CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The fates of Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) and the others are explained -- executed, all of them.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
At the absolute height of World War II, German generals hatch a daring plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler and effectively render the German war machine impotent. Directed by Bryan Singer, Valkyrie stars Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the real-life mastermind behind the elaborate plot known as Project Valkyrie: a plan to assassinate Hitler and overthrow his government from the inside. Stauffenberg has been a loyal soldier and an asset to the Reich for his entire military career, but after losing an eye, a hand, and three fingers in an Allied bombing, he reaches a breaking point. The destructive madness that his country is unleashing on the world has become too terrible for the colonel to stand silent. He joins the resistance movement -- a treasonous act, punishable by death -- and risks his life and the life of his family for the chance to change history. Comprised of high-ranking officials working in secret, the German Resistance has access to the inner workings of the government and military, putting them in the perfect position to dispatch the dictator and then use his own official contingency plan to seize power -

@@itz_aimann6605 No, Rommel was not publicly tried as he was such a popular figure in Germany. Instead he was contacted in private by the SS who told him that he could commit suicide and the people would be told that he died in an accident and would be given a hero's burial, or he could face a pointless trial and die a traitor. He chose the former.

I LOVE how the Colonel is actually giving advice to his superior officer on how to face death "look them in the eyes" and I REALLY LOVE how the Colonel's lieutenant stands in the way of him and the firing squad. The Colonel had everything to lose (beautiful wife, beautiful children) yet he knew it all meant nothing if he allowed a monster like Hitler to continue. Some things are a matter of duty.

This movie was criminally underrated, and not just among the Biopics or History or War genres, in general. The meticulous care and detail that went into every uniform, every weapon, every detail of set and background. Even the careful recreation of this scene according to the historical accounts of it was down to the detail (i.e. Werner von Haeften, the Lt. aide to Stauffenberg really did jump the line and shield Stauffenberg in a final act of defiance and show of loyalty). I mean when you get a free second look at the Wikipedia page for this movie and hover your mouse over the actors and their real life counterparts, some of them are uncanny, not just Tom. Without a doubt though, Bill Nighy stole this film, his performance as Olbricht was phenomenal. The critical reception of this film and it's lack of awards is just criminal.

That part when Stauffenberg's friend Lieutenant Haefte walks in front of him to take the bullets in order to give him a few more moments of life as a gesture of friendship, and loyalty is very touching. I don't know why, but it makes me think back to Joan Of Arc's execution where she was burned at the stake, and imagine one of her followers doing something like that. Imagine if right after they lit Joan's pyre, one of Joan's friends/followers suddenly walked up, and climbed onto it, choosing to burn with her so that she won't have to die alone...

Absolutely fantastic movie, and terribly underrated. It definetly didn't get the marketing attention nor the praise it deserved. They stayed so true to the characters and created a really dynamic and exciting movie from something that is basically a political movement, while staying true to the history. In the scene where the guy goes in front of the firing squad, I admit that at first I was like "oh come on, this is cheesy" but right after the movie I did my research, and it's actually something tht really happened, and so the "Long live sacred Germany" part.

Indeed, and while they'd be at perhaps they might also shed some light on the hundreds of thousands (more?) German civilians who did realise their mistake in ever supporting Hitler but couldn't do much about it because as it was too late to resist. And whose voices were never heard. It's one thing to sacrifice your own life for a cause you believe in, but quite another to have your family be deported too. It's where most normal people certainly draw the line. Add to that the horrors inflicted upon civilians by the advancing Red Army. That's a bad situation to be in and probably be enough cause for many a man today to fight on, regardless of politics. Why is everything always reduced to right and wrong? Life is never that simple. It's for reasons like this that history repeats itself, because we teach our children a lame, fairytale version of what really transpired.

@@andrewroberts7428 Honestly take a good hard look at the world and the history of the last 200 years. Germany has payed the price over and over again, they reacted in the most human way to their situation. There was no "good" and "evil" side in WW2. All sides were wrong and to blame in some way. Germany was the one country that was significantly changed for the better after the war though. So despite how the US and the allies fought Germany and decided they were the greatest evil, they've since became probably the best country in the world. Definitely not the strongest though. Just saddens me that the US continues to allow russia, the middle east, and China to exist. Nobody has the balls to do what's necessary for world peace.

This movie is so under appreciated. It has star power with actors such as Tom Cruise, Bill Nighy, Terence Stamp, Tom Wilkinson, who were all incredible. The music is incredibly moving. And for a Hollywood movie, it's historically accurate based on first-hand accounts, photos, newsreels, Gestapo and SS records, and talks with the actual families of the conspirators. It's a great story that has to be told. "If a soldier in a position of highest authority in such times sees his duties and tasks only within the limits of his military responsibilities, without consciousness of his higher responsibility to the whole people, then he shows a lack of greatness, a lack of comprehension of responsibility. Extraordinary times demand extraordinary actions." - Ludwig Beck

Much of the movie takes place in the offices of Bendlerblock which served as the offices for the military operations of the Third Reich's military command. The courtyard of Bendlerblock is where Colonel Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg and the other conspirators were executed. Some of the filming of the movie took place at the actual building. This building is now the Memorial to the German Resistance (German: Gedenkstätte Deutscher Widerstand). The statement in the final slide of the movie is from a plaque near the site of execution at the Memorial.

0:47, what a way to go. Not only will you be suffocating to death by hanging (which in itself is extremely painful), but the wire will also be cutting your throat, just compounding the agony.

@@benharrison3479 lmfao sir what. Germany is as strong and prosperous as ever. Strongest economy in all of Europe, one of the most respected countries in production and export, extremely high standard of living, highly functioning social safety net and employment etc etc. You're just mad that 10% of the population is non-white lmfao and for that you say their "national sovereignty" is being challenged?

Imagine how awkward it was, when Cruise was invited to a german awards show, televised nationally, and he stated "Long live sacred Germany" at the end of his acceptance speech. The cameras showing the crowd were capturing a lot of "WTF!?" faces.

Phrases like that are routinely co-opted by right wing parties like AfD for their own gain. The fact that Cruise is himself part of a massive cult of personality in Scientology doesn't help
