You gave your daughter the dirty and difficult job! I always tell my eldest to make sure she doesn’t get let her clothes touch the lifting table because she will end up with grease and oil all over her tum. Great to have her involved. Great explanation of what to do with an existing engine. Amazing to see the difference on air and adjusting the valve along the spindle whilst ticking over. Good stuff.

Daughters are wonderful Tom and we have a now 16 year old well up in practical things like decorating her room. Then again she knew the right way to put a drill bit in a power drill driver at about 3 years old. We are just about to put our Nigel Gresley 01 Tango back together once we get some lovely days to paint the outsides of the frames. Superbly instructed as always. David and Lily Reading.

Please tell me with the name tango it’s going to be bright orange… 😂 hope it won’t be long before that good weather sets in.

@@TomsWorkshop42 A MATT red inside and a Satin BLACK in Simonize very high temperature paint with Brake calliper red for the front and rear beams. The bright one will be what I am calling a Fowler Complex based upon a Simplex as we got a mass of bits almost given with a boiler from Simon personally several years ago. Via Reading Services.

Tom, I love the channel. This video was fascinating. Totally enthralled from start to finish. I have a tip for you. You mentioned that your silicone had dried up. This tip works for any tube based substance. When you have finished using your silicone get your glue gun out and coat the tip about 2.5" along the nozzle making sure the tip is completely covered. When you need to use it again just shave the glue off with a Stanley knife. When you finish - reglue it. I have resealed tubes and used them again 18 months later. Have you run the engine with the modified blast pipe yet? ❤

Thanks. I will give it a thought, the silicone I use for the locos is in a small type with screw on lid, but sure that principle would work better than the lid. I have had one run with the one that I showed being made, as seen at the end of the video, but pulled the fire too well, so have opened it up and made a couple of other mods, plus some new safety valves, should be giving it a run tomorrow.

Good job you had an expert steam mechanic there to help you out and get things right.

Just what I wanted to see.I am about to set the valve gear on a loco and need to first set the return crank and excentric rod.

I think I would have filled the hole (then re drilled it) on the end of the shaft instead of cutting the forked end off. Adjustment on those valves is mind bending (took me ages on a 2" traction engine) Great video. Running like clockwork
@TomsWorkshop428 ай бұрын
I did consider that too, I can’t remember what put me off doing it that way around. Maybe it was not wanting to disturb the bearing and having to bore the rod to get the right fit.

Yes, traction engines are a pain because the timing changes as the boiler expands… I’ve not had to do one yet…

My wife would've had a fit if she caught me getting our daughters to do a mucky job like that in school uniform!

lol, I’ve learnt to grab and encourage at every opportunity, if I said get changed first then I wouldn’t see her at all… lol.

I don't think this is quite right,. the first setting you showed adjusting the return crank for front dead centre and back dead centre is only to determine the correct length of the eccentric rod. Now you need to adjust the return crank to acheive the hairline opening of the valve in both directions.etc. If this is wrong forgive me !
@TomsWorkshop424 ай бұрын
It does both at the same time. On both front and back dead centres the expansion link should be mid stroke, so the only position where the eccentric rod is the same distance from the expansion link when the link is in its mid position, must be the correct setting for the return crank and the correct length for the rod. After that the valve position on the spindle can be adjusted for correct position.

I am currently b uilding up a project Stanier mogul.This has hollow crank pins which are a bit of a pain as the only way to secure the return crank is by 6BA grub screw down the oil hole in the con rod.When I have the correct adjustment I will pin the return crank to the crank pin. All good fun and thanks again for your reply

Hi Tom, lovely engine I’m repainting my lms class 4 tank at the minute but struggling to find transfers for the lining do you know any places that do them or any places that do custom made ones?

Endon valley customs would do custom stuff for you, or fox transfers…
