Located at the foot of the Ocejón peak, Valverde de los Arroyos is possibly one of the most beautiful places on the Route of the Black Towns, if not the most. And it is that in this enclave of the northwest of the province of Guadalajara popular mountain architecture, nature, traditions and gastronomy are mixed in complete harmony.
Of course, what almost everyone agrees on is that the town of Valverde represents one of the best exponents of the so-called black architecture so typical of these lands. And, therefore, a safe bet if it is not possible to do the entire route.

Valverde de los Arroyos: discover a black town surrounded by amazing nature
The Route of the Black Towns is a mandatory getaway for all those who love rural tourism in Spain. A group of small towns and villages in the Sierra de Guadalajara where a popular architecture with a lot of personality has been developed, marked by the massive use of slate, the absolute star of practically all constructions.
Valverde de los Arroyos is the most famous of them and a worthy representative also included in the list of The Most Beautiful Towns in Spain. And it is not for less, since this town located at more than 1200 meters of altitude is surrounded by a spectacular natural environment whose protagonist is Pico Ocejón, an authentic emblem of the Sierra de Ayllón and a reference place for mountain fans. .
However, the constructions of this small town have a different point. And it is that the roofs of Valverde not only look black, but also the bright flashes of the gneiss stone shine on them. A particularity that also occurs in other towns in the area such as Almiruete or Palancares.
In addition to slate and gneiss, wood and clay are also part of this unique way of building, adapted to the only materials that used to be in the area. A constructive style that gives a very special, compact and uniform appearance to all the constructions that end up integrating perfectly with the environment, forming a postcard of great beauty.
In the year 1149, Valverde became part of the Common of Villa and Tierra de Atienza when Alfonso VII, King of Castilla y León, assigned an enormous territory to Villa de Atienza that included the Ocejón area. After the progressive loss of territories of the Común de Villa and Tierra de Atienza, in 1354, Pedro I of Castilla granted Iñigo López de Orozco the Señorío de Galve in which Valverde and surrounding areas remained integrated. In 1404 the Señorío became the property of the Zúñiga (or Estúñiga) family who kept it in their possession until 1543 when Doña Ana de la Cerda bought it. The deed of sale corresponding to this last transaction, dated in Valladolid on September 18, 1544, says:
I am selling "the town of Galve with its fortress and the places on its land: Cestalviejo, Valdepinillos, Lagüerce, Zarzuela, Pedro Yuste, Ombrialejo, Valverde, Majadas Viejas, Palancares, La Mata de Robledo, with all its neighbors, customs, rights, and easements, as they may belong to it, from the leaf of the mountain to the stone of the river, at a price of 6,123,546 maravedíes”

The appellation “BLACK VILLAGES” is derived from the fact that much of the architectural building material used in construction is SLATE which has a dark grey color and is abundant in that area thus making the buildings look darker in comparison to the stone architecture of other areas where the building material is of a lighter color.

¿Estilo Colonial? Es arquitectura CASTELLANA. Edificios de piedra con vigas y balcones de madera en un entorno salvaje. Observa las chimeneas y los empedrados de las calles. En primavera el pueblo debe ser espectacular y su entorno una delicia. Esa parte de España tiene mucha historia y es muy salvaje...los lobos ibéricos han vuelto a la zona después de casi un siglo de su desaparición. La provincia de Guadalajara es una autentica joya.

Muy cerca de Madrid. A unos 130 kilómetros. Si alquilas un coche y te programas bien puedes hacer tres o cuatro días de viaje visitando los pueblos negros (éste, Campillo de Ranas, Majaelrayo...), Buitrago de Lozoya, Sepúlveda, Riaza, Pedraza, Segovia, La Granja, Riofrío, el Paular-Rascafría y lo que se te ocurra, porque el paisaje es precioso si te gusta la montaña y es una tierra llena de castillos, iglesias, monasterios...

it is not an abandoned village, it is a village with holiday homes that is inhabited in the summer
