Vallejo Metal Color paint test and comparison (Mecha, Tamiya, AK Xtreme Metal) with recommendations

I test many (not all unfortunately) of the Vallejo Metal Color paints and compare with some Vallejo Mecha Color, Tamiya , and an AK Interactive Xtreme Metal too for comparison and see which is the best match for a car disc brake.

Great informative video! I was up in the air about getting a few of the metallic colors. Defiantly like the dull aluminum and jet exhaust the best!

Indeed VMC do looks better on a gloss black primer instead of a matt one. Actually Vallejo sells a gloss black primer as part of the VMC range. Another big advantage, for me, of the VMC is that they also work very well with brush including with sze 0 or smaller, they are not sticky and have a reasonable drying time. On the negative side the range includes too many similar tones and lacks a more yellow orange gold. However they are water based and mix well with inks to alter the base color

In my opinion Green Stuff World "Pure Metal Pigments" and "Alclad II" are the best metallic paints.

do u have another test wheere u use black gloss as base? cos i was wondering if tamiya chrome silver will reflect on gloss black

Hi. I don’t right now. I think it would be an improvement over a non gloss base but I don’t think it would reflect as much as some of the other paints like Mr. Color or even Tamiya lacquer. I can do a test for you in the near future if you still want to know.

Hi, thanks for the incredibly kind comment 😊. For the Vallejo Metal Colors and the AK Xtreme Metal, they are already pre-thinned for airbrushing. Tamiya is very thinner-friendly so you can use 1:1 thinner or even 1:2 pant:thinner. Good luck.

Hi, the Vallejo Metal Color and the AK do not need thinning when airbrushing. The Tamiyas do.

I think the Chrome must always lay over gloss black, no exceptions.

@@weekendhobbyist all of these look 1000 times better over a gloss black. Best gloss black in my opinion and testing has been tamiya acrylic gloss black. Thats just me. That is just what I did on kit and got the results I was after.
