Should you buy Vampyr in 2023?
Vampyr is a good example of the AA standard. There can be some glaring weak points I've highlighted in the video, but there can also be some undeniable charm and authenticity to them, and in this case, the story of Vampyr alone is worth it.
Add to that the vast amount of branching dialogue choices, a skill tree that’s totally exclusive to the world of vampires, a violent string based soundtrack worthy of any AAA title and Vampyr is a game that's totally worth playing.

This game badly needs a sequel that is much more open, not crazy open but a lot more open with more movement capabilities and just freedom that would be the perfect vampire game

This seemed open enough for me. But it could have been a little larger. Like maybe if they did a sequel they could open some areas outside the city, like the Moors of England. They're always creepy at night. And maybe put a town or two out there like in American Werewolf In London with those creepy superstitious people at the Slaughtered Lamb(bar).... But still try to keep it back in these earlier times. Like maybe the 30's or something. That would take it 20yrs past the first game.

Intresting to know, Vampyr can be finished without hurting any civilians, which the game recognises by granting you the "Not Even Once" achievement.

At the risk of sounding sarcastic, how is that a satisfying reward to painstakingly play without victims? This is what I hate about modern gaming, that pundits are happy about digital achievements that are completely meaningless and can be churned out by summer workers and interns in the gaming industry. We need to feel an actual weight of our actions in such games instead of unlocking lackluster achievement "rewards" Such things sound like "pride and accomplishment" from idiots like Andrew Wilson!

Spot on review! I legit loved Vampyr, although I'll admit the combat is its weakest point. The moral choices you have to make are meaningful and the atmosphere in a ravaged London is top notch. The soundtrack alone in Pembroke Hopsital always puts me in a melancholy mood. The map is a bit weird. I think they tried to do a From Software map design but definitely didn't nail it. It runs well at 60fps on PS5. Will have to return to it sometime. I just finished Kena: Bridge of Spirits and am in the middle of Inscryption. What a game!

Nice! Kena was an unreal achievement for Ember Labs debut title. Vampyr deserves a sequel. It might not be perfect but Don’t Nod were onto something here. A sequel could give them a chance to hone their craft and refine the weak parts of Vampyr. Cheers for watching Zane!

I think this game is in my top 10 of all time. Decent combat, great lore and storytelling. Decisions that matter, survival components such as keeping citizens healthy to keep the district going. Its only downside is that it can be hard to find out how to get places your first playthrough.

I was disappointed with this game.. it turns out that everything cool you can do would mean you have to kill people ....but if you do that you can't complete quests etc.... The whole game is created around this weird MORAL DILEMMA thing that in order to be strong you have to kill but if you kill you actually make things worse in some sense ... I don't know how to explain it but it has a similar stupid mORAL system like METRO EXODUS has.

I love Vampyr. The voice actor for Jonathan is a national treasure! I would love to see Vampyr 2, with more emphasis on a larger world, continued story which transitions into new characters and challenges.

Vampyr is hands down one of the best games I've played! Its very underrated and more people need to play it.. its better than some AAA games even lol

I played this right before rdr2 in 2018, and the honor system (in rdr2) was a bit disappointing when I had gotten used to the Vampyr system. Rdr2 is an absolutely fantastic game, but it's so easy to change your reputation it feels almost meaningless. I still think rdr2 is the better game, but Vampyr actually made me feel conflicted about certain actions and sometimes I thought I was doing the right thing but I wasn't. While rdr2 made me care for the characters through how real they felt, while Vampyr made me feel responsible for them through knowing how much of an impact my actions might have for their lives. It's just sad to think what could be possible for AAA companies to achieve if it wasn't about making maximum profit. Though I also think having a limited budget is good for creativity and it makes me appreciate what indie and AA studios manage to put out.

You hit the nail on the head. I love gaming but have a very short attention span. AAA games look beautiful but none keep me engaged because too much is going on. I lose interest quick. Adhd and a tbi (corwbar into my frontallobe) ruined me. ialways end up loving AA so much more.

