I am a rare creature. Vampire Knight is my all time favourite manga. I do indeed have a big head over this fact, and in my eyes those who watched the anime and then judge the series on the anime and critique it are the same people who just read the title of news articles and not the content itself. My hot take in defense of vampire knight, is that it is no weirder than every other wack ass anime trope we overlook. I will rewatch Vampire Knight, reread the entire manga, and I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next chapter of Vampire Knight Memories. For all of Vampire Knight's issues, after being forced by a friend to sit through both seasons, I can honestly say that both the design and the soundtrack are phenomenal. My friend has the art book and I have to admit that it is gorgeous.

Genuinely, I found the subbed version of Vampire Knight before I found the dubbed... And I'm pretty sure this anime is the reason why I prefer to watch subbed over dubbed. With the exception of Code Geass. I found fan-subbed episodes before Crunchyroll was really a thing, and the amount of sparkley rainbow WordArt interjections added to make Code Geass even gayer was too much for me. Like, yay gay subtext, but I'd prefer to watch overly complex political machinations without Lelouch getting glitter thrown over every dramatic arm flourish.

Kaname isn’t her brother he’s her ancestor. (Even though he was raised with her like siblings) kaname actively says “if I truly was born as her older brother I’d be much happier.” Kaname is the original kuran. But yeah no that part of it really weird. Even thought sibling marriage was a Normal thing in irl history till people saw it as a bad thing.

It wasn't so clear in the anime. The Kaname we see in the show, is one of the very first vampires, which would make him Yuki's Ancestor. There's lots of detail, but I won't go too deep into it now. Kaname is about 10.000 years old but put himself into a long slumber as he was simply tired of living. Also someone who was really close to him died, where he didn't see much to live for anymore (understably after so many years already) This ancestor Kaname was awoken by Rido Kuran. Rido killed the "real" Kaname who was actually Yuki's biological brother, when he was still a baby, to make him a sacrifice to Ancestor Kaname who was asleep for so many years. So Yuki's biological brother is dead. Rido wanted Kanames power (as he is one of the most powerful vampires since hes still one of the first ones to exist) so he woke him up with the sacrifice. But Rido underestimated Ancestor Kaname. Anc. Kaname was incredibly thirsty and realized the baby and Rido wouldn't be enough for him to be able to control himself. So he used his power and turned himself into an infant since his original body couldn't heal himself enough. Haruka (Yuki's Father and Ridos Brother) found them. So Anc. Kanames was raised as Yuki's brother by Haruka and Yuri Kuran. He suppressed his memories and grew up with the Family Kuran. It's actually coincidence that Yuki's biological baby brother was named Kaname as well.

Oh it's kinda worse, he's not actually her sibling, but like the ancestor to most if not all pureblood vampires, but he WANTS to be her biological brother that groomed and then went on to isolate her, not going to lie but the show would've actually been good if they ditched the source material, removed that sub plot and just leaned into making kaname the bad guy (and actually giving a satisfactory conclusion to hanabusa's whole arc)
