There were definitely fancier buildings in some viking villages. Especially the mead halls and jarl's longhouses. They weren't all rustic and utilitarian. As with most cultures, they revered expert craftsmen and decorators, and would worship their gods and tell stories through decorations. Every wall and pillar was carved and painted. They may not have all been rich, but you didn't have to be rich to use your hands to beautify your space. There were certain decorations that only the richest would have access to through trading, and yet the poor still had access to them through raiding. They took slaves as well, but it wasn't like other types of slavery, where regardless of your previous occupation you'd be forced into hard labor. Craftsmen and skilled laborers were given special accommodations and had a quicker path to citizenship, and often times would skip slavery altogether, as the vikings who took them would immediately free them and hire them instead. But considering even the kings and jarls worked their own land, even the slaves that got hard labor weren't typically mistreated, as they were seen as imported coworkers, not necessarily property. And when they were mistreated, they had the right to bring charges against their master at the lawspeaker. Honor was a big part of their culture and cruel slave masters were seen as dishonorable. People were even outlawed on occasion for mistreating their slaves. Outlaws were forced to live like vagabonds, and anyone caught giving aid or comfort to an outlaw would be outlawed as well. They weren't just violent, unkempt barbarians with bare walls and no sense of humor. That would be the Germans. 😅

@@KPRoof You're welcome. I haven't made a full village yet in Valheim, but I'm in the process of building a large mead hall. I've built several small single building solo player settlements, but my favorite so far is one I built in the Black Forest. While being killed over and over again by grey dwarves and trolls and having to rebuild and repair over and over again in the harsh rain until I figured out that I needed to roof every structure. I ended up putting a Trellebørg style ring around it. Raised earth on either side of a deep moat. Stakewall on the raised earth on the settlement side in a ring, three openings, West, South, and East, and I filled the moats with spike traps. I don't want to go into too much detail about the rest because it would just get tedious, but so far it's been my most secure and cozy settlement.

A very pretty little Scandinavian village. On the other hand, the fields would have been attached to the farmers' houses and not centralized (it's just a matter of being a pain in the ass).😒😒 Historically, their blacksmiths, due to lack of technique, forged poor quality steel and they sourced their supplies from the Frankish Empire for decades until the Emperor Charlemagne banned the export of weapons to the peoples under penalty of death. I watch other KZbinrs playing this game that just build something weird just to keep them out of the rain and somewhere to sleep. Yes there are other builders out thee that makes those ridiculously beautiful buildings. But why compare, yes watch them and learn new techniques. But don't compare. And last I am an Norwegian, coming from a viking nation. To some in here, when did vikings ever have horn on there helmets? Here in Norway we have 2 big Viking museums that I can think of One in Oslo that displays Viking ships and the one in Lofoten that has a replica longhouse.
