My only complaint is the Cardinal's logic. You would think the origin and existence of vampires would be enough proof that the afterlife does exist.
@APackOfHungryGhosts7 ай бұрын
It's his faith in God that's slipped away. At one point he says "In all my years of prayer and service, I've never seen any miracles, he's shown me no signs." Basically, the cardinal is nearing old age, and becoming fearful of death, his belief in God and the afterlife are shaken... but while he doesn't have proof of God, or the afterlife, he knows for a fact that evil is real and the only way to escape death is the immortality a vampire enjoys. It's that old adage "If you can't beat them, join them."
@diegobarron16907 ай бұрын
And if his fate falters maybe he is afraid of going to hell instead
@gottfriedosterbach39076 ай бұрын
It doesn't prove an afterlife or that any element of the religion is true. It proves that some form of supernatural 'evil' is real. It proves that there is an unknown supernatural and some magic exists. It doesn't confirm anyones beliefs are correct. There is no evidence any exorcism ritual actually suceeded, no proof of divine, crosses don't work, and priests die like flies.
@Aria-Invictus5 ай бұрын
that would be an equivocation fallacy. because most people when they talk about the afterlife they really mean a place that your spirit goes to live on forever. whereas the idea of Resurrection is simply temporary. and so in this sense there's a distinction between the afterlife and a resurrection. the idea of a vampire would only mean that Resurrection is possible not that an afterlife exists.

The biggest sin this movie commits is missing the entire point of the book. That there is no magic messianic fix. No first one, last one, destiny one. These guys are just holding back the tide. There is a great scene where Jack eulogizes the team that got wiped out. He laments how he has to go and recruit good, brave hero types, knowing they'll only live a few years before falling to these monsters, and then Jack will have to pick up and find more brave heroes to sign up to die brutally sooner than later. That is what makes the story so good, so poignant. And there is a nobility in knowing this, and carrying on anyway. This is probably the only 90's movie I hope gets remade.... correctly.

I always pictured Jack being portrayed by Clancy Brown as he looked in the 80's. Instead we got mini-Me with a plastic/fibreglass crossbow. I wanted to see the 400 year old, barely able to handle, arbelest that fired bolts the thickness of pool cues with double-sided barbs that crunched as it entered a vampire body.

The novel was WAY better than the movie. John Carpenter said back in 1998 that his original vision for the movie was to be somewhat closer to the novel, including having the second half of the movie take place in a city, not just the desert. But according to Carpenter, the studio made the decision to slash his budget and filming schedule in half, after he had already started filming. So he was forced to quickly rewrite the script and find cheaper shooting locations to compensate. It's truly a shame, because the novel could easily be adapted to a movie as is, with no changes and be awesome.

Great video, as always. I don't think that Father Valek was ever possessed. I took it as though he was accused of being possessed and had the experimental exorcism used on him, but it went wrong because he WASNT possessed. So, instead of getting rid of the demons, it just killed his body and left his soul in an undead husk. Also, Valek (or Valac or Valik) is a demon listed in grimoire "The Lesser Key of Solomon" and was the VERY LOOSE basis for the lead demon in "The Nun"

I always wanted a side story sequel following the Padre. An accompanying priest that has not only hunted but hunted several master vampires and the original at the same time. While usually the priest just stands outside and prays. It could be some years down the road with Padre as the grizzled veteran mentoring less experienced hunters and maybe even going in himself to show how it’s done now and again.

Loved this video and LOVE this movie. By far one of the coolest and somewhat scariest vampire movies of its time. Thank you for breaking it down, would love to see a deep dive between the movie and book, I remember the book being a bit more intense, and that's saying a lot considering the movie. 🧛♂️

"This Felix is no other Felix. This Jack Crow is no other Jack Crow." I loved this book and Armor, I just wish Steakley had written more books.

Not to be a broken record, but Cogan this really was incredibly well done. Easily the most information (fictional universe info, not the lenses Carpenter used) I have ever encountered for this film 👍 And yes, you did answer some things I have wondered about for decades, now....I wonder if that novel is still in print 🤔

I can see why earing could slow the transformation process. Vampirism tends to include an unquenchable "thirst", so it's probably best if you don't help that along.

In some lore, decapitation was supposed to work because it meant the vampire would not be able to feed. Therefore, it would starve to death.

I always loved this movie with it's classic Carpenter affectations. James Woods really nailed the role and made the movie so much more entertaining.

John Steakley is a bit unsung. He wrote another book, Armor, which was fantastic, but huge (1200-ish pages) about a war between humans in mech suits ( kind of) and a menacing race of space-dwelling critters they called ‘ants’. There’s time travel, court intrigue, denial of inherited monarchy, and probably Jack’s progenitor/descendant/alternate reality equivalent, named Felix. It’s like starship troopers X battlefield earth X edge of tomorrow. It’s a fantastic read if you can find it anywhere, can’t recommend it enough

Can you do a video of the movie Cursed 2005 about its story werewolves and everything? It might take you a little while to find it since it is so old but you will see it will be worth it. Great video dude👏👏👏

This is an absolute belter of a film and the soundtrack is incredible. Carpenter directed not just the film but also composed the music score. Super talented man.

Though the fictional vampire may be able to fly, one must understand, when traversing miles, a vampire would likely appreciate saving energy, which equals blood consumed...so, him riding the train makes good sense.

An interesting deep cut that would fit with your channel is a movie from 1983 based on a book by F. Paul Wilson called 'The Keep'. The special effects definitely look dated but the story is still good. There are several well known actors in it such as Scott Glenn, Gabriel Byrne and Ian McKellen, I'm not going to go into the plot in case you decide to watch it but in my humble opinion it is definitely worth considering. I've seen it five or six times and can still find new things, or things I forgot, every time.

Read the book as a kid then saw the movie then around 2016 was able to get a copy of the book on sale. Liked how the Vatican sponsored the team of hunters that were former athletes,fighters etc. Jack Crow himself was described as being big and muscular and ornery. I also liked how the master was basically " destroyed" in the book. James Woods take on Jack Crow was the best part of the movie for me.
@Mar-uo2bj4 ай бұрын
Agreed. James Woods brought the novel character's utter contempt for the Vatican to life in the film.

In the book they have chainmail with halogen crosses on the chest that keep vamps at bay, so the movie lore differs a bit. I read it in '93-ish as a kid, loved it at the time. Anyone else read it? You out there, Nate?
