After seeing "Let Me In" I learned of the original Swedish film it was based upon and from there I learned of the book. Let me tell you, as good as "Let the Right One in" is, it barely scratches the surface of what is in the book. I love both movies but of course the Swedish version is superior but the book was incredible.

I’m glad in the original the darker themes are addressed compared to the American remake which kinda covers them up. When I watched the remake I was very perplexed about why a grown man was in some strange relationship with a child. I like the more romantic and not so creepy version of it in the remake but the original has given some closure.
@FuzzyKittenBoots
@FuzzyKittenBoots Жыл бұрын
I think the original is more romantic. Only people who watched the remake seem to believe that Oscar is just going to be a new 'handler' for Eli and the director just decided that Eli was bad? Either not understanding the source material or just wanting to make his own thing which, in my opinion, was not the right choice.
@alexarias5717

How was it more romantic in the remake when the grown man in the remake was being forced to serve the vampire girl lol
@rickfromhell
@rickfromhell Жыл бұрын
In the American version, I'm pretty sure the older man presumed to be her father in the beginning was rewritten to have been around Oscar's age when Eli met him. Maybe I just assumed that? From what I took away, he basically grew up from around the age of 12 taking care of her, and so their shared history, and the fact that it was all he knew at that point kept him bonded to her for as long as it did. Even in the remake, his character was purposefully portrayed more as means of survival than a companion. There was no romance to be found for me in either version, just the same sad story of codependence, manipulation, and trauma-based companionship.

Something that always fascinated me about one of the editions of the novel is that the English cover made by the publisher "Text Publishing" consists of a photo of a naked child lying peacefully in a snowy landscape under a luminous sky. I like to think that said cover represents Eli / Elias dreaming about his humanity while he sleeps submerged in the bathtub full of blood.

It is completely made clear in the book that Eli genuinely has the mentality of a 12-year-old kid. The greatest proof of this is the fact that she acquires a more emotional and childish attitude as she becomes more and more intimate with Oskar, showing enormous fun while playing with him. In fact, this change in attitude provokes jealousy in Hakan, who can't bear to see how his "angel" goes from showing the personality of a mature and wise being to that of a spoiled girl who gets angry when her father shows no interest in playing with her.

In the movie it is ambiguous, which I think is one of the film's many strengths. You are left wondering whether she really feels for Oskar, or if she's just leading him along, like she did her old familiar. Is Oskar that guy's replacement, or are they really in love? If you want to know what the author thought, the answer is in his works. You might be surprised!
@filmmakerdreamstudios
@filmmakerdreamstudios 7 ай бұрын
When you read the book, Eli IS a child. Ambiguity aside, the film adaptation made the mistake of making Hakan too sympathetic. The film justifies his paedophilia. In the book, Hakan is a real paedophile who has only been with Eli for a few months and is constantly trying to force her to have sex. At one point, he even tries to rape her. Eli's relationship with Oskar is supposed to be the direct opposite. It's pure and sexless. Oskar helps Eli stay true to herself and the child she's inside. For this reason, author John Lindqvist hated the 'Eli grooms Oskar" theory so much that he even wrote a sequel, Let the Old Dreams Die, in which it's confirmed that Eli turned Oskar into a vampire and the two are still together 30 years later. So the novel at least confirms that they loved each other. But there's more to talk about with the films, which is a little problematic for the reasons mentioned above.

Not really he Eli is stuck at the age of 12, so a friendship is not impossible to imagine, with a child of the same age. Also the feeling of liking affection and love do not seem to be beyond the vampires portrayed, she shows remorse at killing and affection for her familiar. Why not love, we love our pets some times passionately, but we could eat them if we were desperate.

Eli has the picture of Hackon when he was just a 12 year old boy. So Oscar is just another child in her plot to have familiars get blood for her. Hackon is not the first boy to become an old person she has discarded for another younger boy to replace the previous Familiar. The “gifts” she is “given” like the egg puzzle is because she can hypnotize people to be sympathetic to her. So she is either accidentally or intentionally charming people like Hackon and Oscar to become her familiar.
@shashikant3150
@shashikant3150 Жыл бұрын
The American remake polluted the purity of the relationship between Eli and Oskar. Hakan was an oldman, homeless, alcoholic and suffering from pedophilia when Eli met him first time. Eli suported him financially and he fell in love with him/her because he was a pedophile. He got ready to become caretaker of her. Eli never loved him. Whenever he tried to sleep with her, she refused to do so. But on the other hand, Eli and Oskar became true friends and their bonding grew stronger over time. After leaving Blackberge Eli turned Oskar into vampire. The photograph of young Hakan was only shown in the American remake. In real story, no such a photograph exists.

