Wow, how about that, I've not seen one of those in ages.. We used to have one of those. That certainly brings back memories especially going to the little local hardware shop to buy Paraffin by the gallon..

Well, that's a nice wholesome and relaxing video. Thanks for taking the effort to film, edit, and upload it. I've personally never been a big fan of the paraffin "Box heaters" where you need to remove the chimney to get the font (Tank) out. it encourages people to refill it with the font in place rather than having to remove a hot chimney, and from that it it's only a small extra short cut for folks to start filling it while it's lit. This isn't a particularly safe thing to do. On the plus side though, the box heaters are pretty safe devices if you use them as per the instructions, and although not 100% "Child safe, they're safer than exposed chimney models if kids/pets are about...... Just be sure to always have at least one carbon monoxide detector/alarm in the room with them though. Personally, I prefer the more "Industrial" style of the earlier heaters, like my Aladdin Blue Flame, or (While not strictly a heater) the compact super cuteness of my little Valor "Minor 64" boiling stove. The Minor 64 can boil a kettle or fry some eggs happily enough, but it can also easily keep something like a living room warm for around 7 hours straight on it's dinky little 2 pint font. That window isn't plastic. it's actually a mineral called Mica. It forms naturally in layers like slate, and can be split into thin transparent flexible (and importantly) Heat resistant, sheets. It's a material I've only got a basic knowledge of, but it's really crazy to think something with these properties occurs naturally. The reason you want a solid blue flame on these is because the orange bits of the flame indicates that there was more fuel than oxygen, so you're getting incomplete combustion. This means it's kicking more carbon monoxide/dioxide, and vaporised hydrocarbons (None of which are particularly good for you) into the room. In theory, the lowest blue flame SHOULD be the safest, but they're still pretty clean right up until just before you start seeing constant red or orange spikes in the flame crown. A sort of very faint red halo all around the top of the flame is about perfect for heat vs undesirable by-products. Above that and the amount of nasties that blue flame paraffin heaters kick out goes up dramatically, and the amount of extra ventilation needed to be safe negates any extra heat you'd get from the bigger flame. It's nice to actually see one of these being used though. Too many paraffin heaters were relegated to the back of garages, sheds, or into greenhouses when reliable gas or electric central heating became the norm. They then got damp, got rusty, then eventually got left out for the bin men to take away. With all the current talk of rolling blackouts here in the UK, I'm guessing a fair few people are suddenly regretting letting their old paraffin heaters go that way.

The window in the chimney is made from mica, a natural silicate mineral that was cleaved into a thin sheet.

I'm so pleased I came across this video. I've seen the Valor heater in the background in some of your other videos and wondered if you had featured it. I have four, no, five Valor 207 heaters. I grew up with heaters like yours until we got central heating in the early 1980s, and my Grandma and Grandad had a 207 in their bathroom until the end. Like you, lighting them up and the smell of the burn is strangely comforting and nostalgic. My heaters live in the garage but have done us well in the past when we have had gas boiler breakdowns. The cylindrical 207 model that I have has the same wick, tank and filler guage as yours, but only the later ones have the automatic cut out flap linked to a sprung lever in the base.

It's nice to see someone else take an interest and look at some ordinary items from the British manufacturing past. I am a bit of a collector of ordinary things that perhaps most people would overlook. I'm clearly not the only collector of paraffin heaters! Perhaps if you don't feel like doing a car video you can have a look at something else from the past that most wouldn't care about?

Hi if you use UN1223 C1 Premium Paraffin BS2869 ClassC1 it's great no smell. I have been using paraffin heaters from 2021. I now cook with paraffin as well and lamps. Just have a carbon monoxide alarm. and vents open on your windows.

Liked your Valor video, brought back some memories for me to. We had 2, the fore-runner of your one and a more squat convector style one. One of them would make a sort of echoey plopping sound, I think it was the convector one. I love your sense of humour to, especially Smudge's comments...You and Lyndon have some nice classics between you... Take care, Jon B.

I have just purchased on like yours! Is it the MK2? I've since remembered it's the viceroy MK2 that my nan had 🥰
@davetspiritpr68343 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex I have found the paperwork for the Valor viceroy it doesn't say anything about it being a mk 2 just a Viceroy L150 oil heater and a list of service agents and hand book. There is also a round metal disk with Valor cleaner for Wick stamped on it and a 2 piece bracket to fix it to the wall if required and the date of 1974 I think I will give it a bit of a clean now as it's in quite good condition ☢️