I remember how played this game, it was classic videogame experience, you have the game and you play it, it's not buggy, has interesting decisions and great bosses. I played on hard mode and was just shoked when after several "donations" in some districts all the population just got eaten by monsters and I lost precious exp, still I loved the story and ofc reloading after being kicked by the bosses, the ending is perfect for that game imo, sad and melancholic. Solid 7.5/10

I just did my final project in my Game Scoring class analyzing Olivier Deriviere's score to this game. Genuinely a masterful score that doesn't get enough praise in my opinion. So glad that this game is still being talked about, it's one of my absolute favorites!

I spent ages in Vampyr’s main menu screen just basking in the violins ambience before I even started! Such a good soundtrack.

I miss double AA games so much!! There was so much creativity on display and on the best years of AA games there was almost no separation made between AAA and AA as long as thee games were good many of our favorites games were in fact AA but we thought back then that they were AAA the most recent AA that i fall in love with was Evil west and the shadow warrior trilogy reboot ppl dont even realiza that one of the best gsme ever ( time spliters) was a AA title publish by a AAA company EA! I want a revival so bad because the truth is that this games was dripping with soul and love! Spec ops the line was another AA game that ppl though was triple A and back then the AA games were in such strong position that almost weekly they make the cover of the most prestigius video game magazines they put banger after banger and of of course the AAA machine get sick of the AA shenanigans and destroy the balance by buying them off... in regards of vampyr is really good deeply flaw but deeply good to! Idk why Dotknot havent do a sequel or more AAs games like this one is like everyone is scared to take any kind of risk and is a damn shame!! Btw sorry for my awful English and grammar is not my native language

I completely agree that AA games are where it's at. I finally grabbed this one on sale a few months ago, haven't really dug into it yet though.

Good review. I've been playing through this one and it's good but not perfect. The story and world building is engaging but sometimes it's tiresome having the game come to a halt for an hour at a time whilst you explore dialogue options and have to heal lots of Npcs. I like the combat as it keeps you on your toes, but you have to invest in stamina a lot if you don't want to get stuck at a pivotal moment. Though maybe that's because I've been going for cudgels and Mace's, which is another issue, you have a ton of different offensive and defensive ability options but I've not found them worth the huge expense, why bother when I can get away with smacking enemies with a big stick, biting them, rinse and repeat? Unless I get cornered I rarely have an issue. Its not the most balanced game. Also although it's fun to see more fights breaking out in the streets, it still could have benefitted from fast travel, since winding paths with dead ends are common and it can take forever to go back and forth in the deceptively small map. Still, a decent title, maybe a 7/10.

I forgot to mention the CRASHING. This thing froze about a dozen times in the run, usually at the start of fights vs the priwen guard for some reason. Auto saving means this is just slightly annoying, but be wary

Because of your description I just realized that AA games are my absolute favorite. AAA have too much to do and are often overwhelming and Indie games I feel like leave me needing morning. As for Vampyr, I'm on my first major playthrough as a pacifist which makes the game inherently harder because you don't kill Citizens but gives it a nice role playing aspect (I feel it fits Jonathan's character) and you have to really think about how you make your build. The trophy at the end is a bonus too. Overall I love this game and it is the perfect game for me

I remember when this first came on to the gamepass and I wanted something to play and thought a vampire game seems different for me. Little did I know the addiction I had for this! Something that wasn’t over done, wasn’t filled with confusing gameplay or story. I love the progression system as you progress to become stronger and the enemies follow you through that progression that still gives you a challenging fight. The fact you can choose to technically to be a good or a bad vampire is truly a great touch! Multiple playthroughs is always a top game. This game is now in my top 10 favourite games to play and was the first game I purchased after it was removed from the Gamepass and only 3 games I’ve ever done that with. Hopefully to see more of this genre in future as it really is an amazing game that needs more of a bigger future title.

Vampyr is one of my favourite games. One thing i didn't like is the fact that you can see some chests being out of reach and when you eat the npc you thought had the key to reach it, they give you nothing. I badly want a sequel and i would love if it was made like the recent Deus Ex games where you can explore more

Great review. The video is quite aligned with the narrative. But you miss out the part when you mentioned, path being blocked. And also the part when you said some ledges cannot be reached. They are not aligned with the video. So you almost nail it there.

