That the right way learned that from my father 35 year ago

I learned this many years ago, every time I tried to adjust valves at top dead center I would end up with too much valve lash on some valves and too tight on other valves. I had an older mechanic told me to do it your way! And I’ve never had a problem since! ICEO LEARN IT AND USE IT!I never knew the name of this procedure but now I do!

Glad you finally got it figured out and many still do it the harder and less accurate way! lol

I use the firing order method. Ford 351 firing order 13726548. It's called splitting the firing order. 1372 rock ,intake closing,exh opening. 6548 adjust. So rock #1, adjust # 6, turn engine, rock #3,adj # 5.After doing the first four cylinders, reverse the second four cylinders to top. 6548 rock 1372 adjust. This is supposed to back side of cam lobe on cylinders being adjusted. I was taught this over 50 years ago. Method works on all engines. ( not sure about 3 or 5 cylinder engines) Chevy, 18436572. 1843 rock. 6572 rock 6572 adj. 1843 adjust.

This works until you start running extreme lifts, duration, and overlap camshafts.
@benalamedaracing2765 Жыл бұрын
Takes too long and when you have an aggressive cam lift and duration it can spell trouble. I just posted another video yesterday about this very thing...

Looking good Ben, I do it that way too, I have had a balancer marked too in 90 degree increments. This is easy, no looking to line up things. Thanks

Another excellent video Ben. I secure poly locks exactly the same way as you do, and never have a problem. I've seen people struggle with valve adjustment on so many occasions, but the basic principles never change. Several years ago I was working for a company that serviced heavy diesel equipment. Some of their engines had done over 8000 hrs and never had a valve adjustment done on them, until I joined the company. Initial valve set was meant to be at 250 hrs, and then every 1000hr service. As I was the old guy on the team, all of the younger guy's were rotated through jobs with me to teach them how to do the valve adjustments. To be fair, a lot of the motors had very specific procedures that had to be followed, but it wasn't that hard if you understood the basics. Looking forward to your next video. Regards Greg

This was a very well done video. I came back and watched it again and this video explains with visual adds better then any video I've seen. I've tried to adjust on compression and I'm always 2nd guessing myself lol.

I have sbc iron black chevy stock car heads iron, with cam a intake duration at .50 - 260, exhaust at duration .50 - 272 valve lash hot intake .022 exhaust Exhaust .024 man getting a lot mix info on setting this up cold. I was told cold 18/20 filler gauge and then buy another guy .026/.028 cold settings.
@benalamedaracing2765Ай бұрын
Every engine is somewhat different so it is best you lash the valves hot and at running temps and recheck after many hours what the cold clearances are and note it somewhere in the engine compartment. This way it is exactly what your engine needs.

Great Video, Ben. Can you do a future segment on how you degree a cam. So many of us trust the cam manufacturers and just roll with timing sprocket "dot alignment" on install. Thanks for the videos, Ben!

Ben, they say the true proof of someone really knowing what they are talking about is when you can explain something to a ten year old and they can understand it. I'm sitting here in The Philippines with my eight year old Ilongo granddaughter watching this, and before the video was over, Sabrina says to me, "Papa, that was easy..."

How tight are the rockers to the pushrods befor you adjust? Are they just kinda loose?
@benalamedaracing27659 ай бұрын
On a hydraulic i feel by rotating until it tightens up which means it is zero lash and I turn it 1/8 to no more than half a turn.

How many miles to go before readjust valves
@benalamedaracing27659 ай бұрын
Depends on the amount of abuse or none that you subjected the engine on. With good parts like rockers, valves and lifters I seldom have to adjust them! Oil quality is another issue that you might be concerned and run synthetic oils.
