9:00 the vampires in the masquerade universe operate on mysticism.... so sunlight kills them but UV lights don’t do shit. It’s literally the mystic significance of the sun that kills the vampire. Same thing with crosses, they generally do nothing, but certain individuals strong faith can turn even the more powerful vampires away. It’s very much a “don’t think about it TOO hard” kinda thing.

World of darkness, or its newest term Cornicles of darkness Is a setting for more than just Vampire's and werewolves, there is books on Mages Hunters Promethiums (think different kinds of Frankensteins) Changelings (humans kidnapped then menially and or Sexualy enslaved and turned in to Half Fay) My fave Geist( humans who died, and made a deal with a spirit of a version of death, and came back to life) Demons (Once biomachies angels for the God Machine) now hiding on earth Mummies there are 2 others but they are meh and that is not talking about the many many minor things you can play as well Blood bathers (people who swim in blood to keep themselves young) Psychics Hedge mages stigmatas ( people who saw a bit of the God machine and was changed forever from the experience Check out the Books, you have to play them, but reading about them and the setting is amazing

Oh i like your take about scientific explanation about vampires. Here s one attempt. Vampire don t havecan heartbeat because the blood flow in their body like trees. In opposition of trees , photosynthesis disrupt thei compositions thzt s why they avoid uv and sunlight as much as possible. Also one downside is they have to hold much more blood in them than a normal human to carry enoigh nutrient to limbs and organs thzt still work. But whole digestive system is partially gone. Like a tree. That would ecplaib why they cant get normal human food, their longevity, suppression of body limits and regeneratiln ability increasexso long they are link to the ground.

Definitely play it, but as Sseth said don't play Nosferatu or Malkavian on your first try. Nosferatu is just frustrating when you're new bc you can't go anywhere normally without Masquerade breach. Malkavian has amazing dialogue, but if you haven't played it already you won't make sense of any of it, especially as your options are barely coherent ramblings of a madman... Play Tremere, Brujah or Gangrel first as they're the easiest to get a hang of. Brujah are the most vanilla, but they can do anything aside from magic. Gangrel can shape shift and a Beast form Gangrel in a Frenzy tears through enemies like tissue paper and barely takes any damage. Tremere Blood magic basically allows you to skip combat sections...

I believe one of the news reports that you can hear on the TV earlier in the game references a bizarre squid-like creature washing up on the shores of Rhode Island (Lovecraft's home state). The PC games don't touch on the cosmic stuff as much as the tabletop does, but they 100% knew what they were doing with that.

Nick If you got the Steam version i'd recommend you get the unofficial patch as Sseth recommends even though it can break some stuff because A It's adds a whole bunch of cut content B It fixes a lot of bugs including game breakers and C The game sometimes doesn't even work on certain modern systems without it. I would love to see you Stream it but take Sseth's advice don't play Malkavian or Nosfuratu first I'd recommend going what I did play and finish the game as a normal class (Brujah in my case if I remember right) then when you understand the plot play a Malkavian so you can get the full effect of the batshit insanity. Oh and one last piece of advice for the love of Caine DON'T...OPEN....IT!!!"

About the staking in the heart thing: in WoD, stabbing a vampire in the heart doesn't kill them it just sort of forces them into a state of torpor until the stake is removed again. its kind of like all the Kindred have a universal snooze button

Well, not exactly Torpor. Torpor is more like a coma, only the more powerful Elders retain any level of sensation and consciousness. Getting staked is just paralysis, you remain conscious.

Fun fact about the engine used for Vampire Bloodlines. It was built on the first generation of the source engine. The same thing that valve was developing for half-life 2 at the time. The expressiveness of the models is why they wanted to use it which gives everyone quite a bit of life to them. Most of it still holds up.

"Halloween-looking S&M gremlin" has to be one of the funniest insults I've ever heard. As to playing it: if you're in any way, shape or form interested in world-building and roleplaying where choices matter, you owe it to yourself to play it. It's one of the best games I ever played and it's criminally cheap. I don't think I met a single person that regretted playing it and I've been gaming for 20 years.

yeah just dont play malk first, they have the best dialogue but its nearly incomprehensible without playing the game with a 'normal' character first, tremere basically lets you skip the shitty combat by using blood magic but they also have a great vibe

I can confirm one thing. Having been one of the 70 000 that got this game off the shelf, it gave an experience that have not been outdone before or since. It isn't long, but if you let yourself get immersed in the story, it is honestly unbeatable.

On the topic of the hearts, being undead, and in general not working. To answer the odd lore at least surrounding this version of vampires that World of Darkness uses. 1. Vampires are 100% dead, their hearts do not beat. But, they can will their heart to beat and fake being alive for a short while. 2. The stake in the heart doesn't kill a vampire in this lore, it just paralyzes them and puts them in what is effectively a coma while being conscious and aware of the surroundings

As everybody and their Great Aunt Matilda has stated, do not play Malkavian or Nosferatu on your first run. Yes, going into the game blind as a Malkavian or Nosferatu can be a visceral experience of feeling like a crazy person or being suddenly cursed with a hideous deformity out of Greek myth, but the former can be confusing when your character is having a conversation with somebody about shit that hasn't happened yet and speaks more cryptically than the damned Riddler, and the latter is a frustrating experience because you essentially need to do a hardcore stealth run the whole way and avoid human contact beyond what is strictly necessary; good for speedrunning, but bad for a casual introduction. First-timers should play Brujah, Tremere, Ventrue, or Toreador. Each one has a set of options geared towards combat or social interactions, with Brujah and Tremere being more combat oriented with a touch of social skills and Toreador and Ventrue being more social oriented. Malkavians and Nosferatu, funnily enough, are both stealth oriented, with Malkavians favoring social interaction at the expense of being weaker in a fight and Nosferatu foregoing basically all normal social interaction in exchange for being able to brawl with the best of them. Gangrel, meanwhile, are all about combat and have no innate social or stealth abilities, so they're good for just beating the shit out of everything.

They used the Source engine and it sort of fucked them over because Valve stated they have to be first one to release with their engine so the game was tied to when Valve releases. Not to mention the engine wasn't fully developed and contacting Valve and get help was a bit of a pain. So Bloodlines uses one of the oldest varaint of the engine that is currently released.
