Fun Fact: the character designs are all based on the portraits of Gustav Klimt. The King and Queen are from the painting “the kiss” while Gargona is literally the lady with snakes. The world building itself includes the blue spirals and triangles always present in Klimts works.

What I always got from the show growing up is that the world wasn't exactly real? I think Mia's parents _made_ that world for her, as well as the bracelet, and the reason it expands alongside her is because it revolves around her. It starts basic, elves vs weird woman, then expands as Mia explores. Like a minecraft map, it only loads in more chunks as you venture into those chunks. That's always how I understood it, at least.

I used to love this show so much. Me and my best friend used to be the 'imaginary magic world' children and this really fueled my imagination. Maybe it's partly because of the fact it's both real actors and animation, which made it seem so real for me. And the art is just stunning.

The creator of the show, Gerhard Hahn is german, and in german the word "Elfen" refers more commonly to those little insect-winged people, so that’s why they’re called elves instead of faeries or pixies here.

Something I didn’t realise when I first watched the show is that the visual style of Centopia is very heavily drawing from Gustav Klimt. The king and queen look like they’ve been ripped straight out of one of, if not his most famous work, the kiss. I’m really curious why they did this? It’s not everyday you see a kids show trying to mimic the aesthetic of an Austrian painter’s work. It might be something worth noting in your next video, because now my interest is piqued (that and because I never saw past the fist two seasons, but that’s besides the point).

I think the “she’s an elf but she has wings?” thing can be explained with the context that it’s a Belgian show! I’m Dutch but we share a lot of things with Belgium and “elf” here is a very generic term that could, depending on prefix, suffix, diminutive etc be a lot of things. It covers anything from classic elves to pixies and more, and also overlaps with the word “fee”, thus also pulling in things like fairy godmothers and evil fairies such as Maleficent, hell it can even be expanded to just mean “sorceress”. It’s a very broad term, but basically Mia being called an elf wouldn’t be weird for Belgian audiences, it’s just awkward for the translation!

It's actually a coproduction between Germany, Italy and Canada (only the company that owns the rights is belgian). And in Germany it's similar! I actually went to look this up and found out something interesting about these words' history: The german "Fee" comes from medieval french, and in Germany it came to mean something between a sorceress and a nymph. The french "faerie"/"féerie" was adopted by late medieval England and used to desctibe the realm of the little people that Chaucer already called "elfs". During elizabethan times "faerie" and "elf" became more or less interchangable and were used this way by Shakespeare. During the 18th century, a lot of his works were translated into german, and since the word "Fee" had such a stark difference in meaning from the english "faerie", most translators used the word "Elfe" instead. This word became the most used when referring to the Little People that the english ended up calling "faeries". Only in recent years, with english and american works getting translated with "faeries" as "Feen", or Tolkien-inspired fantasy often using tall, humanoid elves, this imagery changed .

Oh boy I waited for this deep dive for so long because this show have been living in my head rent free! Let me start with the fact that I love the fairy world's portrayal being art nouveau. There are Klimt inspired designs, because YES, the patterns and the world is based off of famous Klimt paintings. As a ex-art student, when Klimt was brought up, I realized why were these designs so familiar. Also... fun fact, art nouveau is a pretty decorative style, so because of this a lot of characters wear spiraling clothing, golden jewellery and decorative hair pieces. I suppose Mia's parents were art nouveau enthusiasts.

I know the theme song by heart to this day! Season 2 was my favourite, new characters and a bully redemption arc is all it takes for me. I remember I was very upset when they changed the actress for S3, I think I also stopped watching the show after that. I have been waiting for someone to actually talk about this show. It was abut out of my age range when it came out but I still enjoyed it for what it was. Also I rewatched the first few episodes and I think the book is more like an interactive video game than an actual magical artefact? (Ignoring the fact that it literally makes your physical body disappear when you're using it) So I guess the whole "Mia is the special" thing and everyone just going with it makes more sense when you consider that her parents designed it that way. Takes a lot of the stakes out of the conflict though. (And questioning the whole "we don't know where the parents are" thing: Don't we find out early on that they're dead or am I mixing it up with another show?)

Okay I kinda headcanon Violetta as gender noncom 'cuz like, her elf colorscheme and her elf look , compared to Mia and later Sara is more androgynous, and like her arc is could be interpreted as internalized Queerphobia, at first she bullied Mia because she liked fairies (Mia is somehow Queer (Bi in my headcanon) and even though Violetta also likes Fairies (is Queer) she was raised by her mother who is not encouraging imagination and wonder (is homophobic) and when she gets into Centopia (discovers a kind Queer community) she thinks "Hey, I like this" and her home life suck no matter what and her mother manipulated her into thinking that her father doesn't want to live with her (she lied abot Violetta's dad being homophobic) is like "screw it, I'm out of closet here and this place is great" but hey THAT'S JUST a silly little headcanon of mine

Okay, the "It's just for kids" thing is NOT an excuse for lazy writing. Kids shows that have things "Just Happen" without reasons behind them lead to kids that accept things without wanting to know the reasons behind them. omg that thumbnail awakened a memory in me I totally forgot about this series! yet it definitely had a major impact on my psyche -- like you said, there are a lot of shows like this one but my fairy-fantasy daydreams were most similar to Mia & Me, now that I remember it. however I think I might have skipped past the live action later in the show because I found it so boring lol -- i only watched the first season i'm pretty sure haha.

I LOVED AND LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH!! It will always hold a special place in my heart. Really was one of my biggest comfort shows growing up, even though I really didn't like the animation change and the change of Mia's actress back then, but oh well, whatcha gonna do about it. You got a few tiny details wrong, but I can't blame you for nitpicking, I definitely choose to keep my nostalgia-glasses on. ^^ I found this show years before I heard of Winx, so I'm not comparing those two at all haha XD But I'm so glad you enjoyed and can see the good things in this show!

I remember watching this show as a kid and dropping it pretty early into season 1 just because the real life segments were boring and I had cooler things to watch. I might not have had the words for the lack I saw, but kids are smart enough to recognise its there.

I went to school in Florence Italy and was classmates with that bully girl! Some of these scenes were even filmed in my school during summer vacation! Most of the live action characters in the show are all from my school. My theater teacher was the one that casted them
