I watched through the entire series a few years ago. People get this idea that it’s all about romance and that it’s like Twilight, when in reality it’s more like Blade or Vampire: The Masquerade. There is a lot of lore, interesting characters, obscene violence, and dark humor.

Twilight is unique in their approach of vampires. So much so that I would like it better if they didn't used the word "vampire" at all. Vampire the Masquerade do complicates things for those who intend to make a new Vampire Based Setting, I think. Because they do organized a pretty dense setting, more consistent than most. Being an RPG setting they had to have rules, balance between player characters, and they also needed to make things more consistent than any other media has to. Because players would be putting themselves in the point of view of vampires, and walking around. Trying to explore all aspects of vampire conditions. Asking questions, and noticing when something don't make sense. The vampire dream of turn all humans into vampires, or kill all humans, can't fly in a setting like that (for instance). And once you realize it can't fly, becomes impossible not to think about that every time some vampire suggests something like that in another setting. Is easy enough to not use the same premisses Vampire the Masquerade uses, change the rules of vampirism. But every change asks for adjustments and has implications. The demand for a higher level of internal consistency accompanies the player of Vampire the Masquerade to every setting that includes vampires, I suspect. Fever Dream is a rare case of original vampire setting that reaches this expectation, I think.

In the books all animals have a were counterpart. Many are extinct, but if memory serves ( have not read any of these in at least 6 or 7 years) there are at least one were-bat , tiger, and a fox The fox is in the show, but they changed her to a wolf. Also other species are elves, and demons. Sookie is only psychic because a demon thought she was special and gave the power to her. She was not born with it and it's not a fae thing.

It was probably too expensive to introduce Quinn - using live tigers and cgi would have cost a small fortune, I'd expect. Such a shame - he was a great character in the books and it would have been cool to see him in the tv show. There are also dwarves (Dr Ludwig?) and goblins (the bouncer at Russell Edgington's nightclub) - pretty much any celtic creature was covered by the umbrella of Fae in the southern vampire universe.

Sookie didn't get her power from a demon. Her telepathy (she's not phsycic) is specifically from her fae heritage. From her grandfather the fae prince, and her great grandfather the fae king. She was born with it. Jason got a charisma buff, for lack of a better term, from his fae heritage. It's why he's so popular with the ladies (and men). I don't remember a werebat, but there was a wereowl. And I don't remember any actual demons in the books. Her great grandfather being the fae king makes me think he's daoine sidhe specifically, I'd assume of the Seelie court, but this is never clearly explained. I don't remember elves in the books either. My last re-read was just last year around this time.

@@athenahaga there are two part demons. The Lawyer Desmond Cataliades, and his niece Diantha. I had to look it up to get their names right , and turns out we are both right and both wrong in part. The tela pathic (sorry for calling them psycho) powers do come from demons, but was not given directly to Sookie. Desmond gave a thimble of his blood to Adele and Fintan. Barry the Bell boy is Desmond's descendant, so shares the telepathy. The character I thought was a werebat is probably the wereowl. I only remember being fairly sure there was a flying were that wasn't a shifter.

When I was a little kid I remember there were a few childrens books at my dentists office that explained what all the magical races used in the Southern Vampire Mysteries. The illustrations reminded me of the Addams Family cartoons and I always thought they were related to books like Faeries and the nook of Gnomes and the like. I wish I could locate them. I have no real point of reference.

Vampires can feed on Werewolves as seen when Jessica fed on a Werewolf after been attacked by Russell Edginton, she chased after him and once caught, she fed on the Werewolf, their blood has no nutrition from it, but still can ingest it.

Towards the end of the video, I gotta thank you for what you said about komodo dragon venom. I had not been informed of the update that they do, indeed, have venom, as opposed to the long-held belief that their mouths were so bacteria-ridden that it caused deep infection on a very short timetable. I enjoyed my learning excursion, thank you.

Maryanne was my favorite throughout the show (I’m happy anytime Dionysus gets attention in a popular show). And yes her ending was weak. I get what the idea was, that she could only die if she believed she could die. But she really didn’t consider for a second, “Hey you know how I’m the greatest enemy to that one guy who can turn into any animal? Maybe I should be extra cautious around animals that can kill me”? 🤷‍♂️

They are hands down THEE best version of all vampires in any series or movies, keeping the same lore from bram stoker Dracula so they feel and even look like true vampires which is why I fell in love with that series when it first aired. Great video! Thanks for putting so much time and effort into this! Just one thing. Jason Stackhouse is normal in the show. The faeri gene skipped him according to his faeri grand daddy (Season 6). He comes to realize he uses intimacy to cope with losses in his life ( Season 5). It started with his highschool teacher.

