Watched your video, replaced passenger side gasket on my 2003 Lexus SC430. Can’t thank you enough! Local Toyota dealer quoted $900. I spent $100 bucks on parts and a bar of soap to wash my hands after the job was done, done by a woman. For everyone out there who watched the video and are still hesitant about doing it yourself, I say don’t be! Many thanks to Harbor Area Tech!

I have a fel pro kit that comes with all the seals n everything just curious how long did u wats for the gasket sealant to cure when I did it on my other cars I usually let it sit for the rest of the day but just wondering cuz if I have something to do I don’t wanna drive it around and have it leaking oil again lol but if I don’t really need to wait that long then it’s definitely something I’ll just go ahead and knock out real fast

Ooo, I'm not a big fan of the fel pro kit. The OE gaskets definitely seal more efficiently. But that is a good question, you ask. I usually wait a minimum of 2 hours before adding oil or operating the vehicle. But the more time i could wait, the better. i believe the tube says that it dries in a couple of hours but fully cures in 16 hours. in this job , I started the vehicle and let it run for a bit after a couple of hours, but i didn't fully operate until the next day.

I’ve been replacing all the broken stuff on my LS as well. Did the starter (watched your video), power steering rack, lines, pump, inner and outer tie rods , LCA bushings. The previous owners last mechanic that did the valve cover gaskets couldn’t get them to stop leaking so I’ve been hesitant to do it because of how tight everything is and trying to keep that gasket in place looked awful. I’ve done plenty of Toyota 3.4s and 4.7s but this 4.3 looked painful. The crazy glue just changed my mind lol. After watching your video I’m assuming he didn’t put the FIPG on the front side of the valve cover because that’s where it’s leaking down onto the ac compressor driver side and both headers making a mess. Would you know of any other things that could be leaking up there besides the obvious valve cover leak? I know the cam seals were done but unfortunately not the vvti seals.
@harborareatech310
@harborareatech310 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! The crazy glue trick has come in handy for them tight valve cover gaskets for sure i learned that trick from old tech. If it's leaking onto the exhaust manifold, most likely, it's the valve cover gaskets. Make sure the valve cover washer/bolts are good. If it's leaking on the front side like you said. It could be the cam seals, vvti gear o ring, lack of FIPG on the head surface edges, or lack of FIPG on the front camshafts cap. I would clean it first, then recheck before diving into anything other than the valve covers since it is more labor extensive.

When doing this job, i recommend replacing the valve cover gaskets, spark plug tube seals, engine breather hoses, valve cover bolts/washers, pcv valve, pcv grommet, pcv hose, and spark plugs. The evap hoses may also brittle, so they may need replacement as well. i also recommend using toyota/lexus original fipg seal packing for engine sealing ( the black one)

Just had spark plug and ignition coils done 8 months ago, oil on every one and in the tubes. My spark plug tube seals were from the factory and ultimately had been failing. Not much residue/carbon build up on the spark plugs themselves but 4/6 had misfires, would they be bad in your opinion? NGK IR is what was put back in.
@harborareatech310
@harborareatech310 10 ай бұрын
@1ThousandShanks if oil is in spark plug tube, replace the tube seals. Excessive oil in the tube can cause bad contact between the ignition coil and spark plug and ultimately result in misfires. I think you meant 4/8, not 4/6. Are the cylinders musfiring all on the same bank, meaning the same side of the engine?
@1ThousandShanks
@1ThousandShanks 8 ай бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, both codes for the same bank. The tube seals were pretty much plastic on the passenger side and broke apart as I got them out, that being the reason my tubes were filled with oil. The driver side was still rubbery and both gaskets for the cover were fine.

Great video. I will use this when I do my SC430. I would have thought the crazy glue might make the rubber gaket go hard and brittle reducing the life expectancy? This is just an idea but would it be better to use some of the Toyota seal packing 103 to keep the gasket in place during installation or would that affect the sealing capability of the gasket?
