty fans have their favorite OG maps that the Devs still add to the new games. 343 should do the same, add an unmolested version of blood gulch to all the halos in MCC and future halos

What really killed Blood Gulch, was the Spawn-killers.. It became unplayable. Where Valhalla had enough variability, that you could still avoid some of the spawn-killers. Blood Gulch also became boring, where you couldnt do much once one side was dominating. While Valhalla, again gave more variables that players could turn the tide of a match.

I've been playing since Halo CE and I honestly don't think I even knew Valhalla was supposed to be a remake of Blood Gultch. It makes sense now; I loved playing BG but never liked Valhalla. And you're right about Valhalla being unbalanced; the majority of the action happens near the downed pelican on Valhalla.

well then the solution is just to reduce the effective range of the sandbox quite honestly i enjoy the shorter range gameplay of the original games, having every weapon in in halo 5 be a sniper rifle made the game more cover sensitive in an environment that's really chaotic in terms of flow.

The solution is simple, modify it slightly to work better. Not a new map that's similar like Valhalla, just a slight adjustment of Blood Gulch itself that will work better with the current sandbox. Maybe modify the heightmap but keep the base geometry and the overall texture and atmosphere the same.

There was a time in Halo 4 when Ragnarok was chosen like 3/4 of the time in CTF because everyone voted for it. It was the most fun map for CTF for sure.

in halo 2, the scorpion could climb the wall behind the east base..can't do that in valhala, ergo coagulation is blood gultch at it's finest...

I honestly dislike Valhalla. It claims to be a big map but the combat is always on the hill and almost never reaches the bases. Also, no real caves, just a couple little tunnels

I played Halo 4 for the first time yesterday. After finishing the campaign :( in the time it takes to watch a single LotR extended edition movie, I moved to MP. I got Ragnarok. Honestly, I had not even a glimpse of an idea that this is supposed to be "blood gulch". So if this is supposed to be the descendant of blood gulch, to someone who has no knowledge of this, it really does not look like it at all. Original Sidewinder is much more of blood gulch, than these "new blood gulch" maps :D

Blood gulch was already a popular, very liked map in Halo CE, the appearance of the best halo machinima 'Red vs Blue' made it even more popular, and so the map was recreated on almost all halo games, its just the changes and the knockoffs that made it fall. Is that a good summary?

Even when playing CE Blood Gulch kinda gets ruined when you play with other players who are really good with the magnum or a grenade yeet and the cyclical pattern is eliminated in favor of constant cross-mapping. Hell, if your team has the better aim, taking the center with a spartan or two is advisable, especially if you drag a warthog out there for cover and firepower.

I love Blood Gulch in CE and hate Ragnarok in Halo 4. I think it's because in BG the middle is low and there are two hills on each side, each with a power weapon so each team gets one. On Rag one team takes the middle and dominates the other team by lasering vehicles of the other team.

While it was cute to play on in Halo CE. I honestly never cared for Blood Gulch or even Coagulation. Those little hills never weren't enough to deal with the huge sniper sight lines. Pinning enemies was a little too easy to do, trapping them inside their bases once one side got the upper hand. I used to shut down entire team by myself in Halo 2 if I got control of both the Sniper Rifle and Rocket Launcher in BTB matches.

I disagree because Valhalla assumes the same role in the map lineup that blood gulch did. Namely, a semi-symmetrical map that is mobile enough to play well in 5v5 team slayer, but big enough to accommodate each team having a banshee and a tank in big team. They both also have symmetrical forerunner bases for objective modes. Valhalla is a natural progression of blood gulch that removed a lot of blood gulch’s biggest issues, namely the size and tendency toward stalemates. Tl;dr, Valhalla is supposed to fill blood gulch’s spot in the map roster, but actually be fun.

what alot of fans and even devs tend to forget is that not every map needs every weapon, bloodgultch could have been in every halo game without issue it just needed weapon and sandbox thought for proper implementation

Bloodline and Hemorrhage both have the issue where the BR or DMR plus the sniper if the sniper is good, are awful because you'll just get shot as soon as you spawn in. Hemorrhage is a WAY better map with AR starts thats why when I play reach BTB on MCC I don't use precision starts because the DMR Starts destroy map flow.

Yes, Valhalla is objectivily better, there are more zones which you can travel in, without too many flanks, but it's still an open map. Despite that, I rather prefer Bloodgulch, just too many feelings there (and sniper wars and duels were better, more frenetic.)

Anyone that played on blood gulch would probably believe Valhalla to be based on blood gulch immediately after their first time playing on it, so the community stuck the term but I have no doubt the people who made the map had that intention while doing so. Valhalla was more of a replacement rather than a successor, and it did it perfectly. Similar 2 base layout featuring vehicles but with cover so that the center of the map is not just wasted space. And in terms of Valhalla design when talking about 2 base, 2 towers, I disagree on how you showed how player traffic would be dictated due to cover. Sure the west side is a tower, but I would also consider the center hill to be it's own tower, and the eastern "tower" to still function as a tower as you explained it due to the fact that the elevation differences still provide it with cover from the western tower. A lot of my memories of valhalla are using that eastern side of the map for flanking, because you have all that cover created by the center hill. This video has made me realize that blood gulch is worse than I thought it was, valhalla would be fun in any halo, blood gulch would not. At its core, blood gulch is a vehicle map, if I was having fun on blood gulch, 90% of the time it was in a warthog.

I think Halo 4 has the absolute worst version of Valhalla, not so much due to the spawning weapons but the power weapons. One player standing in the middle of the map with a Binary Rifle has line of sight to most player spawns and the capacity to kill them instantly with minimal effort.
