Packard was a classic fighter. Psychology, efficiency, measured use of resources and eye always on the prize. Of course, he has that noble zeon "knighthood" air about him. Salutes, seeking a glorious death, sparing the feelings of his lady. And a grudging respect to his adversary. Norris Packard is the best example I've seen of just why war is awful; he was by all measures an intelligent, conscientious, noble and driven man. And he died for nothing. Even his hard fought last stand doesn't save the Kurgaran. He believes he succeeds, and dies peacefully. But all that happened was a delayed massacre and the loss of yet another good man. In the original Gundam, Amuro was trying to figure out the Gouf's capabilities and was disturbed that it outperformed the Zaku II by roughly 20% in every category, then later determined that he'd underestimated it; fortunately for him, the Gouf's 75mm finger machine guns just didn't have the power to really threaten his Gundam and that was its only shortcoming. The Gouf Custom has even better performance than the original Gouf, the longer barrels on the 75mm gatling gun mean greater firepower even though shooting the same ammunition, all combining into a package that, when piloted by someone who actually knows what they're doing is absolutely TERRIFYING. The MS-08 Efreet was an even higher performance derivative of the Gouf, but it was so expensive that they only produced eight of them... six of which survived the OYW, and at least one survived until UC 0096, where it absolutely wrecked much newer Feddie MS like the GM III. Heck, seeing a Juaggau tank a beam saber strike and just casually punch an MS to death shows what absolute beasts Zeon MS were in the OYW. The only reason we saw so many Zekes die in MSG is because the Gundam was protected by the best armor (and plot armor) and Amuro was simply the best pilot of all time.

It's a question of money. All of those little details take time and therefore money to animate, which cant be done with the budget the have when they have to make an entire series. Still Gundam THE ORIGIN has a similar feel to the combat to this in some areas especially the Guntank scene.
@Bustermachine5 жыл бұрын
@@PS3NutHead The way I've heard it from art friends, it's usually studio morale that matters more than pure budget. Budget matters too, but two shows with the same budget but different levels of studio morale will be significantly better/worse in terms of their animation. I suppose OVA's also benefit from a less compressed schedule. It doesn't matter how much money you lavish some things can only be done so quickly. Sure, more animators can help, but then it's harder for the high level staff to keep track and provide adequate direction.

Could be wrong, but I think it had to do more with the nature of vulcan guns mounted on the Ez-8. Since the Ez-8 isn't an actual upgrade but rather an in-field mod/repair, it's vulcans guns aren't the normal Feddie MS standard/caliber. Personally, I always wondered why Packard dodged the 60mm vulcans from Karen's unit, but didn't flinch when it came to Shiro's light show. 🤔
@iguanamoat6 ай бұрын
@@IsaacIVMarc My reading was that he was experienced enough to know Shiro couldn't possibly aim properly while tearing down the silo with the Ez-8 shaking all over the place. It was the only move in this realistic urban battle that was straight out of a cartoon or super robot show, and in this 'real' environment it was bound to fail. Packard knew he had just as much chance of getting hit if he was sitting still with his shield up, as he would have if he tried to dodge what basically ended up being randomly aimed fire. I think Packard's commentary highlights this, making fun of how it *looked* good but noting it was completely ineffective.
@IsaacIVMarc5 ай бұрын
@@iguanamoat I see what you're saying. In fact, I'm aware that's what Packard literally stated. However, you notice that in any Gundam series, mobile suits, even Gundams, very rarely plunge forward against vulcan fire. Going back to this instance, it seemed odd to stand still despite Shiro's barrage of vulcan- and machine-gun fire. In Gundam, pilots are constantly paranoid about losing a sub camera and gaining [another] blind spot. It may have had to do with the story writing more than anything, but were it Amuro, he would have definitely stood his ground, defending with his shield to avoid any "lucky" stray shots. Huge Gundam fan, so I notice these things. 😸

I love this scene, Packard is such a badass. The Gouf Custom is my favorite MS, and this scene shows just how fatal it can be if properly piloted. He danced around those other suits like they were bricks, it was almost no contest. And the only reason he died, while still technically winning and accomplishing his mission, is because he chose to. As much as I try to like the Gundams, and as much as I actually do like the RX-78, the Zeon suits, especially the Gouf, look cooler to me. Hooded Knave It's a fairly common consensus and one I share. In the end, his objective was to destroy the Guntanks, not necessarily to come back alive. I think it's one of the few scenes where the literal subtitle translation fits the moment better, because the I won/I lost complex really hits home on the fact that the battle between the EX8 and Gouf really wasn't about who killed the other, but whether the strategic objective was met. Norris had a mission he was determined to see done, but he cared for Aina's own feelings and the war wasn't an eternal one, so he did the only thing he realistically could do to satisfy a conflict of interests, hence why "he won".
@gamester5128 жыл бұрын
+IronSoul890 Honestly, I still find it sad that Norris had to die at all though, he was a good and kind man, and I kinda wish that he took out the third Guntank (accomplishing his mission) and then simply withdrew from the battle (since it's unlikely the 08th MS Team would have been able to pursue him considering how the Ez-8 needed both repair and resupply) to try and rendezvous with Aina later (possibly even coming to the Ez-8's aid against the Apsalus III).