That is just in the American version. In the book Eli really does love and care for Oskar, and they never intended to make Oskar their handler. In the sequel short story, Eli turned Oskar and they are implied to still be traveling together (as a couple). Also Eli had only known Hakan for either a few months or about a year or so (he was a grown adult), so there was no hypnotizing or grooming in that instance. Hakan is just a perv that wanted to be close to Eli.

I thought it was obvious she was grooming him to be her familiar? The guy she comes with is incompetent and she knows this. He's getting older and weaker. Less able to fullfil his duties She's looking for his replacement. There is a scene where he finds the history of her familiars. She's done this before. Using familiars is a good strategy to stay hidden. She doesn't seem able to control her self if she is the one making the kills. She even leaves victims alive, something the familiars won't do More likely something will be traced back to her. The familiars act with more discretion and were conned into going great lengths to sacrifice themselves to protect her existence

As a rule I have never really been interested in vampire films, as they don’t really appeal to me. Until 2008 !! Wow what a stunning film ( LET THE RIGHT ONE IN ) is. It was so very different to what I actually expected, this film was beautifully made . This film is so haunting and delicately made and the acting from the entire cast especially the children were fantastic!! Which definitely deserves 98 % from rotten tomatoes. What I will say is that I feel there was no need for an American version 2yrs later , this remake was not needed and doesn’t even come close the the original Swedish movie. I can’t praise this film enough and personally would ask people to give this film a chance even though it has sub titles , I have watched this film on numerous times and it has certainly grown on me. The "Be like me" comment was not encouragement, but Eli's plea for Oskar to see things from her perspective, and shows him that his violence at their initial meeting was misguided. What a great movie. The only weakness in my opinion was the way the pool scene at the end was filmed. It’s just me maybe ( I’m picky and notice these things ) but the were several improbabilities or impossibilities there

I saw this amazing beautiful vampire movie when it first year it came out and still in love with it 👍❤just so good and now years later I'm reading the book plus the two short stories that have come out so I'm hopeful one day that John Ajvide Lindqvist will write a full novel of Eli and Oskar some day plus your video about this awesome vampire romantic tale was great thank you ❤🦇

This is by far one of the most unique and dark movies ive ever seen, but in a good way. That would be amazing if he wrote another book telling what happened in the future. also thanks for joining as a member!

I’ve seen a series from Epix that reminded me of this, forgot the name but it was pretty good and recent. Its about a town where a family got stranded, there the night fall is feared due to beings like this, they can’t enter your home if not invited.

I've watched this a few times. The American version doesn't come close the Swedish version. The book is good and goes into more detail than the movie does.

I think I have only seen the english version in which the old man was actually a boy she previously befriended and that his use was just running out because he got bad at the killing. So she needed a new familiar which leaves the whole relationship in serious doubt. fascinating that in the original story it was a castrated boy, given the vampires are immortal that vampire who did it may have been from a time they did that more often to keep a boys voice or looks. Though I don't know why you'd do that to a vampire as he was never going to grow up anyway.

I assume they probably castrated him before he turned into a vampire.

I'm dead serious when I say that you should do a video on Twilight. You always talk about the facts of the vampires in whatever story you're covering and I truly do think that your takes on those vampires would be insightful, informative, and interesting. Or you could always save that for April Fool's Day next year!

I think the reason Eli smelled bad when she first met Oskar was simply because she was dirty, you can see her hair is all gross and greasy. The next time they meet you can see her hair looks way cleaner, implying she's washed

My take was different. To me the familiars are friendless bullied children that fall in love w eli. Eli gravitates towards their type for need and companionship, so the real affection isnt just transactional. This story reimagines familiars, not simply hypnotized slaves, but lonely souls who fall in love... and vampires having a need for companionship and a caretaker.. more melancholy than horror. The American version is drawn-out straight lines that are more exposition than discovery failing to garner quite the dreariness of a Swedish winter and casually tossing in a shot of gratuitous nudity for some unknown reason. Just a lesser imitation in pacing and complexity.

I think the smelling part has a darker connotation. In times of war when women knew there was a good chance that they would be raped they would make themselves as unappealing as possible and part of if is not bathing so you smell. I think her not bathing was a way to keep hakkan away from his/her booty
