One notable guy was "spared": Fabian von Schlabrendorff, a former lawyer whose "trial" was scheduled for 3 February 1945. However, thanks to a bombing raid-induced dislodging of a ceiling beam revoking Judge Roland Freisler's breathing license, and also conveniently destroying his criminal record as well, Schlabrendorff dodged execution by the skin of his teeth and was later rescued by the Allies. After the war, he would go on to become a judge.

Fromm knew that their subordinates were plotting to kill Hitler, but he did not order their arrest. He was waiting for the events to unfold so he could decide which side he would jump in. So the conspirators were never entirely sure whether Fromm would join them. When Fromm learned that Hitler was still alive, he decided not to join the conspirators. If Hitler was killed, Fromm would probably would had join the conspirators. In fact, when Fromm was arrested, he actually apologized to one of conspirators explaining that he could not join them because he believed that Hitler was still alive and they were making a mistake (this dialogue is not shown on the movie, I read it in a book about the plot).

Fromm's tangential involvement in the coup was similar to that of Rommel, essentially knowing of the plan and taking no action to stop it. Rommel was popular with the German people and he had also suffered a serious head wound right after D-Day. With the assurance of his family being provided for, he accepted his fate and did not try to conceal his actions (or inactions) the way Fromm did.
@mxkmxk72963 жыл бұрын
I don't think that Fromm even knew what was the plan, he only knew that they were planning something against Hitler.

Then Hitler hypocritically gives Rommel a state funeral. If Rommel had seen out the war I highly doubt he wouldn't have been charged with any war crimes etc. Out of all the senior Generals his record was near clean throughout the war..
@Kontorotsui Жыл бұрын
Not quite. Fromm was on active duty and there was his (fake) signature on the Valkyrie order. Rommel was convalescent and never took part to the conspiracy.
@bobbyricigliano2799 Жыл бұрын
@@Kontorotsui It has been a few years since I read Shirer's book, so I did not recall that Fromm's signature was forged on Valkyrie. Is the scene in the film accurate? Did Fromm stand by and watch Stauffenberg hand Hitler a forged document to sign? He was in the room. The recent film about Rommel goes into detail about his passive awareness of the plot before being wounded. That would at least signal an act of omission that further enabled Valkyrie to continue. He received a "better death" than the active conspirators, but that seems to have been given primarily to avoid embarrassing Hitler rather than a recognition of Rommel's long service.
@Kontorotsui Жыл бұрын
@@bobbyricigliano2799 About Rommel you're right, the chance to quietly suicide having his family spared was given mostly because having a national hero like Rommel be accused of treason and be part of the plot would generate a massive backlash. About Fromm, I didn't mean that moment, with Hitler. I mean when the plotters sprang the coup and Fromm refused to sign the order to mobilize the Reserve Army, they put his fake signature on the Valkyrie order. This is show in the movie (see clip 8/11) and is historically confirmed, also Wikipedia lists that on the page about Fromm.
@enterpriser40292 жыл бұрын
This scene is surprisingly accurate from a historical perspective. Fromm did refer to Stauffenberg as “the colonel-whose-name-I-will-not-mention” just like in this scene. There are a few minor differences though. For example, Stauffenberg pleaded to let the others go since it was his full responsibility, but he was ignored by Fromm. Also Stauffenberg was no longer using his eye patch. When Fromm asked whether anyone would want to write a letter, Olbritch responded that we wanted to write a letter to his wife, and Fromm allowed him to do so. Also when Beck held the gun he did say “I am thinking about past times”; however, Fromm interrupted him screaming “JUST DO IT” since he knew troops loyal to Hitler were about to arrive and he did not have much time. Beck shot himself but he only injured himself and was still alive. He tried a second time but was still alive. Then Fromm asked an officer to finish him off who refused to do so ordering a lower ranking militar to finish Beck.

Why does Thomas Kretschmann always get type casted into his historical roles dealing with the Third Reich? Does he he just have that “soldierly” and “from another era” vibe about him?
@liamweaver29443 жыл бұрын
I guess so. Either way, he does a damn good job.

Staffenberg was right none of the plotters were soared and none of those who knew of it, but weren’t involved like Rommel wouldn’t be spared death either.

General fromm did a great favor for the conspirator, fromm let the conspirator died with dignity rather than face the ss and people court. As ww2 came to an end, hitler became completely mad, he lash out at everyone, he kill people for the smallest mistake.
@mxkmxk72963 жыл бұрын
Yes for example one of the plotters General Hopner had the chance to commit suicide, but he decided to face the people court. He later regretted this decision based on the torture and humiliation he had to go through.

On 12 March 1945, Fromm was executed at the Brandenburg-Görden Prison by firing squad as part of the post-conspiracy purge. His last words before the firing squad were reported to be "I die, because it was ordered. I had always wanted only the best for Germany".

Some historians have especulated that Fromm might have done this to spare his subordinates from the Gestapo torture. In fact, one of the conspirators called Erich Hoepner was given the chance to commit suicide, but he preferred to go through the trial. Afterwards he regretted his decision after being brutally tortured in prison before his execution.
@Whatatwist2009 Жыл бұрын
The general was giving them the honor and mercy of a military death by firing squad. He knew the SS would have tortured them and hung them instead of death by firing squad. It was a small mercy but the only one he could afford to give them.
@ikaikaxkeahi5 жыл бұрын
At the same time i have a feeling General Fromm wanted hitler dead as well but was just so fearful of the consequences if the plan didnt follow through. Also he didnt want them handed over alive maybe because he didnt want them to go through torture? Plus too he mustve known he wouldve gotten in huge trouble and probably killed because he disobeyed hitlers orders to take them in alive. Maybe it was his way to show them his respects for their attempt. But who knows, just my theory.

Agreed - the Prussian military code of honor / respect often stood firm in cases like this. The odds of this guy clipping Fromm were remote >considering the major, Fromm's adjutants, and the outside guards were all well armed and looking right at the guy. Also, I vaguely remember something about the German Walther models -- I believe if you tried to remove magazine after cocking, it somehow prevented the gun from firing the chambered round, similar to some gun features today.