I fully grant you that their strategies were horrific, but they had essentially been made slaves by the Earth Federation. @@MechanicalRabbits I don't know. In retrospect, I believe that Char made that sacrifice to ignite the fire of the New types. Consider that we learn the Federation had the 13th provision to the Universal Century Charter, wherein if "a new breed of humanity should come to exist as a result of colonization, then the spacenoids would receive independence, and suffrage within the Earth Sphere government. Since, up until that point Newtypes were either viewed as skilled pilots, or medical experiments in the case of Cyber Newtypes. It wasn't until the "Axis Shock," where several Newtypes united their powers to stop Axis from falling, that humanity was ultimately forced to recognize Newtypes, and once Laplace's Box was opened, it formed the foundation for colonial independence. So, I argue that Char never changed, he did everything to see his father's will made a reality.

Norris is an Ace pilot for a reason, and there's a reason the 08th MS team is freaking out a bit, they know Norris is much more skilled than they are. The Gouf Custom was technically inferior to the 08th MS Team's Ground-Type Gundams, but Norris used his superior experience as a pilot and the surrounding environment to his advantage in order to tip the odds in his favor. Hell, if the Guntank even tried it Norris might have just blasted it with the Gouf Custom's machine cannons before the Guntank could even get a shot off. The fight was much too close-range for the Guntanks to be effective. Their armor is basically like paper compared to the Gouf Custom, Ground-Type Gundams, or the Ez8. 5:14 - 5:22 My favorite scene in the series. We see him lift a little in his seat, and his shirt lift from his high fall. Also, the visual of him firing all of his guns as he falls.
@Amenomihashira2 ай бұрын
I love how this scene demonstrates the enormous spectrum of what it means to be a good pilot. In shows where the protagonist immediately possesses superhuman powers like super speed, strength or flight, the growth of the character's skill is far less pronounced. This is a big problem with say, Dragon Ball Z. But in this scene, you have the protagonists feeling fairly confident with themselves, but are still piloting big clunky hunks of metal and it shows. This creates a power void in which to introduce a truly terrifying enemy that has capabilities far beyond what the viewer is accustomed to, and the raised emotional stakes that go along with it. Just brilliant.

Though I love Zeon, it's high command made a habit of wasting their best men on suicide missions, or stringing them out with no support. It's no wonder they lost the war. Norris Packard? Forced into a suicide mission to create an opening for his comrades to potentially escape (Spoiler: it was for nothing, basically everyone died anyways). Ramba Ral? Cut out of the political arena, ostracized, forced into military service, and then regularly refused support during his mission to eliminate the Gundam. Leading to his pointless and needless death. The Black Tri Stars? Uselessly flung at the Gundam yet again. The list goes on. Zeon's highly skilled, but limited manpower was drained needlessly in many operations like this.
@SudrianTales2 жыл бұрын
The problem with Zeon is Zeon itself, the structure was almost Nazi which sounds cool but is downright Medevial in the way production was handled. I bet you that like the Nazis, Zeon was never able to utilize its resources anywhere near 50 percent of what it should've been due to infighting and corruption so bad that Russia would find it too much. Furthermore, it's actions against its neighbors (the other space colonies) turned valuable support to the Federation or neutrality instead of their arms.

I haven't a proper understanding of zeon, but to me at least they seem very much like the german army, a force of tactics. That being said they have cooler snipers, so I'm totally a zeon loyalist.I also wonder what the casualties of the war, the fedies lost a ton of civies but they never mention military casualties. It seems the fedies had better tech but still seem to lose countless mobile suits for small units of Zeon forces. Am I right in that?
@SudrianTales2 жыл бұрын
@@tarektechmarine8209 ignore that, Zeon is basically coasting on being ahead of the trend for mobile suit construction. However, from what I've seen they have little in the way of support and their logistics are god awful. In a realistic world, Zeon would've been Russia invading Ukraine
@baxterrhodes75422 жыл бұрын
@@tarektechmarine8209 Gundam: Universal Century 79 was based entirely off of WW2 and to an extent WW1. So you are right. Zeon is very much based off of Germany in those eras. Also, yes, while the Federal Forces enjoyed better technology (in some areas) and manpower. Their leadership was old, stale and corrupt. Making them wasters of their manpower that they could afford to spare.

The best thing about 8th ms for me. I's they don't use a over the top gundam. the destroys hundreds of enemies in like a minute an not get a scratch. This is purely grounded in a military sense using tactics, team work, and not tank the enemy using powerful mech, being a newtype, a coordinator, a innovator etc. There just normal enlisted soldiers fighting a war, with there wits bravery an a bit of luck an faith. It's stories like this help flush out that there are people aside from Amuro an Char fighting in the one year war.