I'm downloading this off of PS Plus Premium/Extra right now. Right in time for Fall with October and Halloween right around the corner. I love games like this at this time of year. And this is honestly one of the better atmospheric type horror games that I've played, and considering the fact that it was AA I was quite surprised at how good it really was. I had a lot of fun going around the city trying to solve all the problems at night, and occasionally taking a drink. And the gothic architecture of earlier London was a perfect setting for this. I hope if they decide to do a sequel that they open the world up just a tiny bit more though. Like maybe let you go outside the city into a setting like The Moors. They always creeped me out at night, like in American Werewolf In London. Maybe rven put a few small towns out there and a bar full of superstitious folks like the Slaughtered Lamb. 😂 That would be awesome.

I believe the no fast travel was more to form a relationship between the player and the districts. Learning where people live so you can heal them or see them for information is a big part of the game.

i had hard to get into this game about 1 year ago(but now when i finaly got to sit down n start it it was just great). I would recomend to use your fastest hdd/ssd or nvme for this game because it makes game better due to alot of loading(even if its short its a bit less then fun).. Looks great story is more then good controls are ok(could have been better,but not by much i think) Would i recomend this game(yes if u want to play something else after u tired of the a.c series or witcher+rdr2+cyberpunk2077 this is when this game just works so so so good for a night time of gaming) Thanks 4 video just great

I really liked this game , interesting story , characters. The combat and xp needed to level up .... Yeah could be better , if you decide to play pacifist or vegan , its basically hard mode with less xp to gain abilities. And the music oh man the music, its so gooood! Rhe spotify album isnt complete , theres a KZbin video with the extracted ost . I really like the militaristic and tecno electro mix of some songs

Haven't played this for years I really enjoyed it. first time around got stuck onthe first boss last time it's not up there with aaa titles but as a cheap easy to play get into game it's pretty solid and immersive gd game

Just a tip for future reviews, get to the point sooner and less "memes". Most of us came here to see if the games worth it, not sit through dialogue and attempts at being funny. Not even trying to hate, just the truth.

It's a lit game forsure. Even tho it's dialogue heavy it's fuckin fantastic, the only game I've actually enjoyed with dialogue like this, i mean i skip some small stuff for certain people and beyond all the chatting the music the atmosphere the colors and other graphical detail are phenomenal every where you go and during what you do, like after having discussions with citizens and their circle and getting all the hints and them to good health, it really gives you the excitement of embracing them knowing you just maxed out your exp gain for them, and then then music plays afterwards and it all plays a part in giving you the feeling you really just did that 😮.

This is absolutely a hidden gem of a game. It's just such a well rounded, polished, atmospheric and thought-provoking of a game with some very interesting backstories, memorable side characters, and this game actually makes you feel emotions for the NPC as it allows you the freedom to do what you wish with them, it's possibly one of my favorite games of all time. I wish they got a sequel to improve on the first one.

I love Vampyr and it's moody dark atmosphere. Right now I love AA games more then AAA games. criminally underrated game. the story and atmosphere were amazing, and the music and voice acting, especially of jonathan deserved an award. it's unbelievable dontnod went out of its comfort zone and made something so different only 3 years after life is strange. i hope the runours of a sequel are true

Games like this interest but intimidate me. I always want to make the best choice, and there's that gamer disease of wanting to find all the outcomes of all dialogue choices for all characters. It seems like a lot if I don't want to be playing it for the next 5 years.

It really doesn't matter that much unless you plan to kill that npc so you would get whatever the maximum experience yield is for killing them by getting all their hints. If it's that big a deal there are online resources that you could follow along with to get every hint for every npc in the game as well. The real problem was the dev team not having simple manual saves in this game. That's fine to want to emulate all the AAA games with autosaves and crap but it's also nice to have a way to manually save games for backups and other reasons.

