There's an old novel from 1935 called, Tortilla Flats by John Steinbeck, it was set in Monterey, Califas, it's about themes of friendship, hedonism, and the struggles of the paisano community, showcasing their carefree lifestyle despite poverty after WW1. Tortilla Flats is the novel one of the Mendoza brothers (the Original Founders, triple OGs) read, and he decided to name their varrio after the novel in the early 1960s, so in Old English, a Mendoza wrote a placa up on the wall, "TORTILLA FLATS". There's also a 1942 Tortilla Flats movie based off the novel. Back then, the home's roof was flat, and I believe "flat" was a term back in the early to mid-20th century to describe a neighborhood or housing areas, kinda like how today you might be familiar with "PJs" or "projects" to describe the public housing buildings, usually grimy and crime ridden. Tortilla was what they referred to Mexicans, so Tortilla Flats was a nickname for an impoverished Mexican barrio. That's some cletcha, some real historia right there. Their varrio's name is pretty hard if you think about it and know the actual history behind the varrio's name.

I used to be a dope fiend criminal. Back in maybe 2011 I was deep in compton for a week, white boy, w/permission to burn all kinds of connects. That was the only time I was paranoid to walk out of the hood to get on the bus, so thankfully I had some hood rat pick me up. I've been deep in some crazy hoods where shit was gonna hit the fan, but for some reason that time, probably mainly cause i didn't know how to get out of the hood to the train station or bus, made it hectic.
