Guys we have been to Vally of Fire 3 times. Every time its been windy. Just like what you went through. we have been through there in December and Febuary and March in different years. Its best to bring soup or cook in your camper. The best scenery of black rock {lava} I have ever seen. The only thing is the rattlesnakes. I've never seen one at these times. Too cold for them. Now if you found one and woke it up you wouldn't have any fun. But at this time of year they are hibernating. Such an amazing place. I think the wind is like this because of the black rock heating the cooler air around this place. So glad you got to see it. We will be through there next year. Have a fun time in Arizona. Safe travels .

The first pronunciation of Capitan and Carizozo were correct. And you're right, the drive from Roswell to Carizozo is under-rated. If you weren't towing I'd suggest the route through the mountains past Ruidoso, real pretty through there.

A suggestion for something to make--a wind-break out of aluminum sheets that can be set up to shield the wind off of a grill, a portable fence. The only place in the US that I know that has an active lava flow is on the Island of Hawaii in Hawaii.

If you are heading towards the grand canyon definitely swing by Lake Powell region. There is a lot of great hiking and off beat things to see up there this time of the year.

I live in Benson Arizona and would take you out to dinner if you are passing through. Also, they have Kartchner Caverns south of Benson which are very beautiful. Mammoth Cave is just east of Tucson. Then of course the Grand Canyon and many beautiful places up north. Arizona is probably a state where you would need at least a week or two to visit everything.

A TV prospector did a show where in the desert southwest where he knew of a place where you could climb down underneath the lava cap. The place where he went down there was an old stream bed. He was picking up gold nuggets as big as the end of his thumb. That lava flowed before man ever walked on the earth.

Looking like you are heading west. I'm suggesting Sedona, Grand canyon, Lees ferry, and Willow beach in AZ. Lake mead/Hoover dam , Valley of fire state park, Lost wages/Vegas, and death Valley in NV, California would take months to explore, but the Sierra mountain range is awesome! Thanks for sharing your adventure.

Unfortunately they left before the April site date, next is in October. To see all the sights in southern New Mexico you need a mouth or two, lots to see and experience here. They missed Sitting Bull Falls near Carlsbad.

Always keep a tarp or two and some rope/bungees in your camper to string up around the table area when it gets too windy.

The temperatures may be too cold for the rattlesnakes considering they are warm blooded and they are still in their dens, here in eastern Washington I would see the rattlesnakes out and about when the ambient and ground temperatures hits the 70's and 80's.

Ok guys I’m gonna give the what the sign really says. Here’s how I pronounce it, ” Malpais Nature Trail” well at least I can spell it right. Kidding aside, those are great Videos and stills. I really feel like I’m there. Looks like a lot of fun.

Malpais. Mowl-pie-EESE. Spanish for “bad land” and the standard name for exposed lava flows in the Southwest.

I always carry a number of cheap tarps various sizes and some large zip ties and hanks of rope. Then I can place the tarps as windbreaks so I can grill, cover up my firewood or whatever else may pop up needing a tarp.
