5:35 I have a Buick V6 engine with zero deck height with cometic .027" head gaskets. After 3 years of running the engine like that, I had a head gasket to fail (only 4 head bolts/cylinder at 30psi of boost). The pistons were imprinting on the carbon on the heads because they were so close. One even got close enough to see aluminum. That particular piston/rod could've been an oddball length, but it was definitely kissing the head ever so slightly. When I took the heads in to clean them up, they only needed .003" shaved off. I'll be stepping the gasket thickness up to .030 or .036 next time.

I've got a 1971 383 with 906 heads and got about 9-1ratio. The cam is a factory Chrysler cheater cam which has a little over 300 duration I believe but stock lift of .450. since I have zero deck height pistons, I'm going to run a set of 1966 383 closed chamber heads. -9.5cc compared to the open chambers. .020 head gasket. I think closed chamber with flat top pistons pings less than open a chamber with a raised dome on the same octane of fuel. Chrysler called those heads "fast burn" and that's why they are expelling a lot of unburdened hydrocarbons. For a clean burn exhaust you can't go much above 8.5 compression. Open chamber heads are nothing but smog heads for their slower burn. No quenching here and no performance, but cleaner and less hydrocarbons for the catalytic converter to reburn.

BBC heads really suffer with their design... They're severely "undervalved" because of it and require some real trickery to get good numbers, from my experience. One thing I saw my friend do on a few different castings, was sink the exhaust valve (50 thou or more) so the incoming intake charge flows over top of the exhaust valve face (instead of finding it's way right out through the short side, where then it REALLY can't breathe) in the low lift/over lap phase. That was pretty much how my buddy, Nick, said it... I just tried to put it more simply... He ported heads for living, and always had some wild looking stuff over there. Anyways! Thanks a million for the wisdom, Ben!

I run a stock 454 short block with closed chamber oval port heads and a steel shim gasket. I'm guessing the C.R. at 9.5 to 1 . I ported the heads and added a 2.19 intake valve. It's sitting in a 78 nova with a NP440/MY6 4 speed transmission and 3.08 gear ratio. What cam would you recommend? It's a street car. I know you probably get this question a million times. If you don't want to answer I understand.

Point number 1) Toss as much money you saved up in your personal junk drawer at it but don't tell your wife how much you have in it. Always tell her half of exactly how much is there. Point number 2) When you have run out of saved money try and sell gear head shit in the garage you may not need anymore constantly thinking of what can be sold without missing it. Point number 3) Dip into your paycheck to pay off the credit card bill and try to convince the wife it will be paid off pretty soon by using Point number 2. Point number 4) I'm ordering it cause I need it and I'll tell her I'll take care of it using the next 8 paychecks cause I just don't give a crap what she thinks anymore I'm going to get it anyways! These are largest most difficult points of engine building in my opinion.

There's a reason why every new car has 5/6/7/8 speed transmissions. Powerglides belong in some drag race applications and stock restorations. Everything else needs 3 or more gear ratios. Completely agree that every engine needs a stroker crank.

I think the oil weight is pretty much determined by the way the engine is built as well, what you’re doing with it. Tight clearances can use light weight oils. Big hp, loose engine need the higher weight. Plus are just driving to work with mostly or are you going wot everywhere you go! My pretty much stock 5.0 I run the 5w30 Motorcraft in the colder climates, I work at a ford dealer so it is available, and seems to work well from what I’ve seen. then in summer I run 15w50 Mobil one cause it’s easy to find.

@benalamedaracing27655 күн бұрын
I like the TH350 built will stay together behind a powerful small block ford or chevy! I do not waste my time with a ford trans of any type! 8.8 seems to be a little quicker because it has less drag to turn it compared to a 9 inch ford which i feel is overkill.

Thinner oils today... for street, I am leaning towards something more of a marine style not seen on small engines: a prelube pump. Requires pan modification for the pickup and a check valve to prevent backflow [wherever it ports into the block], but purging galleys for 20-30 seconds before firing after sitting overnight or longer may yield good long term benefits. 5w doesn't worry me too much but these 0w oils do - scuffing mains seems to be happening too often - clearances need germanic precision or there will be trouble. The present obsession with anti sludging detergents [calcium dosing etc] by formulators has yielded a new problem: that old school sludge tendency [often aggravated by colder thermostats] is still better than losing film thickness and experiencing startup damage. Racers/drifters with an accumulator? Electric solenoid to dump captured volume to the block before crank could serve the same purpose.
@benalamedaracing27656 күн бұрын
Your statements are right on point.
@jcnpresser5 күн бұрын
With today’s engine management controllers, Holley, aem, haltech, etc, an electric solenoid to open an oil accumulator would be really good insurance on an expensive engine, and could easily be opened by the computer with safeties setup in the software. I like it!
