As I wrote on another Black Hawk experience site, Feldman is for my money the most vastly underrated jazz pianist of his or any era. The proof to my pudding is recorded here in the solo by Feldman on this Vamp's Blues rendition. As a lifelong, very mediocre but enthusiastic blues piano person, I have to say this is my very favorite blues piano solo in the world. Begins at about the six-minute mark and within it are all of the various chops Feldman has and then some. Besides this solo, his vamping during the whole Black Hawk set is wonderful. Best single jazz record I own.

Victor Feldman is incredible, as always, on this cut - Joe Gordon was always highly underrated as a trumpet player - this a "Great" extended live cut from 1 of 5 very good CD's (Albums) recorded live at the Black Hawk - "KEEP ENJOYING THE SOUNDS OF JAZZ" (listen to AZULE SERAPE from Cannonball's LIVE AT THE LIGHTHOUSE and you get another incredible solo by Vic Feldman)

Dick Roche I believe that Joe Gordon was underused during his short life, rather than underrated. He played with all the greats, in fact. Monk, Silver and Blakey, just to mention a few. He died accidentally (fire) at a very young age. Those iconic Black Hawk live-recordings are among the very best ever. And mr Gordon, imo, never played better than on that truly incredible bleak autumn night in ‘59! Just Dig & Cheers!

As good as the other soloists are this is really should have been just Victor Feldman feature. He is just as great blues player as anybody. He was and still is the best jazz musician to come out of England.

vova47 Not to forget Tubby. These remarkable 4 LP/5 CD set are imo the best ever small-club live performances. These men, in total artistic harmony and inspiration, played their bloody hearts out, nudging 60 years ago. Purely legendary Jazz of the highest order. In fact mr Feldman was a “fill-in pianist”. If i remember correctly Shelly’s regular pianist Russ Freeman was at the time on tour i believe in Europe with the Benny Goodman band. This is certainly one of mr Feldmans best recordings. But the credit goes to each of these incredible Jazz artists. And the ultimate due goes to the leader! Dig this utter gem, Enjoy & Cheers!
