Vampire Hunter D : Bloodlust “I Was One Of Them” (English)
The epic scene in the animated film of 2000, Vampire Hunter D : Bloodlust, in which the aged mechanic named Poe stands up on behalf of D. The story he tells is incredible. He was “One of Them” and always wanted to repay his hero.

With the crap job that is being down with all the remakes and reboots lately I am not gonna be sad if they leave a few things alone and don't remake/reboot them. As for why it never got bigger it was just bad timing by a few years. And that's what some people miss about this scene: The old man's way of repaying the debt isn't saving D's life. D likely would have just left if the old man hadn't spoken up. The old man is repaying the debt by treating D as just another person, instead of being afraid of him.

Something I noticed while rereading the novels [since they're being republished as three-volume omnibi now] and something I really like is the theme that it is not D's story to tell. He's aloof and distanced from the narrative as a whole, seeing as he's lived for so long and seen so much, but it's a story more about the people he encounters along the way as he travels and plies his trade. We see the world and its inhabitants through his eyes, and sometimes there's focus on D as a character, but for the most part it's kind of telling that despite the fact that the world around him changes so much, D himself just ... doesn't. Something I like to think is captured in this scene right here, actually; Pop remembers him from when he was a kid, because D just simply doesn't change. The strangest mash of genres happened with this series and I'm extremely in love with it, from classic monster horror to cosmic horror, post-apocalyptic fantasy and steampunk meeting American western. We're coming up on almost twenty years since Bloodlust, maybe they'll bring out the long-rumored third movie then, seeing as how it took them just about twenty years to release Bloodlust after the first one from the 80s haaa Kinda hoping it'd be Raiser of Gales or Pilgrimage of the Sacred and Profane; gunning for the latter because that deals more on D's parentage and his own personal quest, which for the book series is kind of out of the ordinary but would be perfect pacing for a movie series

A lot of manga are this way, often many characters have fairly large stories of their own within the manga even without being the titular character of the story, I’ve seen it in Rurouni Kenshin, Battle Angel Alita, and so on. I’m disappointed that there aren’t really more than 2 animated films, but this animation? It holds up pretty well now 24 years later.

Fear can lead people to making stupid choices and disregarding reason, he is a Half-Vampire, therefore threat, therefore oppose. That's the thought process, probably not much more to say about it. Bear in mind that in this setting Vampires were pretty much the rulers of the Earth for a couple hundred years and they generally weren't kind to humanity in that time. So, there's probably significant cultural scars on humans as whole when it comes to Vampires, and everything connected to them, and that's before we address that these people have seemingly had trouble with vampires within living memory, these are kids who grew up on stories of all the times Vampires or the Monsters they created harmed their town (yes Vampires created a lot of the monsters we see in this series, not sure if the general public would know that, but I could believe it might have been mythologized, like "once upon a time the vampires took over, and in their cruelty unleashed monsters upon the earth" or something), some of them probably have relatives who had directly suffered under Vampires, the Old Man was just one of the few to have the right perspective and the wisdom to remember to judge them on an individual basis rather than just jumping to conclusions, not to mention him remembering that it was D who actually helped him as a child.

I’m just as much in love with the animation and story writing of this gem as everyone else. They did very much the same thing with Bebop. And it seems they just dropped the style all together, I don’t even want to hear of an attempted live action rendition of something like this. Because as usual it will never hold up. They need to start taking notes from artists like this anymore I swear.

In vampire Hunter D anyways. Even the 1985 film says Dhampir. The word which they said in Dunpeal. But it sounds as if they mistranslated it based on how it phonetically sounds in Japanese

The Old Man was a lot more sensible than even he realized. The fact that the dampile was willing to pay for the horse meant he had pressing business elsewhere and wanted to be on his way. Letting him buy the horse and leave was the fastest way to get him out of town without hurting anyone. If the sheriff and his men drove him out, there was a very good chance that he would have come back later, killed a few hundred people, and gotten the horse anyway. Just saying.
@Cthululululu

Well, if he was a much worse person, yeah. D's quite proud to have never claimed a human life with that sword of his- But the logic is still objectively correct; if he was the exact kind of monster the other towns folk were afraid of, that'd be the right solution unless their confident they could slay him.
@ethenallen1388
@ethenallen1388 3 ай бұрын
I know enough about D to be sure that he would not willingly kill humans. I'm just looking at this from the viewpoint of a scared town person who didn't know his history, thinking, "Get the dempire out of here. If it means selling him a horse, then for the love of God, sell him a horse."

I’m glad this hasn’t fallen in the hands of Hollywood or Netflix. No one needs a woke Vampire Hunter D. Considering they would most definitely ruin it and make him “Vampire Hunter G” using the pander stone from the Panderverse.
