IIRC "TenFoot" is called that because the first BPM was intended to be used on TVs that the user would sit ~10 feet away from. I wouldn't be surprised if the term became derogatory as they started working on the new BPM though!

Remember how Valve announce the Valve Index right around the same time the Oculus Rift was announced to steal Rift's thunder? Maybe Valve will do the same around Quest 3's release but not ship the Deackard until 2024. The early reservation system worked pretty good for the Deck

@@SadlyItsBradley I think that would be a mistake. It's very likely that the specs on the Apple device are ridiculous and extremely costly. Valve would then have to market their headset as the cheaper option while showing off lots of inferior stats... I think it's more likely they'll take a dump on Meta and show off their vastly superior hardware that way. Even more likely: They'll keep clear of both announcements because Valve is kinda small fry this time around... They're not competing with the tiny little Oculus crew, they're competing with Meta, the biggest BY FAR VR hardware and software manufacturer... When the index came out, Oculus was still small, not much bigger than Valve on the VR stage... Today, that's no longer even remotely the case. Meta has sold about 10x+ the amount of headsets Valve has sold.. And devs have largely abandoned PCVR.. And for games, Meta is said to have 30 games/apps to show off for their Q3... Valve has what? Are we finally getting Counter-Strike in VR? That would be their only obvious game.. Portal has proven to be pretty nauseating for a large majority.. So it's gonna be Counter-Strike, which is awesome... Pretty thin for a launch though.. Especially after realizing that the only game they made for the Index was Alyx... Seems reasonable to assume that the Deckard will also get ONE game.. Meanwhile we're all angry about the slim pickings on the PSVR2.. Valve is not in a great position right now outside the copium saturated bubble. VR as a whole is a bit shaky atm. Not sure Valve could do much to unshake it with their next 1000 dollar headset... In an era where the 550 dollar PSVR2 was WAY too high for the common man.. I fear for Valve's VR future..

I reported a Linux SteamVR beta compositor issue to the SteamVR bug report discussion area. I actually saw some feedback from Valve, and it sounded like they were interested in addressing it! Woo hoo! I'm hoping Deckard/Steam Deck ultimately means much more love for Linux in general.

They need to announce a lot of software for Deckard to really make a splash. Once people remember that Valve supported their previous 1000 dollar VR rig with ONE SINGULAR GAME, the reality of their next headset being the same abandoned chunk of electronics might spook some people... Especially if Valve goes for a lot of custom hardware again, hardware no devs will waste their time developing for because Deckard users will be at most 10% of the PCVR playerbase by the end of the first year. The Q3 is coming out strong with a ton of apps/games(or so Meta claims). If Valve comes knocking with one game again, a lot of us will just laugh.. The Vita was supported infinitely more than the Index... Even the Dreamcast got more support than the Index. Hell, the Ouya even got more support.. How so many people stay loyal to a hardware manufacturer and game developer who abandoned their $1k hardware on day 2 is beyond me...

8:15 These menus are part of Deck UI The steam menu is a sidebar that has shortcuts to home, library, shop, settings, etc. In game, it's also where you edit controller layout and force quit a game. You get to it by pressing the Steam button on the Deck The "Quick Access Menu" is what you get when you press the (...) button on the Steam Deck. On an Xbox controller, you can also get to it from pressing Xbox Logo + A. It's also a sidebar, but from the opposite side of the screen. It has notifications, friend list, and quick settings (like volume, brightness, blue light filter, open virtual keyboard, etc)

The best vr overal was the HP Reverb G2 Ver2. I was hoping for the past 2 yrs an anouncement for Reverb G3 but istead the opposite was done: HP stoped the G2 production. Lately im feeling that the vr hype that was on from 2017 to 2021 is done. Even apple doesnt know what to do with its vr headset project and how to market it. As a vr enthusiast and owner of Oculus Rift CV1 im very sad. I enjoy playing Elite dangerous, Euro/American Truck simulator, No mans sky on my headset and i was hoping for a true NeXT gen headsets (We are still on Generation 1 sespite all those headsets that came after Rift CV1)

Two issue the index had. Glare and weight. Just improve them and add next-gen stuff. It was the glare the reason I sold mine. I can't handle artefacts much, hence pancake lenses are the future.

Hi Brad, thanks for the delicious info! I was wondering, on the topic of HDR, if we have any inklings around potential brightness levels of the displays, with pancake optics looking so hot atm. I believe you've talked before about eMagin's dPd technology and their high brightness of ~10,000 nits, but at 10% persistence this would quickly dwindle below what I'd consider HDR (at least as Sony advertises for the PSVR2) levels of brightness. Sort of in line with this, I was wondering about possible refresh rates for potential displays, as I've heard that highers refresh rates (say 240 Hz) can allow for higher pixel persistence due to shorter frame times, and the math (in my head) kinda works out nicely to roughly 200-250 nits to the eye, which would be totally radical

Although I would love to see WiGig2 it's most likely too expensive, power hungry and would add significant weight. So I think if Deckard gets released it will have native WiFi 7 support. Just like 6E we would have 6GHz support which should help with less interference and also combined with double max channel bandwidth (320Mhz) it should provide a good boost in data transfer rate.
