Please don't let our awful music track distract from the great things Jordan is doing at Valiant Trailers. When we made this video we had selected an ambient track for the transitions with no beat and no guitar. Unfortunately during the edit we forgot to change the placeholder music. Lesson learned, ALWAYS proof the video before uploading to KZbin because once it is up you can never go back. Again, Jordan and Valiant had no part in this edit, just a mistake by yours truly "Playing with Sticks."

@ReimerKeith4 жыл бұрын
There doesn't seem to be enough tongue weight. He lifts it up with one arm. Limited storage up front, so add a loaded fridge and kitchen pantry to the rear, and it could be even lighter.
@harrymills27704 жыл бұрын
Just keep in mind that the center of mass changes, depending on what you stick in the thing. Most people will end up loading theirs with a bunch of cargo for the travel part. I think I'd keep it mostly empty, because part of the appeal is being able to just pull over and grab some z's without any fuss or muss.
@mikemead23154 жыл бұрын
I really like the back door opening up and acting as an awning. A few teardrops are made to provide a little bit of cover when the back hatch is opened, but this one does it perfectly.
@PlayingwithSticks4 жыл бұрын
We completely agree. We haven't talked about it in any videos yet, but our galley door is probably the feature of our teardrop that drives us the most crazy. It is way too heavy, so small it doesn't protect us from the elements, and so high it makes putting a tent over it difficult. We often say we are going to put gas springs on ours, which would be really nice. But, we still haven't got around to it. If we were to build a teardrop or purchase one we would definitely create a pass through in the galley from interior to the exterior. There are so many times May and I wish we could just pass items to each other from the back to the inside. We use our galley more for storage than food prep. It would be so great to just quickly move those items from the galley to the bed when we hit camp. Back to your comment Mike. In person that back door is really large. Our family could definitely huddle together under it at night with chairs and be completely protected from the elements.
@mikemead23154 жыл бұрын
Playing with Sticks, Yes, agreed - a pass through! Good one!
@harrymills27704 жыл бұрын
This isn't strictly speaking a "teardrop." The ORIGINAL idea was a very small, light, aerodynamic camper trailer that could be towed by a passenger car. The shape was part of what made it (more) towable by vehicles not strictly built as tow vehicles. Installing an outdoor galley in the rear made great use of that rounded back. The square back, with either top hinges or bottom hinges (for a RAMP!), is standard cargo-trailer stuff. You might be surprised at all the cargo-trailer companies who'll custom-build a toy hauler for you to your specifications. These also make excellent toy haulers. Roll out your snowmobile, dirt bike(s), 4-wheeler and that space becomes your sleep area. A lot of people are turning small (and large!) cargo haulers into DIY campers and toy haulers. There's a huge market of 4x4 owners, who don't need something tiny (and un-insulated) like the standard teardrops (Vistabule, etc.), and want something that can go anywhere they can take their 4x4s, and, as so much of the market is from the high country, you're seeing more and more companies like the one featured in the videos, who insulate them for winter camping. Small as they are, and insulated as they are, you could probably just crack the roof vent, hang a lantern, and be plenty warm in one in the middle of winter. The "teardrop" basic idea of small, very basic, very effective camping trailer that's CHEAP has expanded hugely in the last decade or so. They're more affordable and more rugged than the standard camper trailers, and with the Timbren suspension, very rough-and-tumble, which is what a lot of hunters and trekkers want.

@PlayingwithSticks Жыл бұрын
As this was shot quite a while ago a lot has changed since then. AGM is still more affordable and performs better in extreme cold weather. However, since this video was made lithium has greatly went down in price with all the competition, and many of the good brands now have built in heating. So basically AGM is only a battery we recommend for price and cold weather performance. Other than that lithium beats it on every other front.

Before having children we used to do short tours throughout SE Asia. They are some of our fondest memories. Now, just waiting for the kids to get a little older so we can start touring around our home state. As for AC it would definitely be feasible with Jordan. Because Valiant is a smaller operation, every order is custom made. Basically if the client can dream it, they can build it. I will shoot him an email to see if he has ever priced an AC for his trailers. If he hasn't yet, I guarantee someone else will be asking about it soon. Thanks for the great question Dan. Nice trailer, esp with customization for those of us in hot, humid climates that would need A/C and a refrigerator. I am also wondering how well those wooden cabinets would hold up to extended use in a hot, humid climate. In addition, what about a solar panel on roof to recharge the batteries or an option to plug an external panel into the trailer? This would be a must for extended, off grid trips. Finally, can you do a better view of the inside? The demo model in the video seems to show that the inside is bare plywood.
@PlayingwithSticks3 жыл бұрын
Sorry, our lens was not wide enough to shoot inside. The inside was not plywood, but I can't remember what it was. Maybe a birch?

