Lamentable.
@L2thelastdwarf6 жыл бұрын

Valparaiso, unfortunately, gets sold as a "must see", "cultural" destination. I wouldnt say tourists "flock" there because of its "charm", "culture" or anything at all really. Very few tourists go there knowing anything about the city, most just go there because its relatively close to Santiago and expect nice beaches in the summer time, not knowing that neighbouring Vina del Mar is actually where they wanna go (for beaches). I found Valpo to be a very ran down city, where its people do very little to keep it clean, are actually some of the unfriendliest in the country and it can be a little (or a lot) unsafe for MOST tourists. I lived and worked there for just a bit under a year, 5 years total in Chile, and I dont get why everything you read or see online about this city tells a whole different story from whats actually seen in person. I think its a really crazy city, very small and theres not much to do, theres hardly any work, things are expensive, people are very rude and unfriendly, they piss and go number 2 on the streets, there are a million and one stray dogs, garbage everywhere and the food sucks. To me and most of the tourists/foreigners I met there, that was the impression....BUT it can be a lot of fun if you know how to carry yourself and dont act like the typical douchy tourist. Valpo is a special city, with a strange sense of identity, there isnt a specific 'culture' that ties it all together, just few customs and traditions. Its people love it and hate it at the same time. They dont want to live there but they wouldnt live anywhere else for any reason. They want better, but they arent open to any type of change whatsoever. Businesses dont last, most people dont go back, almost everyone that visists gets robbed at least once...thats the real Valpo....so i dont get this whole "Valpo is a magical city, full of culture and rich in traditions and positivity and good this and that". Valpo sucks for the ppl that live there, it smells bad, things dont work properly, its dirty and theres not a whole lot to do....BUT thats what makes it interesting. There is lots of HISTORY, and lots of influences from all corners of the world and thats what makes it UNIQUE. Valpo disappoints if you expect it to be what people tell you, but it makes a hell of a destination if you go there with an open mind and live every experience to the fullest and learn from everything you see...the views, the hills, the bay, the sounds i would say, not the people and not the "culture"...Valpo is literally what you make it, not what people tell you it is....

I don't know if you know this, but Valparaiso was the place where a war between Chile and USA was almost triggered, it happened when the relationships between the two nations were already bad thanks to the political involvement of the USA in the civil war in Chile. The incident is known as the Baltimore Crisis. What happened was that when the USS Baltimore docked in Valparaiso in 1891, the crew of the Baltimore went for some drinks at a Bar called True Blue, they got very drunk at the bar and started to cause trouble and even spat on a picture of Arturo Prat(Which is a national hero who died in battle in the Pacific War). As a result, a mob of Chileans started a fight with the sailors killing 2 of them and injuring other 20 sailors. This caused an uproar in the USA because the Chilean government didn't want to apologize or pay compensations for the incident, the US firmly believed that this was a premeditated attack and they deemed the Chilean government responsible for not protecting the sailors. In addition to this, Argentina offered their help to the USA to invade Chile. In the end, Chile had to pay a compensation and offer their apologies to the USA government in order to prevent a war against Argentina and the USA.

@L2thelastdwarf6 жыл бұрын

Hi Jon, I really liked the intro to this video. I look to your videos for information about Chile. There just aren't a lot of people featuring this country. Some thoughts. I think you could have made this video 30 minutes and done more of a tour style video. Maybe a top 10 things of Valpo? Museums, landmarks, industries, etc. Sometimes the background of your video is washed out by the brightness. I don't know how videographers address this but I'm guessing it's challenging. Thank you for the work you do promoting the great things about Chile!

Saludos.

You should check the music and nightlife of Valparaíso. You won't regret. I know you have a child, but is something that you have to do in Chile! Have a nice day!

I think today you try to put many information about Valparaíso in 1 video. It is a nice video indeed, which I enjoyed . So from this video I can do many videos to talk much much deeper about each topic: (1) Vineyards, (2) Street-Graffity, (3) Street-Craft, (4) Valparaíso-Fireman´s History, (5) Pablo Neruda´s Home Sebastiana, (6) Pablo Neruda´s Home Isla Negra, (7) Funiculars, (8) Cafés & Restaurants, (9) B&B, Small Hotels, (10) Seaside.

Absolutely Jaime! It's hard when I only have a couple of days in one location and make one video by myself but I do love the idea!

Hello Jon, GREAT video as always, it looked like a massive challenge to be made and indeed you passed the test with flying colours. Man I wished your videos could be seen in airports or airplanes all over the world! everyone would desire to come to Chile! I really think our goverment should hire you to make videos of EVERY place of Chile and show them all over the world, THAT would be money well spent. Now, I have some thoughts about certains things that I personally would make differently, not that I don't LOVE your videos, it's just that one always can learn something from a different point of view: 1) I think the video would look more professional without the still images and text, they are funny of course (I really liked that Bilbo Baggins "seal of approval" LOL) but this is just my opinion. 2) Inside the church, you looked down maybe to read some historical date when you where talking, this is just nitpicking but I'd try not to do that (remember, just my thought) 3) I loved the sunlight on camera in some scenes, maybe this is something to avoid when doing outside shoots but I loved it, it reminded me those hot summer afternoons here in central Chile. Well I wanted to give you some feedback instead of always praise your work, what you do is incredible but there's always room to improve, I hope you find useful my "two cents" but always remember that this is YOUR work and we love it. Before I make this "TL;DR" I sign off, best regards dear Jon and keep up the awesome work!
