I remember when I first learned this. It blew my mind!!! I used to do white kayaking and that sometimes involved camping for a weekend. I had a soprano recorder with me and some hand written tunes including Daphne. I was walking through the campground and I heard a flute so I went to the tent it was coming from. (There were at leas fifty tents at the lowest level of the camp ground.) I stood outside and the flute player turned out to be a pretty newlywed whose husband was a kayaker. Amazingly, her name was Daphne. Of course I gave her my carefully hand written version. (I think I had the basic tune and my favorite easy variation) her mind was blown. I never saw her again, which is not unusual at a kayak race we’re there were hundreds of racers. I kayaked for several years and I currently play fiddle and cello. I probably have twenty recorders in both wood and plastic. I’m also eighty-five these days so I take life a bit easy these days.

I was looking for recorders on KZbin can't remember hiw long ago in the 90s I did my Associateship of the Victoria College of Music on the Descant/Soprano and Treble/alto recorders. I now own thanks to you a tenor, Sopranino and the Garklein/piccolo. These recorders are fun!

Excellent video. Don't think I'd mind Van Eyck rising from the grave and bopping me on the head. Once I got over the fright it be great to ask him to play a tune or two never mind have a wee chat. I think there might be a tiny secment of video missing Sarah at the 14min 21 sec part up to the 14min 35sec part.? Great video, very informative and entertaining.

The first part without the modos (which in portuguese mean "modes") is so beautiful! I myself love a sound like this 😊 I play the chromatic harmonica, and well... Because of the lack of dedicated material and "easier" so to say pieces I tend to learn a lot of recorder and flute music - and sometimes violin if it doesn't use the bottom notes the harmonica lacks. There was a time I tried to learn the recorder on a soprano, and that's when I found your channel, been a subscriber ever since! I tend to prefer the sound of the tenor recorder, which in Brazil is not as cheap as the soprano or alto 😢 Anyways, thanks for the great content as always, and for this lovely piece, maaaaybe I'll give it a try on modos 2 and 3 after I learn it 😅

Before watching the video I wanted to ask you a question about articulations in Van Eyck but at the end of the video I got the answer. The question was how to articulate groups of biscrome, whether legato or detached, for example in the piece Daphne 5th variation in the second volume. When I studied it, my teacher forced me to play them staccato with the double tongue stroke, which I felt was too hard and I would have preferred legato or a softer staccato like ddl-ddl, which is impossible for the phonetics of us Italians, so I organised myself to use a staccato like dg-dg which is a little softer than tk-tk but which is still a little hard for me. Thank you very much for this video and more!

Someone called the Derde Daphne "chain variations". It's a very interesting structure that I'm not sure I've seen anywhere else. And, eh, you don't remark much on it here. First: A1 A2 (same B,C) Then: A2 A3 (and B,C), And A3 A4.

Can you mix different bodies, heads and feet of varied woods on the same model instrument with different effect, or are they too hand tuned to do so- Would it make any difference and if so, how?

Daphne Modo 5 confirms what I've always suspected. Renaissance Dutchmen had four hands and five lungs each. That would also explain all the phlegm in the language pronunciations.

Hi. I've been trying the recorder for about a year now, I have a ''dream'' in red and gold, you know the one, but I can't get it to come ''naturally'' if you see what I mean. I teach guitar, also play harmonica, Ukulele and keyboards etc but can't get the recorder to ''become a part of me'' like the other things I play. I know this is a bit vague, but any suggestions please?

I was trying to play along to get the rhythm correct (since I am not very good at reading music), but it seems the music shown (not the original by Van Eyck--I couldn't make that one out) is in a different key than what you are playing? Or is the recorder at a different pitch? Confused.
@faramund9865 Жыл бұрын
I am confused too. Listened to Windmill Hut as I know that melody starts with D. But what she's playing doesn't start with a D. She is playing on an alto but even then I don't think it should sound any different, maybe I'm wrong. From what I can tell she's playing what would be a D on a soprano flute, but that's obviously not a D on alto.
@Team_Recorder Жыл бұрын
You are correct, I’m playing on an alto in G, so the music sounds a fourth lower than what’s written on the page. Sorry!
