2:28 - I learned this thread trick years ago and it has saved much frustration in that time. You are the first mechanic I've ever seen that knows about this (or, at least said it out loud). You didn't actually say it, although you demonstrated the turning of the thread slightly more (I usually use 1/2 turn.) For those who don't know, you can use this trick and its reverse for any thread of any type e.g., machine, sheet metal, pickle jar, milk jug, etc. The 'reverse' being: push the screw in until the top thread meets, then turn counterclockwise until the contact is felt or heard before turning clockwise to tighten. This will prevent (in all cases) cross-threading of the threaded part (lid or cap, screw, sheet metal or machine, etc.)

Also make sure that the rubber grommet is not squished too much otherwise it will squish against the valve core and cause it to fall off the rod when unscrewing it, thanks!

I’ve found a lot of times just loosening the connection to the service valve works. If it’s too tight the O ring inner diameter shrinks as it’s compressed and will hang up the core threads. If you loosen it it will relax and the core will be able to pass through. Then tighten it up for vacuum or recovery. Try and keep it as loose as possible without it leaking. Not that this is the case every time. Good vid.

We have had that same experience. That if it's to tight it won't let it come out. So we barely put on the valve tool and and then go ahead and unscrew the valve core and let it pop out and then turn your valve and if the tool is not on tight enough you will then know and at that time you can just snug up the tool.

You had the EASY job! What really happened is the entire back of the stuck schrader valve broke off leaving the threaded part still in the valve body! Now THAT'S a real bitch problem! I ended up simply leaving the (cheap) valve removal tool on the system. ($16 compared to $450 to have the entire valve body cut out and replaced)

I wonder how common it is that when attempting to remove a gauge set that the schrader valve does not close properly? If that problem is anticipated perhaps it would be good to attach the gauge set to the tool initially incase there is a problem? This way you could easily replace the valve. I'm assuming in the event there is a leak it would be small enough in most cases to remove the hose and then quickly put the tool on.

Seems like we should be able to just swap this to a ball valve after removing the schrader. But the tool has the port on the wrong side I believe.

HI, need your advice - When pulling a vacuum in a heat pump, with the schrader valve removed i am able to pull only down to 2000 microns. I then insert the schrader valve and start pulling and this time i am able to pull down to 400 microns. This sort of completely opposes the theory of pulling a vacuum with the schrader valve removed. Can you please explain this phenomenon and where I am wrong? Thanks in advance.

Should I replace all the schrader valves, including both high and low pressure ports at one time ? By the way, what is the size of these 2 ports ? 1/4 or 5/16 ?

You can replace them individually, 1/4" usually for split systems and 1/4" or 5/16" for minisplits. I have the 1/4" and 5/16" valve core removal tools linked at amazon.com/shop/acservicetech, thanks!
