Love this video. I used to hate taking public trans. Nothing wrong with it, per se, it's just I wanted my wheels, my timing, my music, etc. A bit spoiled at the time maybe, lol. But now that I've been out of the country for over a year, I really appreciate videos like this, reminding me of home and how much I love Phoenix. I'll be coming back this year, 2016, and will be so happy to take the lightrail to show my new husband all around Phoenix! Thanks for recording this, it brings so many nostalgic feelings for me. Nice work! :)

I like the way the cars glide smoothly and with very little noise. Here in Los Angeles the MTA uses high floor high platform rail cars that are noisy and the rides are a bit rough.

I lived in Metro Phoenix in the 90's and it never occurred to me not to have a car. Everything was so spread out but this video makes me pine for a solid visit soon to see how its grown and changed. I'd love to travel this and see the city. I'd still get a rental car since driving off the grid is a must.

wow, this runs fast for being in the center median of a road. VTA restricts LRT to 35 in unfenced areas and 45 in fenced, however those fenced spots are usually between two blocks and with the lack of a reliable signal priority system it usually stops, sometimes for a whole minute or two at some intersections

Not to discourage the riders, or the train system, as I'm the biggest proponent of using mass transit. But once you leave the downtown ASU campus and airport area, I really wonder where these folks are headed bc its MUCH too hot to walk around, plus this isn't a walkable city to begin with. Are they parked nearby, then again, that would sort of ruin the benefit of taking the train if you still had to have a car to bridge the gap. I lived in PHX for 2 years and never once considered the light rail bc things are just too spread out for it to be effective. I live in Seattle now where you can do without the car. But i applaud light rail riders in PHX anyhow for getting away from the car. P.S. I love these videos you do. Thanks!

Victoria Salek Downtown Phoenix is not a major destination the way downtown Portland or Seattle is downtown Phoenix is More of a place to go to work in
@enticingmay4357 жыл бұрын
Victoria Salek Because the city is such an urban sprawl without adequate public transports. Yes, we have a light rail line but it only runs through the center of the city where no one actually lives. It doesn’t connect people to their work so traveling by car is much more efficient (and the only option in most cases). Everything is so far away from each other that walking would be a huge waste of time. It’s just the culture here. People drive EVERYWHERE, even if it is within walking distance. People don’t interact with each other, driving their cars waiting in traffic. Plus it is not very pleasant walking in Central Phoenix. Parts of it feels like a third world country with a crime rate to match. I’m so ready to leave this place lol

This was shot during the middle of the summer and not too many people brave the middle of the afternoon heat. Between mid September and mid May, much more people are walking around.

I have a to me a dumb question about this what's it like to ride a light rail train? Because I live in Chicago and we unfortunately don't have any light rail services here so I have been curious about the ride and experience riding it because of my huge love of trains.
@MJofLakelandX10 жыл бұрын
It's not a dumb question. No questions are dumb unless it's rhetorical :). Light rail trains feel like articulated-buses on turns and curves, but a little more stiffer and windy. It has a flexible feel in-contrast to "subway" -style cars, which is a bit more loose, glide friendly. Light rail carriages are low enough to merely eliminate air from passing under, which causes it's stiff feel, while subway carriages is sitting around two-feet off the floor (or track's foundation) leading to the carriage to sway freely as more air shoots under - especially on box-faced carriages.

I live in Phoenix and this city has a great potential to have a decent and efficient public transit system due to it being on a straight grid. Unfortunately the right-wing nature of the government does not want this and thus the transit system is not very efficient. When I moved here 6 months ago I had to use public transit but now drive. Driving is the only way to get around here. The buses basically stop running at 10 pm from east to west and as early as 8 pm from north to south. I had often been forced to call a green cab (those discount cabs) because I missed the last bus. It's obvious that there are bribes and kickbacks involved here with the taxis not wanting to lose business to late-running buses. The only area where the buses are a little better is in Tempe where they can run as late as midnight. Also taking public transit at night is pretty dangerous with Phoenix's large indigent population (ie ex-cons, drug addicts, troubled youth, dealers, violent criminals, homeless people) roaming the streets. I have seen things here that would make New York City's 1980s crack epidemic seem like a cakewalk. On the plus side the bus drivers are very friendly here.
@ThePumpin18 жыл бұрын
+coupleofbeers31 That's why you have to start voting for legislators who are pro-transit. Things don't change when you sit on the sidelines.
@coupleofbeers317 жыл бұрын
Yeah true. However the US as a whole is a country where cities and towns are built around cars. That's never going to change. The only way that would change is if we ran out of fossil fuels. Then we'd be forced to just walk or take public transit that is powered by electricity. Our cities were almost all built around the automobile since we are such a young country. Older cities like London and Mexico City were built before the car was invented and thus you can walk everywhere and never need a car. I lived in NY for a while and loved not having to have a car. Oh well.
@michaelangelowalter88966 жыл бұрын
coupleofbeers31 America once had a very extensive public transportation system... Then the automobile industry took over with cars and buses (that no one rides). Its a shame really especially in the western regions that are ripe with potential due to them being fairly young and developing cities. But no one votes so rip U.S public transport
@RoadDawgLife6 жыл бұрын
@@michaelangelowalter8896 A city or two have opened their eyes to the necessity of a good public transit system. Los Angeles is one such city. LA's system is now one of the best on the west coast. It wasn't always like that.

Transit police to check for valid fares (tickets) at random stops throughout the line. Fines range from $50- $500. If it is your first time, you will be booted off. If you are a repeat offender, you will get fined. The worst thing I have seen on the light rail is drunk people being stupid.
