Many people, fans and musicians, say the two guitarists that changed ‘the game’ more than any other are Jimi Hendrix & Eddie Van Halen. Since Jimi was before my time, EVH has been my favorite since VH’s first album (1978). Many great Van Halen songs to choose from. “Take Your Whiskey Home” is a fun one. Great entertaining lyrics by David Lee Roth and killer guitar by Eddie. All around banger imo.

This song is a great illustration of why/how Van Halen changed the music scene back in the day. There is a pre & post Van Halen point on the timeline of rock music history. It was like nothing else at the time.

I remember hearing this for the first time in the 8th Grade, I saved up enough money to buy the first album; Van Halen. It sounds just as good in 2022 as it did in 1978/79. This is another one of those albums that doesn’t have a bad track. Would love to see you react to the rest of this one, then on to Van Halen II. It’s all good. 🎸💯

Eddie was a true master of the guitar. Besides genius playing, he could make the guitar do whatever he wanted. What you hear in the beginning is pick scraping on the heavy strings with a phase effect.

The David Lee Roth 1978-84 era is worth doing a track by track of every album review...they are just as important to hard Rock as AC/DC is....so many banging songs from them back then like 'unchained','mean streets','somebody get me a doctor','take your whiskey home' ect.

Oh yes. This entire album was a game changer. I remember exactly where I was when my buddy Keith walked in with it. Just came from Musicland with it. We tore off the cellophane, put it on the turntable, packed the bong, and were just amazed! Right out of the gate with Eruption.. oh Biz that sound is heavy distortion, delay, and a flanger effect. This album deserves an entire album review.

Might try Stay Frosty, which was for their 2012 album with Roth back as singer and Eddie’s son on bass. Or Mean Streets from 1981. And “One Foot Out the Door” also from 1981. Eddie’s best guitar solo. It’s ferocious, he did it in just one take, I think.

The Mighty Van Halen! This seminal album is a masterpiece! Showtime below is right....do the whole album like you did with AC/DC. When you hear one banger after another, it'll give you the full fiery flavor....from these Rock and Roll saviors! "Fair Warning" is also one of my fav. albums....start with Mean Street. The 81' Concert from Oakland is kick a.. to get a live flavor 🔥🔥

That intro sound is made by muting the strings with his left hand on the frets of the neck. Then taking his palm of the side of his right hand and rubbing the strings up & down. Also for additional sound effects he is using a Phase 90. Just one of a hundred sound effects Eddie created on the guitar.

I love the description. Polished but edgy. You could probably define at least the first 2 albums that way. The next few were also edgy, but just a little more polished as they went on. This song is just a power house. That opening riff is so dope, but one of my favorite parts of this song is that damn bass killing it in the background.

I think David Lee Roth (vocals) was taking a shot at the punk rockers of the 70's... Van Halen were L.A. rockers and the punk rockers were always at odds w/ them in an era when fans of The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Generation X, and The Misfits hated bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Boston... (which Van Halen were fans of)... Roth was one of those personalities that liked to pick fights and rivalries against those whom he felt were against him in public ... He once admitted that his lyrics were usually about putting those who mocked him down in the dirt. In 1984, when Van Halen were on the UK Festival Monsters of Rock @ Donington, AC/DC was the headliner. David Lee Roth was backstage telling the press that he and Van Halen were going to "blow the Aussies off the stage"... Of course, that didn't happen 🙄 AC/DC conquered that night... Van Halen never got the same popularity in the UK like they did in the USA.

I sure wish Roth had the lyrics when he came back to Halen after Sammy left. Watching live concert footage was interesting. The band would be playing perfect and hard and then there was Roth going sometimes a quarter of the song just making the occasional noises because he couldn't remember the words. Eddie looked like he was having fun laughing at him but I wondered if he wasn't somewhat disappointed at how things turned out. It looked more like a band practice with out the singer but cool to watch how the band plays on while Roth missed most of his queue's.
