That is mausoleum not a crypt. It's not a 'V', it's a floral design - a flower and two leaves. The name may have been chiseled off if the mausoleum was sold to someone else. Engraving costs money, and perhaps there was no money to re-engrave the name on the outside, or there used to be a plaque that is now long gone. All those scratch marks are just vandalism that was there before the metal gate was put up. No vampires, just an old mausoleum. Cool urban legends though.

The "V" shape is a base relief architecture feature to match the tops of the columns. It was chiseled off as well.

there is no name on it because the cemetary owns it. they stored bodies there in winter until the ground thawed and they could bury them

Google Erie Cemetery vampire and there are several hits. One provides in depth information about the burials. The mausoleum itself is owned by a Mrs. Brown who died in 1924. She left no instructions in her will about ownership after her demise. My understanding of Pennsylvania law is the mausoleum will remain as is because only the owner can make decisions and when the owner is deceased, well, you get the idea.

The two missing bodies may be infants, therefore, possibly buried with adults. Also, they may be un-named because they were stillborn or died at birth. Many women who gave birth during this time died giving birth, so baby was buried with them.

Umm... The first story is very flawed! If he broke in at night, there would be no corpses inside to steal a ring from. Vampires are abroad at night according to folklore. Also, a bit further in to the story, apparently the boy told his friends there were no corpses in the crypt! So how could he steal a 'vampires ring'? The 'V' is definitely a stylised flower and leaves motif.

I’m just repeating the legend. It’s definitely flawed and local lore. But, I think it’s fascinating if you can suspend reality abit.
