I still like the original Vampire Hunter D. Flawed sure, but I love the 80's Gothic atmosphere and creature designs. Might not be as pretty as Bloodlust but I feel the horror elements of the original film a bit more.

For the record I love how they try to adapt Yoshitaka Amano's designs. Im so use to most of his designs being adapted almost like the animators said "Ohh uhhhh yeah I didn't see any of his drawings sorry..." trying to sweep a watercolor over designed semi abstract pile of art and references under a rug
@KaiserBeamz6 жыл бұрын
I wish I could've talked about that more because even though Toyoo Ashida did the final designs, he really took Amano's original designs into account. The designs of Lamika and the Three Sisters certainly are the most 'Amano-esq' in the anime.

Loved the anime for it's detail and horror contents in 1995, but after having bought the DVD in 2018 the series is unique and still impressive for it's artwork and animation for 1985. A uniquely fluid cartoon from Japan that combines a bit of Castlevania with The Matrix effects before the year 2000.

If that's the dub you saw Kaiser...ouch. What was great watching this film as a kid in the 90's was hearing your favorite 80's voice cast, Shin from FOTNS as D, Kato from Doomed Megalopolis as Count Magnus Lee. come on now! Your ears were robbed! But yeah.. damn watching the animation quality now, taking off my rose-colored glasses, does indeed hurt the eyes in some of those scenes. anyway great review, thanks for the upload.

I enjoyed this for 26 years since i was 11 when i rented it and dug it, i thought D was cool, Doris was hot and Magnus Lee was a great villain. The sequel is even better

For all its faults, the first film was still one of my favorites. Being a big fan of Amano's designs, the fact that there were flaws was easy to ignore. What I can't particularly ignore is that the series was not fully adapted, and it was out of sequence. The second adaptation was from the third book, rather than the second. This series has so much potential, and it's a shame that it was never fully explored.

The Streamline dub is way better. I first saw it with the Sentai dub and didnt enjoy it much but the Streamline dub helps me enjoy it a lot more. It's a fun movie to watch every now and then for its atmosphere and simple plot plus I love the soundtrack. It's also a movie I introduce friends to anime with along with Akira and various Lupin movies and most have enjoyed it despite the cheap production in some areas

What do you think of the streamline dub
@benb33162 жыл бұрын
I'd disagree strongly with your negative review of VHD. Considering the time, technology, budget its near perfect. You are clipping from a later dub so maybe its mangled a bit but a classic. And luckily the novel has been translated - and made a Manga. IMO the second one though the Anime quality/budget was nuclear in comparison has more flaws but both are still excellent. Also - one of the biggest flaws indeed is the introductions - text rolls at the front. IMO they should have revealed less so not really until the catacomb scene is it obvious its far into the future. (any guess what movie its a tribute to?) That is something "Role Playing Games" are finally coming around to come to grips with - that they owe far more to Jack Vance than Tolkien and are the far future with long cycles of rise and fall of civilizations and the monsters, dungeons and even 'magic' are legacies. Anyways, love your channel and videos - disagree here but not the end of the world or anything. God knows how many times I've watched this movie. And IMO a good movie to any kid who can take scary (and the net has already shown more nipple...heheh) - D's talk to Dan alone is worth a watch.

While the movie has its flaws, the book and manga adaption are better. The series as a whole is phenomenal but its only really in novel form and i wish it get more adaptions in either the form the dark horse manga did or more animated stuff. But the movie def has a place in my heart as it was the 1st anime i ever saw as a kid while flicking thru channels and i was like ooh cartoon wait this is pretty wild lol

Vampire Hunter D (filmed released 1985) is technically the inspiration for Castlevania 1 NES (NES game relased1986). That is how ground breaking it is. Why Konami do not mention that fact? Why it does not get the credit? Well, copyright issues of course. In fact, Castlevania Symphony of the Night is copy of the half-vampire hero with a sword killing tons monsters. Konami did not even bother to hide the fact by then and hope that Vampire Hunter D was never remembered, so they can feel like they original and ground breaking. Too bad they are just copycats.

I've noticed many reviewers use the Sentai dub for clips instead of the Streamline version...was there a reason? I really love the original dub, but maybe isn't well liked because the Sentai's script is closer to the original ?