In the book, he has fae qualities. But no powers. Which is why he's so attractive to beings. Later on he actually does become a were panther. Married Crystal because she's pregnant and is very depressed. I'm so glad they changed all that in the show

Great video! I loved the show (s1 to s6 anyway) when it was on. S2 to s4 was the peak imo). Maryann and Marnie were badass lol. I still wish they had found out more about Maryann in the show, could have at least hinted that her name in the past was Callisto, but oh well, I should be happy she got expanded to the main antagonist of S2 anyway lol. Was the first time the show really deviated from the books in a major way.

Man, I really felt old when you said you were used to werewolves being stronger than vampires because you grew up on Underworld. I'm 49 and I'm from the world where vampires would kick the shite outta werewolves. I actually remember seeing the first Underworld in the theater and the one thing I didn't like was how weak the vampires were. Until that exact movie it was always vampires over werewolves. But, like you, I grew up loving both.

Maybe because Charlaine Harris wanted to separate herself from what she based his books on, Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles and Mayfair Witch Series, and wow she had an impact, so much that Anne Rice changed the lore of her own vampires, before Harris, Rice vampires were asexual, they couldn't have sex or procreate, in the last book that she wrote before she die, The Prince Lestat, vampire could fully have sex after consuming blood and even reproduce after consuming blood and having their bodies "warm", but Anne Rice didn't jumped in the "vampires can have sex" bandwagon, but she wrote it by stages, is ironically that when her vampires finally could have sex, she die.

I agree. I would have liked the series more without the humans doing magic. The premisse of vampires "dropping the masquerade" is too strong by itself. My impression is that it would develop way better if they had kept the focus in vampires, and their interaction with humans. Their vampire society is way too simplistic, considering this. If they had to have werewolves, shapeshifters, and other werebeasts, then I would have preferred to see those different species and cultures by the eyes of hybrids, mostly. A shapeshifter-vampire, a werewolf-vampire, etc. How every other faerie don't gets changed into a vampire, considering how advantageous it is for their specie? Should be a fase in life for them: "you are almost 700 years old, have you marked your transformation into vampire already? Who is going to be your maker?" The characters are great, and until a given point in the story I love the plot. Still, to watch it was a bit frustrating. Because I was expecting more from the core premisse of true blood.

I laughed as I was about to write how I hate the wolf form trope for werewolves and then you say how you love it and know well how other might not. I as well have grown up watching underworld, so a human/wolf hybrid transformation is my preferred werewolves in shows and any for of media. I must say that the werewolf transformation from HP and the prisoner of Azkaban is by far the one that genuinely scared me(I guess it's cuz I saw it very young)

The fact that Mary Anne didn't know about Fae is strange to me. She is older than all the other species and isn't harmed by them so she'd probably be aware of not only the Fae, but how they operate and that they have hidden pockets to hide in. I wonder if she got into one of these and got them all on her side how things would go.

Love the content definitely I'm a fan of True Blood there are some things regarding makers that are questionable for instance Pam's maker let her go a long time physically telling her he still seems quite controlling regarding her the same thing can be said for bill and his maker she released him yet she's still obviously bat s*** crazy very much controlling over him when she really tries to assert her dominance again it's a little shaky but then again now that I think about it the older vampires are supposed to be stronger than the younger ones so perhaps that ties into it too

Tbh, I felt the whole fairy thing was kind of a cop out, yeah it was interesting but was not necessary for the plot and it allowed dumb things to happen, didn’t care for it. Since you mentioned the book you should have mentioned that in the books it is possible to convert a human into a a shifter as Jason did actually become a werepanther for a while. You should also mention that in the book Jasons faery side is active and that his power is ti be alluring and irresistible to any woman that is not related to him.l which they alluded to on the show kinda

I would be curious to see an interview with the author, because you had stated at one point, perhaps were panthers and wolves came from a genetic mutation in shifters/skinwalkers, however after learning about the concept of Jason from the books, another possibility springs to mind that seems like it'd prefectly fir the cannon, perhaps where pathers, and wolves, and possibly others that we dont know of, gained there ability by being attacked by shifters in there panther form or wolf form, and then over time, as a half wolf, or half panther may find soliderity in another person who is half of the same creature as them, wolf, pather, or otherwise, and they mate, it'd lead to two halfs making one whole.