My advice is play it if you have ps plus extra or nothing to play or get it as a present. One thing rubbed me wrong is you have to keep good amount of balance between lvling up and health status of streets if you want humans to live as much as you can. For exp; I killed the half npcs of streets,I lvled up and whole streets doomed and the worst part is no manual save. So be warned. Sorry this was long writing btw😅

Not a big deal if you have a decent pc and a SSD. It's when you first boot the game up and are trying to get to the loading the save file part that seems to take forever. I'm not sure what's going on there if it's unpacking compressed texture archives or what but it takes awhile.

I see why people liked this game but I agree with the combat. But when it came to the character stories, I kept trying to find hints with citizens and when you fail you lose that permanently It didn't really resonate with me I thought why should I even make the choice if you're going to punish me for it then when you try to talk to the oldest patient in the hospital It wouldn't let me was so frustrating I eventually quit. I think the idea of unlocking the story through the NPC's is soooo cool and I wanted to love it so badly, but I just can't agree but hey it's fine if you like it, you like it.

I loved the story and combat and everything thogh 2 or 3 times i got frustrated because i was stuck getting killed because my first run i killed no citicens so you have to git gud. But after Acuiring the true dragonbane i loved all fighting encounters

I have to be honest, this is one of the few RPG's that I've played were playing as a bad guy filled me with regret. I got so immersed into the world and the people, that when i killed a character i liked, It made me pause. I might just be a bit of a softie when it comes to games like these, but I highly recommend this game!

Just started it. It’s very good but performance is mit great. Playing on ROG Ally. It’s at 40FPS 1080p with mixed medium / high setting but just using 18W instead of 30W available meaning it’s not well optimized because it is t using resources it COULD. But besides, story is nice. Combat is ok‘ish.

Well you manage to sell the game to me (Steam does actually for about 12$). I loved State of decay and it was a 30$ game that I really enjoyed. Triple A nowadays are big cash grab with little (half) content.

I loved the game in the first playthrough when I killed everyone but when I decided to not kill anyone on my second playthrough I realized how stupid level progression is. You basically suck blood out of the enemies and nothing happens, but when you do the same to an "innocent" person, you gain shitton of xp. Which would be fine, but why does your level have an impact on everything like pistols and melee weapons? It just doesn't make sense.

Perhaps it's just my opinion, but I've enjoined every part of this game, except the bad optimisation on my GPU. The plot is magnificent, the combat is great, not hard as souls like, not easy as hack and slash a perfect mix. The graphics for the time were good.

You're right, the game is very hard if you want to play as a doctor. But if you actually feed on some of the npcs it becomes pretty balanced. I actually did a playthrough eating everyone and afterwards it was pretty easy

@@argirisrousis I know but I made it to the bit where you have to gather Arthurs blood etc without feeding and now it's rediculous the basic vampires like you take no damage from any attacks and I die in 2 hits a poison proc is instant death.

Why did my level reset when I reset my skills. I’m level 1 now with 50k skill exp to use up but can’t use them because they are level locked… pointless and makes me not wanna play the game anymore.

2 things that really bothered me. No fast travel so LOTS of back tracking. Respec get more and expensive, so you can't experiment with other builds.

Well and then there's the elephant in the room with how the hints work and being able to "fail" them. Just that one thing alone turned off a lot of people from liking this game. Respecs though. That should have been free. You're already forced to go to a bed and sleep to do a respec. Any form of abusing respecs would be rather limited and this is a single player game after all.

It had such an aweful combat system, but I always forgave that for this games awesome storytelling, the decision making and athmosphere. AND THE MUSIC! ffs we NEED a sequel so badly

You find yourself craving more AA games because they have more love behind them. AAA has become too corporate, all they care about is getting games out fast so they can start charging you for microtransactions asap. Their is no love and care put into AAA anymore its just formulaic rush out the door for instant cash. I hardly play any AAA games anymore, mostly AA, Indie, or older titles that I never played back in the day. I just started playing Gothic this weekend, got the whole series on GOG for cheap.

Bruh was interesting until I heard long dialogues like dam I started hating long dialogues because of Genshin Impact and that was torture since it go on for more that 30 minutes so I might stay away from Vampyr or try it depending on my mood

Stopped playing in 2019, back for halloween 2023. I dont like that you can advance in the story and you cannot come back to talk to npcs of a previous area.