Thanks for the content. The suspension doesn't appear to be up to the task of off roading, noticed the trailer bouncing a fair bit whilst driving slowly.
@PlayingwithSticks3 жыл бұрын
Good eye. My guess is that the suspension is actually over built for the terrain. Valiant put some pretty heavy duty Timbren axles on their trailers. Most companies derate these axles because they’re typically too strong for the weight of these small campers. My guess is that when I shot this video Valiant was just getting started in the industry. At that point they probably didn’t realize these beefy axles need to have some give.
@cyclemoto87443 жыл бұрын
@@PlayingwithSticks I was wondering if the trailer may have been empty and the suspension “tuned” for maximum load capacity. In any case, that type of non-coil suspension isn’t what you need for a serious off road trailer.
@PlayingwithSticks3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Out of curiosity what would you suggest? This is industry standard for off-road trailers. Well, industry standard here in the states. They use a bit more robust suspension in Australia and South Africa. So I would be really interested to see what you have in mind.

@PlayingwithSticks4 жыл бұрын
As for the tires and wheels that is what Jordan loves to do. He has done many tire modifications. As for the propane there has been one or two comments about that as well. I am guessing Jordan will integrate that into their next design. Thanks for the feedback Mario.

I agree on the Tank hose. I could go alone where the fender abuts the body, downward toward the rear, then around up underneath. Look much better, sleeker, and stand out to be let tempting when unattended. WONDERFUL young man and trailer. Would get one in a heart beat if I had a place to store it out of the baking AZ sun/heat. A couple years of AZ heat likely bake out that sealing puddy, not sure. What I'm REALLY envious of is his garage. (But he can obviously right it off.). Wouldn't mind the drive up to AK to pick it up in the FJ, but now that we have COVID, we don't feel safe in motels (in our early 60's) on the drive up there. Anyway,... HUGE thanks to you and your young family for hosting this AND all your own vid's, including the gear reviews! Massively helpful getting us up to speed now that we are retired. (Also considering a used Cricket to customize.) Will be the way to go instead of traveling the world via closed in airplanes, motels etc. P.S. Very fun to watch your family grow and explore. P.S.S. Wondered if you have a vid on bear protection with a firearm (last resort only if needed)? Cheers.

very cool - do you make one with an AC and power line for parks with power (or generators)? In Texas the heat (not the cold) is the issue. Maybe solar mods as well/or instead... either way, I'm betting Covid is keeping you busy - campers are flying off lots.
@PlayingwithSticks4 жыл бұрын
They have made mutliple trailers now with AC. And I believe all come with the ability to plug into shore power. And yes, just heard Jordan had to hire another guy just to help him with the trailer builds as the demands are outpacing what he can put out. Great problem to have!

It comes in at 1400lbs dry weight. My Crosstrek has a max towing capacity of 1500. Wondering if its possible to get a skinny version or pay extra for carbon fiber to make it lighter.
@PlayingwithSticks4 жыл бұрын
Great question. When it comes to the carbon fiber, you would have to call Valiant. But, in terms of width I think Jordan could easily make that modification. A lot of the weight in Jordan's trailers also comes from the beefed up components. You could easily reduce the strength of some of the components of the trailer to save quite a lot of weight, and even reduced those components would still be much stronger than most of the trailers on the road.

$10k for base model, plus $2k for back galley. That’s an amazing price for the quality of this build. Put a big roof tent on top for $3k total and now you can easily sleep family of 5 (cuz that’s all I care about).

@PlayingwithSticks4 жыл бұрын
Good question Mike on the title. Valiant decided to call their "squaredrops" teardrops due to limited knowledge of potential buyers. When studying search questions online and polling friends, a majority of the people were familiar with the term teardrop, but not as familiar with the terms overland, expedition, squaredrop, etc. Way off subject, but related. I was reading an article a month or so again about how southern Indian food is marketed in America. The article was saying that southern Indian food although it is technically "stew" it is marketed as curry in the States. The article said that Westerners typically eat northern Indian cuisine and are familiar with their food which is often made up of curries. When companies first introduced southern Indian food to the West they advertised it as stew and few people purchased it because they didn't know what it was. They easily fixed this issue by calling it curry and it quickly became understandable to the western language. Who would have guessed I would be using curry vs stew in the comment section of this video! I will get back to you Mike on the total weight.
@PlayingwithSticks4 жыл бұрын
Hi again Mike. The weight is about 1200 lb for the base model and about 1500 for the model in the video.

YES!!! We had a very similar thought. I don't know if you have ever seen one of those older Apache hardside popup trailers with the inside/outside kitchen. I think they have this design on a few canvas popup trailers as well. Basically the kitchen is like a drawer that can be pushed out to be used outdoors or pulled back in for indoor cooking. My wife and I have often said if we were to build our next trailer it would definitely have that feature.
